Yes—if the laptop stays awake, powered and connected after you close the lid. On Windows, check Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does and, if available, set the plugged-in action to Do nothing. Then test a short private stream: a sleeping laptop cannot keep its stream running. Whether your specific laptop can safely operate closed depends on its model and cooling design.
What closing the lid does to a livestream
Many laptops are configured to sleep when the lid closes. If yours sleeps, streaming software stops working or loses its connection to YouTube. Microsoft notes that most laptops can go to sleep automatically when the lid is closed (Microsoft Support: Battery saving tips for Windows).
Keeping the display dark is not the same as putting the computer to sleep. The stream can continue only if the laptop remains awake and its streaming software and network connection keep running. The exact behavior and available lid settings vary by operating system, hardware and manufacturer; check the guidance for your model, especially its airflow and thermal requirements, before operating it closed for a long period.
Set up and test a Windows laptop
- Identify the laptop and operating system. Confirm the manufacturer’s guidance on running that model with its lid shut, including cooling and ventilation.
- Connect the laptop to AC power. In Windows, open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does. Review the plugged-in setting and select Do nothing if that option is available. Windows may not offer the same choices on every machine.
- Start a short private test stream. Use the intended streaming setup, close the lid, and check from another device that the broadcast remains live and connected. Do not assume a change in screen brightness or display state proves the laptop is still awake.
- Only rely on the setup after the test succeeds. If the stream stops, check the lid-close action, power connection, network and the laptop maker’s instructions before trying a longer broadcast.
Choose YouTube’s computer streaming method
YouTube supports streaming from a computer by webcam or encoder. Both methods still rely on the laptop staying awake and connected. Use the webcam route for a direct computer-camera workflow; choose an encoder workflow if your production needs streaming software. Confirm your channel is eligible before scheduling: YouTube says it must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Set the audience correctly for a children’s story
A story intended for children should be designated accurately as made for kids in YouTube’s audience settings in Live Control Room. YouTube says the designation disables live chat and features including comments and personalized ads on the stream. Review YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience – Computer for the setting and its effects.
The content being a children’s story is separate from whether a child appears or participates. YouTube’s guidance says creators must be at least 16 to livestream; if someone under 16 participates on an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present. Check YouTube Help: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming before planning a broadcast involving a minor.
