Measure the equipment at the wall outlet for a representative period, record its energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply that figure by the electricity unit rate on your bill. Compare setups over the same runtime and under similar conditions. A watt reading by itself is not enough to calculate a stream’s electricity cost.
What you need to measure
Decide which equipment’s electricity use you want to count: for example, the streaming computer or encoder, plus any other devices you intend to include. Keep that boundary the same in every comparison. A plug-in electricity usage meter goes between the wall outlet and the equipment; check that it is compatible with your outlet and electrical system and rated for the load.
Before choosing a meter, check its current specifications for:
- Whether it accumulates energy in kWh, rather than showing only instantaneous watts.
- Whether it can reset or retain readings for the period you want to measure.
- Whether it can calculate cost after you enter a unit rate, if that feature matters to you.
- Its electrical compatibility, maximum rating, and documented measurement features.
The Efficiency Maine plug-in meter instructions describe connecting a monitor at an outlet and calculating usage cost. They do not establish current specifications for every meter or model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Measure the setup consistently
- Connect the equipment. Plug the meter into the outlet, then connect the equipment you chose to measure. Avoid changing which devices are included halfway through a comparison.
- Record the starting reading. Note the accumulated kWh, or reset the meter’s energy counter if it supports that option. Also write down the date, start time, equipment, and stream configuration.
- Run a representative test. Measure while the system is operating as it normally would for the stream. If the equipment’s load varies, a longer test is more informative than a brief snapshot. Record the exact test duration.
- Record the ending reading. Note the final accumulated kWh and subtract the starting figure. The difference is the energy consumed during the test.
- Repeat for another setup. Use the same measurement duration and comparable operating conditions. Record the equipment included and any changed settings so the comparison is meaningful.
If your meter shows only watts, record readings over the test period and note the duration; one instantaneous reading cannot establish energy use when the load changes. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that watts measure power at a moment, while watt-hours measure electricity used over time: Measuring electricity.
Calculate the electricity charge
For a meter that records energy, use:
Measured kWh × applicable electricity price per kWh = energy charge for the test
For example, if your meter records 0.8 kWh during a test and your applicable rate is 20 cents per kWh, the test’s energy charge is 16 cents. Use your own bill or tariff for the rate; this example is arithmetic, not a suggested electricity price.

If you have only a steady watt reading, convert it to energy for a known runtime:

To estimate a day or year from a shorter test, scale the measured kWh in proportion to the expected runtime, then apply the unit rate. Treat that as an estimate: it is only as representative as the test interval. The Efficiency Maine instructions show an annualization approach using measured kWh, test hours, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and a per-kWh price. Any sample price in those instructions is not a universal or current rate.

Use the rate that applies to your location and time
Electricity rates vary by location, customer category, and tariff. Use the marginal usage rate on your current bill, not a national average. If your tariff has time-of-use pricing, calculate the energy charge using the rates and hours that apply during the measurement period. Keep fixed daily standing or service charges separate: they are not an incremental energy cost caused by running the stream. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly reports differences among U.S. locations and customer categories; Ofgem explains UK unit rates and standing charges on its price-cap page.
For context only, the EIA reported a preliminary 2025 U.S. annual average retail electricity price of 13.63¢ per kWh, and a residential average of 17.30¢ per kWh, based on the February 2026 Electric Power Monthly. Its preliminary 2025 annual average ranged from 8.20¢ per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢ per kWh in Hawaii. These are U.S. averages, not a substitute for your own tariff.

- Measurement duration and equipment included.
- Measured kWh during that interval.
- Stream configuration, such as resolution and encoder settings.
- Applicable unit rate or time-of-use rates.
- Resulting energy charge, clearly identified as measured or estimated.
YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance addresses delivery quality and stream health, not the electricity draw of a particular computer. It does not provide a wattage conversion for a bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. Measure the actual equipment in each configuration instead of inferring power use from video settings.

A short test can miss changes in load across a full day. If the stream computer, encoder, or attached equipment behaves differently at different times, measure longer or repeat the test and label any scaled-up daily or annual figure as an estimate.
YouTube’s cited encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That platform behavior may matter when planning extended streams; it does not establish the energy cost of a 24/7 setup or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
