Use a hardware-sensor monitoring utility for your mini PC’s operating system, then check the CPU reading during normal streaming—not just at idle. On Windows, CPUID HWMonitor is a straightforward starting point; on Linux, use a sensor utility that reads the temperatures exposed by the kernel and device. The exact CPU, mini PC and operating system determine which sensor is available and what temperature limit applies.
Choose a monitor for your operating system
Temperature-monitoring software reads sensors made available by the processor, system board, firmware and operating system. A missing or implausible value can indicate a sensor or driver support issue; it does not by itself prove the mini PC is overheating. Check that the label refers to the CPU package or core, not a generic board or storage temperature.
Windows options
- CPUID HWMonitor: CPUID describes HWMonitor as a Windows x86/x64 and ARM64 utility that reads system-health sensors, including CPU and GPU temperatures, fan speeds, utilization and clock speeds. Its basic monitoring does not require its advertised PRO version. See CPUID’s HWMonitor page.
- NZXT CAM: NZXT says CAM monitors Windows PCs and displays CPU, GPU, memory and storage readings, with temperature graphs and a compact mini mode. Its FAQ lists Windows 10 and 11 support, but not macOS or Linux. Monitoring does not require NZXT hardware; advanced NZXT fan control does require compatible NZXT hardware. See NZXT CAM.
- Open Hardware Monitor: This free, open-source project describes support for Intel and AMD processors and other hardware. Its repository notes that antivirus vendors have sometimes flagged it. Download only from the project’s official repository, and do not disable security protection or add broad antivirus exclusions to use it. See the project repository.
Linux options
Linux temperature readings depend on what the mini PC’s hardware and kernel drivers expose. The sensor names coretemp for Intel and k10temp for AMD are useful starting points when checking CPU temperature support through the hwmon subsystem, but they do not guarantee every device will expose the same sensor or label. NIX-Z documentation describes these sensor approaches.
Identify the CPU model and Linux distribution first, then check whether the system exposes temperature sensors and use a graphical utility or command-line sensor reader to view them. If no CPU temperature appears, investigate support for the particular model and consult the mini PC manufacturer’s documentation before treating the absence as evidence of overheating.

Check temperatures during a representative stream
- Identify the hardware and software. Record the mini PC model, CPU model and operating system. These details are needed to find the relevant sensor and the manufacturer’s thermal guidance.
- Open a monitoring utility. Select the CPU package or core reading if the utility distinguishes it from system-board, drive or GPU temperatures.
- Compare idle and streaming readings. Check whether the value changes plausibly when the cartoon stream is running normally. A single snapshot cannot show whether temperature stays elevated over time.
- Use a graph or history view when available. NZXT CAM advertises temperature graphs; Nexus also advertises graph/history features. Review a representative period of ordinary operation rather than relying only on an instantaneous reading. See Nexus/HWiNFO’s product page.
- Note symptoms alongside the readings. Record sustained high readings with fan noise, thermal throttling, dropped frames or unexpected shutdowns. Temperature alone does not prove the stream has a problem or establish its cause.
- Check the limits for this exact machine. Compare the CPU reading with documentation for that processor and the mini PC manufacturer’s guidance. There is no universal safe temperature to apply to every mini PC and processor.
What a temperature reading can—and cannot—tell you
A monitoring utility can show the values its sensors report, but available sensors and labels vary with the CPU, drivers and firmware. If a reading is missing or looks implausible, check the CPU model, software support and mini PC documentation before drawing conclusions. The available utility documentation does not establish a safe target, maximum temperature for your specific model, or a thermal test result for continuous cartoon streaming.
Monitoring is diagnostic, not a cooling fix. The information available here does not establish that your particular mini PC needs a stand, external fan or repair. Decide whether cooling changes are warranted only after checking the readings and model-specific guidance.
