To run a playlist of preschool stories as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, put compatible video files in an FFmpeg concat list, loop that list, and send the encoded output to YouTube over RTMPS using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The concat list controls playback order; FFmpeg encodes and delivers the stream. A looping command does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted service, and a 24/7 broadcast is not a reliable full-length archive.
What you need before you start
- A computer or server that can stay on, run FFmpeg, and maintain a stable internet connection for as long as you want to broadcast.
- Story videos and audio you have the rights to stream on YouTube. A story being available online does not establish that you may rebroadcast it.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the demuxer, encoder, and protocols used by your command. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg release; the project’s full documentation is updated over time.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, plus a broadcast created in Live Control Room.
- Enough sustained upload bandwidth for your selected video and audio bitrate, with headroom for normal network variation.
The example below is for a 720p, 30 fps H.264 stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps with H.264; that is an ingestion recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will deliver reliably. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health. See its live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Prepare and check the story videos
Inspect the files
Make a folder for the program and place the videos in the order you want them to play. Before building the list, check each file’s video and audio streams, codecs, time base, dimensions, frame rate, and duration. FFmpeg’s ffprobe can report this information; for example, run ffprobe -hide_banner -i "story-01.mp4" and review the stream details printed to the terminal.
The concat demuxer is the lightest route when the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. It reads packets from each file and places them sequentially on a shared timeline. Inaccurate file durations or streams whose actual lengths do not match can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps. FFmpeg documents these requirements in its concat demuxer documentation.

Choose how to handle mismatched files
- Use the concat demuxer when the clips are compatible and you want to avoid an intermediate re-encode. Differences such as a clip with no audio, different codecs, or incompatible stream parameters can prevent clean concatenation.
- Normalize first if the demuxer inputs do not match. Convert each clip to the same stream layout, codec, frame rate, dimensions, and time base, then use the list. Account for clips without audio by adding a silent audio track if the final list requires audio on every file.
- Use the concat filter when inputs need to be joined while being re-encoded into a consistent output. It offers more control over normalization but requires encoding work. FFmpeg’s video concatenation FAQ recommends the filter for workflows that need re-encoding.
The concat protocol is a different mechanism from the concat demuxer and is not a general substitute for a playlist. It joins file data and applies only to certain container formats.

Create the FFmpeg playlist file
Save a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat in the folder with the videos. Put one file entry per clip, in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'story-01.mp4'
file 'story-02.mp4'
file 'story-03.mp4'
Use paths that the FFmpeg process can access. Relative paths are easiest when the playlist and files are in the same folder. The example command keeps FFmpeg’s safe-path checking enabled, so avoid absolute paths or paths outside the expected working directory unless you understand the implications. Do not disable safety checks for a playlist whose entries come from untrusted sources.
Test the list once before looping it. From the folder containing the list, run:

ffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy test-playlist.mkv
This creates a finite test output without re-encoding. It is suitable only when the files are compatible for demuxer concatenation. Play the result and check that every story appears in the intended order, audio is present, transitions have no unintended gaps, and the end of one clip does not produce a timestamp or decoding problem. If the test fails, fix or normalize the inputs rather than treating a live stream as the test environment.
Connect the playlist to YouTube Live
Create a broadcast and get the ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the broadcast and complete its required details and audience setting.
- In the encoder or stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS server URL where available. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP recommended in YouTube’s encoder guidance. Follow YouTube’s current Live Control Room instructions for your account and broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow in creating a live stream with an encoder. Stream keys should not be pasted into a public script, shared document, or screenshot. For the command below, set an environment variable named YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL to the complete RTMPS output address formed from the server URL and stream key, and keep it out of logs and shared shell history. The exact way to set a private environment variable depends on your operating system and shell.
Start a 720p30 H.264 stream
This example assumes the concat-list inputs are compatible with the concat demuxer, contain video and audio, and that your installed FFmpeg build supports libx264 and AAC encoding. It re-encodes the playlist to a consistent 1280×720, 30 fps output, uses H.264 with a two-second GOP, and encodes stereo AAC audio. Treat it as a starting point to adapt and test, not a universal or tested recipe.

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL"
-re reads the input at its natural playback rate rather than sending the entire file as fast as the computer can process it. -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely; its availability and behavior depend on the installed build and input arrangement, so test the loop with your actual files. The video filter scales the picture to fit within 720p and pads unused space rather than cropping it. The video bitrate is set to 4 Mbps, with matching minimum and maximum rates and an 8 Mbps buffer; the 60-frame GOP at 30 fps targets a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.

YouTube lists H.264 recommendations of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; the listed minimums are respectively 5 Mbps, 6 Mbps, and 3 Mbps. These are platform recommendations for those settings, not a substitute for testing. Its guidance also specifies CBR, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and for SDR Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. A simple story stream generally does not need 60 fps unless the source and intended presentation call for it.
Start, test, and monitor the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and watch its console output for input, encoding, or network errors.
- In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to receive the feed and review its stream health indicators and warnings.
- Check the stream from a viewer’s perspective, including picture, audio level, aspect ratio, and transitions. YouTube specifically recommends testing with sound and movement similar to what you will use in the actual stream.
- Do not consider a successful short test proof of 24/7 operation. Test the end-to-start loop, then decide how you will monitor the host and recover if FFmpeg, the computer, or the network stops.
Set the audience and confirm you have streaming rights
YouTube requires creators to designate whether a video or live stream is Made for Kids. Preschool-directed story content may be intended for children, but the creator is responsible for applying the setting accurately; do not rely on automatic classification to decide. Set the audience for the live stream in Live Control Room and consult YouTube’s audience-setting guidance for the platform’s criteria and controls.

Made for Kids live streams have feature restrictions. YouTube lists live chat and related features as unavailable, disables personalized ads (although contextual ads may still appear), and restricts comments, reminders, and other features. Do not plan on live chat, Super Chat, personalized advertising, or notification-driven growth as part of this stream. See YouTube’s live-stream restrictions.
Only include stories, music, narration, and visuals you are authorized to stream. A playlist is simply a delivery method; it does not grant rights or prevent a rights holder’s claim or YouTube enforcement.

Keep the stream running—and plan separately for recording
FFmpeg can repeat the playlist while the process is running, but a 24/7 plan also needs a host that stays powered, a stable connection, monitoring, and a way to restart or recover after a failure. No single command guarantees uninterrupted uptime. The appropriate restart and monitoring setup depends on the operating system, host, and network; test the recovery path rather than assuming the process will always remain connected.

Going live and preserving the full program are separate tasks. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours; streams over 12 hours may not be captured. For a nominally continuous broadcast, plan an independent local recording or other archive rotation if you need to retain the complete output. YouTube recommends a local archive backup in its live-stream archiving guidance. Estimate storage from the actual encoded bitrate and desired retention period rather than assuming a 24/7 YouTube archive will be available.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports that a file cannot be opened | The path is wrong, the process starts in another working directory, or safe-path checks reject the entry. | Confirm the file exists at the path written in playlist.ffconcat, run FFmpeg from the expected folder, and keep entries within that folder where practical. Only change safety settings when you understand and trust every path in the list. |
| The list fails to concatenate or the output has glitches at clip boundaries | Inputs have mismatched streams or codecs, timestamps, inaccurate durations, or different actual stream lengths. | Inspect the streams and durations, make the files compatible, or normalize them and join with the concat filter. Review FFmpeg’s demuxer notes and concat FAQ. |
| There is no audio, or sound disappears between some stories | One or more clips may lack an audio stream or use incompatible audio parameters. | Check every input’s audio stream. Normalize audio and, where appropriate, add silence to clips that have no audio so the playlist has a consistent stream layout. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed or reports a connection problem | The server URL or key is wrong, the key is for another broadcast, the stream is not started, or upload capacity is insufficient. | Recheck the current Live Control Room server URL and key, keep the key private, inspect FFmpeg’s network messages, and test sustained upload capacity. Review YouTube’s stream health status. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload bandwidth, or the host/network may be overloaded or inconsistent. | Choose a lower supported resolution or frame rate and corresponding bitrate, then repeat a representative test. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring the health indicators. |
| The stream stops when a story sequence ends or after a host interruption | The input loop may not be active or supported as invoked, or FFmpeg/the host/network process has stopped. | Test -stream_loop -1 with the actual FFmpeg build and playlist. Separately arrange monitoring and recovery for the host; looping input cannot restart a terminated process. |
| The stream is live, but the full day is not available afterward | YouTube’s automatic archive is not guaranteed to capture streams exceeding 12 hours. | Use a separate local recording or planned archive rotation if retaining the full program matters. |
