It can play a playlist on repeat and optionally shuffle it. Install VLC first, using the same 64-bit architecture as 64-bit OBS. For a single video on repeat, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler. Consider the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin only if you need to edit a playlist while playback continues or preserve the current item after an OBS restart—and check its current compatibility with your OBS version and operating system.
These tools automate playback, not rights clearance or YouTube monetization. Before building a channel around cartoons, confirm that you have the necessary streaming rights and understand YouTube’s copyright, monetization, and archive limits.
Which OBS playlist option fits your cartoon stream?
| Option | Best for | What it does | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local video file | Loops a single file and offers controls such as restart on activation, hardware decoding where supported, and hiding the source at the end. | It is not a multi-item playlist source. OBS notes that reopening an inactive source can cause a short delay. OBS Media Sources documentation |
| OBS VLC Video | A playlist of local cartoon files | Supports playlists, loop playlist, shuffle playlist, visibility behavior, and network caching. OBS describes it as allowing a playlist of items, similar to an image slideshow. | VLC must be installed for the source to appear. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Available on Windows, macOS, and Linux according to OBS documentation. OBS Media Sources documentation |
| Media Playlist Source plugin | Playlist changes during playback or retaining the current item after an OBS restart | The project materials describe playlist editing without restarting the video, item selection, and shuffle. | It is a third-party dependency. The OBS forum resource lists minimum OBS 30.0.0, while an April 13, 2025 update says the upstream change it uses has been merged since OBS 31. Because the version notes are not fully consistent, check the current release instructions for your exact OBS build and OS. OBS Forum resource · Plugin project |
For a basic continuous playlist, VLC Video is the practical first choice because it already provides the core playlist-and-loop workflow in OBS. The plugin is worth evaluating when its specific live-editing or restart behavior matters. The available feature documentation does not establish that any option will remain stable in every 24/7 setup, so test your own system before relying on it.

Confirm that you have permission for the intended livestream use, territories, music, and any archive you plan to keep. A license may also require the rights holder to allowlist your channel in YouTube Content ID. Permission does not guarantee that a stream will avoid automated interruptions or qualify for monetization.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For one video file: use Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the video should play. In the Sources panel, click + and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one, then enable Local File and browse to the video.
- Enable Loop to repeat that file. Configure other options such as restart on activation only if they suit the scene behavior you want.
- Start playback in the scene and check that the image and audio behave as intended when the file reaches its end and starts again.
For several files: use VLC Video
- Install VLC before opening or reopening OBS. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC so the source dependency matches.
- In OBS, select the destination scene, click + in Sources, and choose VLC Video. If VLC Video is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- In the source properties, add the local files to the playlist. Arrange them in the intended playback order.
- Enable Loop Playlist for continuous repetition. Enable Shuffle only if random order is appropriate for the channel.
- Check visibility behavior, audio routing, and the transition between files. Let the full playlist reach at least one transition on the target setup before depending on it for a long broadcast.
When to try Media Playlist Source
Use the plugin only if you need a workflow the built-in source does not provide, such as changing playlist contents while the current item continues or retaining the playing file across an OBS restart. Read the current installation instructions for your operating system and OBS build before installing; do not assume that the forum’s minimum-version note alone establishes compatibility with your setup.
Copyright, live-stream interruptions, and monetization
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. When it identifies content, it may show a placeholder, warn you to stop, or interrupt or terminate the stream if the issue remains. A licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that they have the rights needed to use the live content on Google services, including applicable music rights. This is a platform requirement, not a determination of what copyright exceptions apply in a particular country. Check the rules and permissions relevant to the territories where you stream. YouTube Terms of Service
Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams and says reused-content review can apply even when a creator has permission. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible; examples include similar or repetitive videos with minimal variation. A playlist plugin cannot resolve that policy question. YouTube channel monetization policies

Plan for long streams and archives
YouTube says a livestream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a complete archive matters, record a local backup rather than relying on YouTube’s automatic archive. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC and reopen OBS. With 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. OBS lists VLC as a requirement for this source type. OBS Media Sources documentation
- A file does not play or the playlist stops unexpectedly: Check that the file path still points to an available local file, then test the playlist and its loop setting in the target scene. The cited documentation does not establish a universal fix for every file or system.
- Video plays but audio is missing or routed incorrectly: Check the source’s audio behavior and OBS mixer routing, then listen through a complete file transition before going live.
- The plugin will not install or load: Check its current release instructions against your operating system and exact OBS build. The published version notes have changed over time and do not support a blanket compatibility guarantee. OBS Forum resource
- YouTube interrupts the stream despite a license: Ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID and confirm the permission covers the content and planned use. YouTube copyright guidance
- The livestream has no complete YouTube archive: If it ran longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not capture the stream; keep a local recording if you need the archive. YouTube archive guidance
