How to Run a 24/7 Children’s Story Stream on YouTube Using Ubuntu and FFmpeg

Use Ubuntu and FFmpeg to send prepared children’s stories to YouTube Live, with the right encoder settings, audience designation, rights checks, and a plan for recordings beyond YouTube’s archive limits.

You can run a continuous children’s-story feed by having FFmpeg send prepared media from an Ubuntu computer or server to a YouTube Live encoder stream. YouTube Studio supplies the stream URL and key; FFmpeg reads and loops or schedules your media, encodes it to YouTube-compatible settings, and sends it to that endpoint. A continuous broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed 24-hour replay: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording and use shorter sessions if a complete YouTube archive matters.

What you need before going live

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Channel eligibility and daily live-stream creation limits can affect whether you can start a stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An Ubuntu host with FFmpeg installed, the prepared story media stored where FFmpeg can read it, and enough sustained upload capacity for the full stream.
  • Permission to broadcast every story, narration, illustration, music track, and other visual or audio element in the program.
  • Access to YouTube Studio so you can create or schedule an encoder stream and retrieve its ingest URL and stream key.

The exact Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, media layout, and service configuration vary. The steps below describe the workflow and settings to configure; they are not a tested, universal FFmpeg command line.

Prepare the channel and YouTube stream

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and confirm that the channel is verified and eligible for live streaming. A new channel or a channel with a restriction may not be able to go live immediately.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s live-streaming workflow and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Set the title, description, audience, and other stream details accurately. If the stream is intended for children, select the made-for-kids audience setting; do not choose it merely to reach a particular audience.
  3. In the encoder settings for that stream, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the FFmpeg output configuration on Ubuntu. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script or repository, or expose it in logs you share. If it is disclosed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Start FFmpeg, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before making the stream public or relying on it unattended.

Choose media and YouTube-compatible encoder settings

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Setting Practical target or guidance
Video codec H.264 for the listed ingest bitrate recommendations.
Video bitrate For H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 3 Mbps as a minimum and 8 Mbps as recommended. Higher resolution or frame rate requires choosing a suitable bitrate and checking the host’s encoding capacity and upload connection.
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR).
Keyframes Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
Audio AAC or MP3; YouTube’s stereo audio guidance lists 128 Kbps.
Protocol Use RTMPS where your encoder setup supports it; YouTube recommends it.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular host or connection can sustain them. Select a quality your outbound connection can maintain continuously. YouTube’s network guidance recommends upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate; account for both primary and backup feeds if you use them. A speed-test result is only a snapshot, so test the actual stream and leave headroom.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. For stories, check that the audio is intelligible, levels remain consistent across clips, and transitions do not leave long silent or black sections unless those are intentional. Verify that video and narration stay synchronized. Whether to loop a single file, cycle through a playlist, or schedule separate inputs depends on how your media is organized and on the FFmpeg build and filter strategy you use.

Configure FFmpeg for looping and continuous operation

FFmpeg’s role is to read the prepared video and audio, repeat or sequence the inputs as needed, encode or pass through compatible streams, and send the result to YouTube’s ingest URL using the stream key. There is no single robust command that fits every story library: a single file, several files with different durations, separate narration tracks, and already-encoded media require different looping and synchronization choices.

Before building a long-running service, test your chosen input and output configuration as a short private or unlisted stream. Confirm that looping behaves as intended at the end of the file, that the audio does not drift or stop, and that the YouTube preview shows stable video and audio. Store the stream key securely rather than hard-coding it in a world-readable script.

Run it unattended with supervision

If the Ubuntu host must operate without a person at the keyboard, use a process supervisor such as systemd to start the FFmpeg process after reboot and define how it should behave if FFmpeg exits. Review logs, make restart behavior deliberate, and set up an alert or another way to notice a failed stream. These are operational design choices, not uptime features provided by YouTube. A public GitHub example shows an Ubuntu VPS, local media, FFmpeg, YouTube RTMP ingest, and a systemd service, but it is an example rather than an official or guaranteed-reliable recipe: GitHub repository example.

Monitor both sides of the setup: YouTube’s stream-health status and the Ubuntu process and logs. If recording locally, confirm the recording file is being written and continues to grow. A service that automatically restarts FFmpeg can help recover from a process exit, but it cannot guarantee recovery from a host outage, network failure, YouTube restriction, or exhausted daily stream-creation allowance. Avoid rapid restart loops or attempts to evade platform limits.

Decide whether one event or an archive matters more

A 24/7 live feed does not guarantee a complete 24-hour YouTube replay. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The publication date is not stated on the cited help page. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Approach When it fits Important trade-off
One continuous event Keeping a continuously available live feed is the priority, and a complete on-platform replay is not essential. Do not rely on YouTube to capture a stream longer than 12 hours; DVR may also be limited or unavailable.
Shorter scheduled sessions plus local recording Viewers need accessible replays or you need a dependable copy of the program. Plan session changes and confirm the local recording is saved. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but that is not a promise that every stream will be archived.

Keep a local recording if preserving the complete program matters, and check that it remains available on disk. Segmenting the public broadcast into shorter scheduled sessions can make on-platform replay more practical, but YouTube’s archive guidance does not guarantee capture, and repeated stream creation remains subject to the platform’s rules and limits.

Set the children’s audience designation and plan around its limits

Mark content made for children accurately. YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, Super Chat, comments on live archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications for made-for-kids content. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may still appear. Do not plan audience participation around chat or promise personalized-ad monetization. See YouTube’s made-for-kids feature restrictions.

Check rights and platform rules before broadcasting

Use only story text, narration, cover art, music, and visuals you have the right to stream. YouTube says live content must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; copyright matches and other policy issues may lead to restrictions or removal. A story being old, familiar, or available online does not by itself establish that a particular recording, translation, illustration, or musical arrangement is cleared for your use. Copyright status and legal obligations can vary by work and jurisdiction. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions guidance.

Choose an Ubuntu machine or a VPS

Either an existing Ubuntu computer or a rented VPS can host FFmpeg. The right choice depends on what you already have and whether it can sustain the workload; the public VPS example is not evidence that a server is inherently more reliable or less expensive.

  • Upload capacity: Can the host sustain the total bitrate with the recommended headroom throughout the day?
  • Availability and recovery: Can you access the host, inspect logs, receive failure alerts, and recover after a reboot or network interruption?
  • Storage: Is there room for the prepared media and, if needed, a growing local recording?
  • Encoding resources: Can the machine encode your chosen resolution and frame rate without falling behind?
  • Cost: Compare the cost of a host you already own with any rental, power, network, and storage charges. No host price or guaranteed uptime is established here.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Wrong ingest URL or key, stream not started, or a channel that is not currently eligible to go live. Recheck the stream’s encoder details in Studio, confirm the key has not changed, and verify channel eligibility. Keep the key private.
Stream health reports instability or frames drop Insufficient sustained upload capacity, bitrate too high for the connection, or host/network load. Check actual stream health and host upload use; reduce the bitrate or resolution and retest. Leave upload headroom rather than relying only on a speed test.
Video appears but audio is missing or distorted Input mapping, unsupported or misconfigured audio, or incorrect levels. Check FFmpeg’s input and audio mapping, use AAC or MP3, verify stereo audio settings, and test the output in the Live Control Room preview.
Audio drifts, stops, or restarts badly at a loop boundary Media files differ in duration or timestamp behavior, or the chosen loop/synchronization approach does not fit the inputs. Test transitions with the exact media set before going live; adjust the input sequencing and synchronization strategy for the installed FFmpeg build.
FFmpeg stops and the broadcast ends Process crash, host reboot, exhausted resources, or network interruption. Inspect service and FFmpeg logs, check host resources and connectivity, and configure supervision and alerts. Automatic process restart cannot recover every platform or host failure.
No complete YouTube replay appears The stream ran longer than YouTube’s documented archive window or archive capture was otherwise unavailable. Use the local recording as the preservation copy; consider shorter scheduled sessions if viewers need on-platform replays.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining an Ubuntu host and FFmpeg process is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. For a cloud alternative, start the free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stream a story playlist instead of repeating one video?

Yes. FFmpeg can be configured to sequence prepared media, but the looping and synchronization setup depends on the files and FFmpeg build; test the full sequence before relying on it.

Does YouTube guarantee that a stream under 12 hours will be archived?

No. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; it does not promise that every eligible stream will be captured.
