Fix an OBS Media Source Restarting Before a Cartoon Episode Ends

An OBS Media Source can restart when it becomes visible again. Check its activation setting, Loop, scene changes and visibility automation.

If a cartoon episode restarts before it finishes in OBS, first check whether its Media Source is being hidden and shown again or reactivated by a scene change or automation. In the source’s properties, Restart playback when source becomes active controls whether it starts over when it becomes visible. Loop repeats the file after it finishes; it does not explain an early restart.

Check the Media Source settings

  1. In OBS, select the cartoon’s Media Source in the Sources list and open its properties.
  2. Confirm that the file field points to the intended episode file.
  3. Check Loop. Leave it off if the episode should play only once. OBS says Loop repeats playback after the file completes and is off by default. OBS Media Sources guide
  4. Choose the activation behavior. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if showing the source should start the episode from the beginning. OBS defines this as restarting when the source is in the current scene and visible. If you want playback to continue rather than start over after a hide/show, try leaving it unchecked; community guidance supports this behavior, so verify it in your installed OBS version. OBS Media Sources guide OBS community discussion
  5. Use Close file when inactive only if you want OBS to unload the file while it is hidden or off the current scene. OBS notes that the source may take a short time to reappear while it reloads; the setting is not documented as a general fix for mid-episode restarts. OBS Media Sources guide
  6. If the source should disappear only after the episode completes, leave Loop off and consider Show nothing when playback ends. That setting hides the source at completion; it is not documented as protection against interruptions before completion. OBS Media Sources guide

Find what is activating the source

OBS ties the restart option to a source becoming active—being in the current scene and visible. Watch the Sources list and preview during playback, especially when switching scenes. A hide/show action, a scene transition, or automation that changes visibility can activate the source again and trigger the configured restart behavior. A reported brief flash of the last frame before playback restarted after hiding and showing is a user observation, not an official guarantee or proof of a repeated mid-episode fault. Follow a troubleshooting sequence

  1. Confirm the Media Source points to the correct local episode file.
  2. Set Loop according to the intended behavior: off for one play, on only if the episode should repeat after completion.
  3. Decide whether activation should restart or continue playback, then set Restart playback when source becomes active accordingly.
  4. Observe whether the source is hidden, shown, or moved on and off the current scene when the restart occurs. Check scene transitions and automation as well as manual actions.
  5. If Close file when inactive is enabled, allow for a reload delay after the source is shown again.
  6. If it happens only when toggling immediately at the episode’s end, test with a short pause before toggling. An issue report for OBS 30.2.0 described a rapid visibility toggle near playback completion failing to restart; the reporter said waiting about one second worked. This is a version-specific observation, not a universal timing rule or explanation for mid-episode restarts. OBS issue report
  7. If the problem persists, note the OBS version, operating system, whether the media is local or on a network, the Media Source properties, any visibility automation, and the exact moment the restart happens. The available documentation and reports do not establish the cause for every setup.

Choose the playback behavior that fits

Choice Start position and behavior When it fits
Restart on activation Starts from the beginning when the source is in the current scene and visible. Use when every activation should replay the episode from the start. OBS Media Sources guide
Leave restart unchecked Community guidance says playback can continue while inactive; verify on your installed OBS version. Try when you want to return to a scene without restarting its video. OBS community discussion
Use a VLC Video source Offers playlist support and visibility behavior options; requires VLC to be installed. Consider it for a playlist workflow, not as a proven fix for an unexplained restart. OBS Media Sources guide

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from fixing an OBS source: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube only.
