A public playlist does not make a private video public. Check the recording and playlist visibility separately in YouTube Studio; if there is no recording at all, streams longer than 12 hours may not have been archived.
Why a recording in a YouTube playlist is unavailable
YouTube sets visibility separately for each video and playlist. A playlist may be public while one of its live-stream recordings remains private, so playlist viewers cannot watch that item. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes public, unlisted, and private visibility for both videos and playlists (YouTube video privacy settings; YouTube playlist privacy settings).
- Private recording: Only the owner and viewers specifically allowed to access it can watch.
- Private playlist: The playlist itself is restricted, independently of the visibility of the videos inside it.
- Account mismatch: A viewer invited to a private video may be signed in to a different Google account.
- No archived recording: The stream may not have been captured, rather than being inaccessible because of its privacy setting.
Without the playlist link, video ID, owner access, and viewer-account details, it is not possible to establish which cause applies to a particular item.
How public, unlisted, and private visibility differ

These are visibility rules for the video or playlist being checked; changing one does not automatically change the other. YouTube’s guidance explains video visibility, playlist visibility, and access to private videos.

Check and fix the recording in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content.
- Select the Live tab and find the affected recording.
- Check its visibility. If viewers should be able to watch broadly, set it to Public; if access by link is appropriate, set it to Unlisted. Save the change.
- Go to Content > Playlists, find the playlist, and inspect its visibility separately. Change it if needed and save.
- If the recording is meant to remain private, confirm that the viewer is signed in to the exact account invited to access it and send the specific video link.
Use public visibility for broad access, unlisted visibility when link-based access is sufficient, and private visibility when access should be restricted to the owner and selected viewers. Do not make content public merely to fix a viewer’s access if its privacy is intentional.
Could YouTube have changed an older unlisted upload to private?
Possibly, if the recording is an older unlisted upload. YouTube says that beginning July 23, 2021, it made unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 private unless their owners opted out. The update also applied to some older unlisted playlists; it does not mean that every private livestream recording was affected. Check the item’s upload date and current status before drawing that conclusion.

YouTube describes options that can include keeping the item private, restoring legacy unlisted status where available, making it public, or re-uploading it. A re-upload gets a new URL and does not inherit the original upload’s associated data, such as views or comments. See YouTube’s guidance on older unlisted videos.
What if the livestream recording is missing altogether?
An absent archive is different from an existing archive that viewers cannot access. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup; that can help preserve future streams, but it cannot restore an archive that was never captured. Check the channel’s Live content in Studio and, for future broadcasts, consider keeping a local recording. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
