To loop a recorded trade show booth demo on YouTube Live, play the video through a streaming encoder such as OBS Studio, connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with the event’s stream URL and key, and start the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In OBS, enable Loop for one video or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for several clips. An uploaded YouTube video alone does not create a live broadcast.

What you need before starting

  • A video file, or several files, that you have permission to stream.
  • OBS Studio on a computer that can play the file and maintain an internet connection for the duration of the broadcast.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before the event. YouTube live-streaming tips

You do not need a dedicated hardware encoder for this local-file workflow if a software encoder such as OBS meets your needs. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. YouTube’s encoder guide

Choose how the demo will repeat

What you want to play OBS source Repeat setting Requirement
One video file Media Source Enable Loop Video file accessible to the computer running OBS
A sequence of video files VLC Video Enable Loop Playlist VLC installed; for 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC

OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video controls for Windows, macOS and Linux. OBS Media Sources

Set up and start the YouTube Live stream

  1. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling gives you an event page you can promote. Use the stream settings in Live Control Room to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current Studio workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Build the OBS scene. Add a scene, then add a Media Source for one clip and select the file. Enable Loop. For multiple clips, add a VLC Video source, build its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if the VLC Video source is unavailable.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS stream settings, enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP; use the RTMPS URL shown in your stream settings. YouTube RTMPS guide
  4. Check the output settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the resolution, frame rate and codec, and ensure your upload connection can sustain it. Consult YouTube’s bitrate recommendations and test the actual stream rather than assuming one setting suits every file and connection. YouTube encoder settings
  5. Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming in OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview, then check that the picture is moving and the audio is audible before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before a planned event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. YouTube live-streaming tips
  6. Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on YouTube stream health and check picture and sound while the broadcast runs. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the event and monitoring quality during the stream. YouTube streaming tips

Make the loop suitable for a booth audience

Prepare the transition

A loop repeats exactly what is in the file or playlist. If a sudden cut from the final frame back to the opening frame would be distracting, edit the end and beginning to make the return feel intentional. For a playlist, check the transition between each adjacent clip as well as the final clip returning to the first.

Clear every element in the recording

Confirm that you have permission to use the footage, logos, music, narration and any people shown in a public live broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream settings documentation flags audio and video rights for stream trailers, but it is not a complete rights determination for booth-demo recordings. Manage live stream settings

Plan for unattended time

Test for the full duration you expect the loop to run. Confirm that the video continues after its first repeat, that audio does not unexpectedly end, and that someone can respond if OBS playback, the computer or the network fails. YouTube recommends ongoing checks of stream health and audio/video quality; a loop setting does not itself recover a failed encoder or connection. YouTube live-streaming tips

Archive, DVR and latency choices

YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours, according to its encoder guide. Longer broadcasts should not be assumed to receive that automatic archive. DVR may allow viewers to pause and rewind during a live stream, while latency options trade delay against playback buffering. Choose these options in the event’s live settings based on whether immediate interaction or smoother playback matters more. YouTube’s encoder guide Manage live stream settings

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. If you only need one clip, use Media Source instead.
  • The clip plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-clip VLC source, enable Loop Playlist and verify that the playlist contains the intended files.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is streaming, that its stream URL and key match the event in Live Control Room, and that the connection is stable. Allow time for the preview to appear before selecting Go live.
  • The stream has video but no sound, or the picture is not moving: Check the OBS source and audio levels, then verify both picture and sound in the YouTube preview. Test with movement and audio like those in the real demo.
  • The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, and with the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot maintain the selected settings, then test again. YouTube encoder settings
  • You cannot create a live event: Check channel verification and live-streaming restrictions, and remember that first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube live-streaming tips
