If a camera, microphone, or capture card is missing from your laptop’s capture app, first check whether Windows detects it. If it works elsewhere, focus on the app’s permissions and selected source; if it is missing across apps, check its connection, hardware switch, Windows access settings, device status, and drivers.
Find out where the problem is
“Capture source” can mean a camera, microphone, capture card, or another input. The quickest way to narrow down the cause is to test the device outside the app where it fails, using Windows’ camera or audio settings where available.
- Test the source in Windows. Check whether the camera or microphone appears and works in the relevant Windows settings or another application.
- Compare the result with your capture app. If Windows and another app can use the device but your target app cannot, check that app’s permission and source selection. If the device is missing everywhere, start with its connection, physical controls, Windows access, device enablement, and driver.
- Test one source at a time. A camera and its built-in microphone can be affected by different settings. Diagnose the video and audio paths separately.
Menu names and available settings vary by Windows version, device, and application. The steps below cover Windows, Zoom, and OBS; for a different operating system or app, use its current device and privacy settings rather than assuming the same menus apply.
If Windows does not detect the camera
Check the connection and physical controls
- For an external webcam or capture card, check that it is connected properly. If practical, reconnect it and try another available connection.
- Look for a camera privacy switch, keyboard button, or other laptop control that disables the built-in camera. A switched-off camera may not be available to apps even though it is physically present.
Check Windows access and device status
- Check Windows camera access and whether the relevant apps are allowed to use the camera. App permission is not the same as choosing which camera the app uses.
- In Device Manager, inspect the camera entry. If it is disabled, enable it.
- If the camera remains unavailable after checking the connection, switch, permissions, and device status, Microsoft’s Windows camera guidance includes uninstalling and reinstalling the device driver, then scanning for hardware changes. Use the steps for your Windows version and device.
Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so that operating system no longer receives standard support updates from Microsoft.

If Windows does not detect the microphone
- Check that Windows microphone access is enabled and that apps—or desktop apps, where applicable—are allowed to use the microphone.
- If the microphone belongs to a webcam, camera access may also be needed for the webcam’s microphone.
- Choose the intended microphone in the app as well as checking Windows access. A permitted microphone can still be missing from a recording if the app has selected a different input.
- If Windows still does not detect the microphone after the initial checks, Microsoft includes reinstalling audio drivers among its later troubleshooting steps.
Fix a camera or microphone that is missing only in Zoom
Check permission and device selection
- Make sure Zoom has permission to use the camera or microphone. If you use Zoom in a browser, check the browser’s permission for the site; if you use the desktop app, check the operating system’s access for apps or desktop apps as appropriate.
- In Zoom’s device controls, select the camera and microphone you actually want to use. For a laptop, that may be its integrated camera and audio devices; an external device may be listed separately.
- Confirm that the device is connected and enabled in Windows. Permission to use a device does not ensure that Zoom has selected it.
Close conflicts and update
Zoom lists other programs or websites using the camera, incorrect device selection, disabled settings, missing access, connection problems, and outdated Zoom or Windows software among possible causes of camera detection problems.
- Close other apps and browser pages that may be using the camera or microphone.
- Check the connection and confirm the intended device is selected in Zoom.
- Restart the computer if the device remains unavailable.
- Check for relevant Zoom, Windows, and device-driver updates.
For Zoom audio, if the microphone does not appear in the app, check Windows microphone permissions as well as Zoom’s selected input. Zoom also describes a Windows audio-driver signal-processing setting as an advanced troubleshooting option; treat it as a later step rather than a first fix.

Select a camera, capture card, or audio device in OBS
Add a video source
- In OBS, choose the scene where you want the device to appear.
- Add a Video Capture Device source. OBS documents this source type for devices including webcams and capture cards.
- Open the source’s properties and choose the intended device from the Device dropdown.
- If the device is not listed, check whether Windows detects it, whether it is enabled, and whether another app is using it. On Windows, OBS says the device driver must support DirectShow output.
Add an audio source
In OBS, add an audio input or output device source, then select the device you want to capture. Audio sources can be scoped to a scene, so check the scene in which you expect the audio to be available.
Choose the right fix before buying equipment
The useful distinction is not simply built-in versus external. Check what the laptop detects, what the app supports and is allowed to access, how the device connects, and whether you need video, audio, or both.

Do not buy a replacement just because one app cannot see a device. A new webcam will not fix a permission, source-selection, or driver problem. Consider an external USB webcam only if the built-in camera remains unusable after troubleshooting, and check compatibility with your laptop and capture app.
