Neither Google Cloud nor a home PC is universally cheaper. Compare the selected Compute Engine VM and its separately billed resources with your PC’s measured power use and local electricity rate; Google lists VM-to-YouTube data transfer as no charge in the applicable network-pricing category. A useful decision also accounts for stream settings, monitoring, and YouTube’s warning that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
How to compare the monthly cost
Use the same operating hours, stream quality, and uptime target for both options. A 730-hour month is a convenient approximation, but use the actual number of hours if you want a precise estimate. A lower bill does not establish equal reliability: power, internet stability, configuration, and monitoring differ between a home setup and a cloud VM.
Estimate Google Cloud
- Choose the Compute Engine region, VM family and size, operating system, disk, and billing arrangement. The applicable VM rate varies by configuration and usage. Check the current estimate with Google Cloud’s pricing calculator and the Compute Engine pricing page.
- Multiply the applicable hourly VM charge by the hours you expect it to run. Add disk and any other separately billed resources that apply to your configuration; the instance price alone may not include them.
- Do not add an outbound fee for the VM-to-YouTube transfer under Google’s listed VM-to-Google-product category, which is labeled no charge. That rule does not make the VM or other resources free. See Google Cloud network pricing and confirm that the category fits your setup.
Estimate a home PC
Measure average wall power while the PC runs the actual playlist and encoder workload, then use your electricity tariff:
monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × local electricity price per kWh

A plug-in electricity monitor can provide the wattage input; no particular model is required or recommended here. Add only genuinely incremental expenses, such as a power upgrade or a new internet plan. If the PC would be switched on regardless, decide whether your comparison counts its full power use or only the additional draw caused by streaming, and apply that choice consistently. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s electricity tables provide residential price context by period and geography, but a national or seasonal figure is not a substitute for your household’s rate.

The cloud estimate depends on region, VM type and size, operating system, disk, billing arrangement, and runtime. The home estimate depends on wall draw, local tariff, and whether the PC’s consumption is fully incremental. Without those inputs, a numeric winner would be guesswork.

Check the stream workload before choosing hardware
Base the VM or home PC choice on the settings you plan to stream, not a generic minimum. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates guide gives recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate, and advises testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Check that the chosen system and connection can sustain your target settings.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help’s “Archive live streams” page says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That means an uninterrupted month-long stream should not be treated as one guaranteed complete replay.

- If you need YouTube archives, plan stream sessions shorter than 12 hours rather than relying on one month-long session.
- Keep a local archive backup if retaining the content matters; YouTube recommends one.
- Include the restart schedule and recording plan in the operating comparison. Session boundaries, recovery, and hands-on oversight are part of the practical setup, not just the monthly bill.
Keep the playlist eligible and technically stable
Before streaming, verify that you have the rights needed for the video and audio in the playlist and that your channel and stream comply with YouTube’s applicable policies. A playlist that runs continuously is not exempt from copyright rules. Use the encoder guidance above to set codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate; test upload capacity and watch stream health instead of assuming a connection or VM will sustain the chosen settings indefinitely.
