If a Streamlabs alert sound will not play, first separate a file-format problem from an alert setting or audio-routing problem. Streamlabs recommends converting a troublesome MP3 to OGG, while its current Alert Box guide lists MP3, OGG, and WAV as supported formats. Re-upload or change the file, save the alert settings, then trigger a test alert. If the test is still silent, check mute, monitoring, audio-track selection, and OBS routing.
First, identify which sound is missing
This fix applies to an uploaded sound used by Streamlabs Alert Box—for example, a notification sound. If game or desktop audio is missing, that is a capture or routing issue, not an alert-file format issue; see the desktop-audio section below.
Fix an Alert Box sound file
1. Check the file type
Streamlabs’ current Alert Box guide lists .mp3, .ogg, and .wav as supported audio formats. A supported extension does not guarantee that a particular file is valid or will play in every environment.
If an MP3 fails, Streamlabs’ sound-file troubleshooting article recommends converting it to OGG. That article was last updated December 17, 2021, so treat OGG as a suggested workaround rather than a universal requirement. Streamlabs says a newly uploaded file should be converted to OGG after upload completes. Wait for the upload or conversion to finish before testing.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The reviewed guidance does not specify codec, sample rate, bitrate, duration, or maximum file size for Alert Box audio. Do not assume a file violates a particular technical limit without evidence.
2. Save the alert and run a test
- In Streamlabs, open the Alert Box settings and select the alert whose sound is missing.
- Choose a supported sound file or re-upload the file after conversion.
- Save the alert settings and wait for any upload or conversion to finish.
- Use the Alert Box test controls, or Streamlabs Desktop’s test widgets, to trigger that alert. Test before going live so you can hear whether the configured alert path works.
3. Check mute and audio routing
If the test alert occurs but you cannot hear it, inspect the sound controls and routing rather than converting the file repeatedly:

- Check whether the sound is muted in the recent-events controls.
- In Advanced Audio Settings, check the alert’s selected audio track and whether that track is included where you need it.
- Check the “Route Audio to OBS” option if your setup uses OBS and the alert needs to be sent there.
- Check the monitoring device. If it differs from your desktop audio device, Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance says to select monitor and output.
Exact menu wording can vary by software version. If you cannot find a label, look for the corresponding alert audio, monitoring, track, or OBS-routing control.
If desktop or game audio is missing
Uploaded Alert Box sounds and captured system audio are separate paths. Streamlabs says Windows Desktop can capture microphone and system audio directly. On macOS, its guidance says direct desktop-audio capture is not natively available and requires a virtual audio driver. That requirement concerns desktop/system capture; it does not mean an uploaded Alert Box file needs a virtual driver.

If only desktop or game sound is absent, check that Streamlabs is capturing the intended audio device and that the source is not muted. On macOS, follow Streamlabs’ desktop-audio capture guidance for the virtual-driver setup.
Fix repeated or echoing alert sounds
If a sound plays more than once or echoes, look for duplicate alert sources or browser-source instances rather than changing the file format. Streamlabs suggests closing extra pop-out windows and checking browser-source behavior; if needed, remove and recreate the source. Some older instructions use OBS or XSplit menu labels that may have changed, so follow the underlying idea—eliminate duplicate sources—and use the labels available in your version.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| What happens | Likely path to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One alert’s sound is silent, but other audio works | That file or that alert’s settings | Try OGG if the file is an MP3, confirm the extension is supported, wait for upload or conversion, save, and test the alert. |
| The alert test fires, but you hear nothing | Mute, monitoring, selected track, or OBS routing | Check the recent-events mute control, Advanced Audio Settings, the alert’s track, monitoring device, and “Route Audio to OBS” where relevant. |
| Desktop or game sound is missing too | Audio capture or operating-system setup | Check the captured device and mute state. For macOS desktop audio, Streamlabs’ guidance calls for a virtual audio driver. |
| The alert repeats or echoes | Duplicate pop-out windows or browser sources | Close extra pop-outs, inspect browser-source behavior, and remove and recreate a duplicate source if necessary. |
If the sound still does not work
If converting or re-uploading the file, testing the alert, and checking mute and routing do not resolve the problem, the available Streamlabs guidance does not establish one definitive cause. Contact Streamlabs Support with the alert type, file extension, operating system, Streamlabs version, and what happened during the test. Do not include a private stream key in a support post.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a separate use case—keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock—StreamNeo is a cloud service, not a fix for Streamlabs alert audio. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it accepts your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card.
