How to Prevent a 24/7 Kids’ YouTube Stream from Showing a Blank Screen Between Videos

Use OBS Media Source Loop for one repeating video, or VLC Video’s Loop Playlist for several clips. Check the scene and confirm the transition in YouTube playback.

To keep an OBS-based YouTube stream from going blank between videos, enable Loop on a single Media Source, or enable Loop Playlist on a VLC Video source if you are cycling through multiple clips. Then verify the complete playback cycle in YouTube’s preview and live output. Looping handles the end of a file; it does not prevent unrelated scene, network, encoder, or decoding problems.

Choose the OBS source that matches your stream

What you want to play OBS source Setting Requirement
One video repeatedly Media Source Loop The video file must be available to OBS.
Several videos in sequence VLC Video Loop Playlist VLC must be installed for the source to be available.

OBS documents both behaviors in its Media Sources guide. Use a Media Source for a single repeating file; choose VLC Video when the stream should move through a playlist and restart it when it reaches the end.

Set one video to repeat

  1. In OBS, select the scene used for the live stream.
  2. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source or select the existing one, then open its properties.
  3. Select the video file and enable Loop. OBS documents this option as off by default.
  4. Check Show nothing when playback ends if the source vanishes after a non-looping file finishes. For a repeating video, confirm that Loop is enabled; the end-of-playback display behavior is not a replacement for looping.
  5. Apply the changes and confirm the source is visible in the active scene.

Loop a playlist of videos

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries.
  2. In the active OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and open its properties.
  3. Add the video files to the playlist in the intended order.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist, then check that the source is visible and framed correctly in the scene.
  5. Use the source’s shuffle control only if you want the playback order to vary; otherwise leave the playlist in its chosen order.

Check the scene and verify the stream end to end

A correctly looped source can still appear blank if it is hidden, absent from the live scene, covered by another source, or framed outside the canvas. Check the source’s visibility and placement, then verify what viewers actually receive rather than relying only on the OBS preview.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the preview before going live.
  2. Test with representative video movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
  3. Check playback from the watch page and on a mobile device, as YouTube’s live streaming tips advise.
  4. Let the video or playlist reach its end and confirm that the next playback begins without a blank interval. For a playlist, observe the transition from the final item back to the first.
  5. Monitor the outgoing stream while it is live; source looping does not guarantee that the encoder, network, or media decoder will remain healthy.

Connect OBS to YouTube

When streaming through an encoder, YouTube’s setup process requires its live server URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and keep the stream key private. YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop controls, as well as DVR settings for viewers, in its live stream settings. Those options do not make a non-looping video repeat: configure the OBS source separately.

Set the audience correctly for a children’s stream

Choose the audience setting that accurately describes the content. YouTube says that designating a live stream as Made for Kids disables features including live chat, live chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, Super Chat, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may be shown. Do not plan on chat interaction or reminder notifications when those features do not apply. See YouTube’s guidance on avoiding restrictions on live streams.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or playback gap

What you see Likely check What to do
The source disappears when a clip ends Loop may be off, or the source may be set to show nothing at playback end. For a single file, enable Loop in Media Source properties. Review Show nothing when playback ends.
The playlist stops after its last item Loop Playlist may be disabled. Enable Loop Playlist in VLC Video properties and test the full playlist cycle.
The OBS canvas is blank, but the stream was expected to show video The source may be hidden, missing from the active scene, covered, or outside the intended frame. Check visibility, scene selection, source order, and framing in OBS.
The source appears correct in OBS but not in YouTube playback The issue may be in the outgoing encoder stream or connection rather than the file’s loop setting. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and monitor the outgoing audio and video quality; test the watch page and a mobile device.
A playlist source is unavailable VLC may not be installed. Install VLC, restart or reopen OBS if needed, and check whether VLC Video is available.

OBS documents the source-level loop controls, not a guarantee against failures in other parts of a live setup. If these checks do not isolate the fault, test the source and outgoing stream separately so you can distinguish a playback setting from a scene, encoder, network, or decoding issue.
