Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere isn’t enough information to identify one cause of an FFmpeg YouTube livestream disconnect on an Oracle Cloud Ubuntu VM. First establish whether FFmpeg exits, its input stalls, an output or TLS connection fails, or FFmpeg keeps running while YouTube stops receiving a healthy feed. Then compare the failure time with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and work through the ingest URL, network controls, connection-tracking metrics, and upload capacity.
Start by identifying what disconnects
A “disconnect” can describe several different failures. FFmpeg may terminate, stop getting data from its input, fail while writing to YouTube, or remain alive while YouTube reports that the incoming stream is unhealthy. Those cases need different fixes; changing network rules before identifying the symptom can obscure the cause.
Capture evidence before changing settings
- Record the exact FFmpeg command, but redact the YouTube stream key and any URL component that contains it. Never post the key in a log, screenshot, or support request.
- Record the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, the input type, output protocol, resolution, frame rate, codec, and configured bitrate.
- Save complete FFmpeg standard-error output around the incident, with UTC timestamps. Note whether the process exits, remains running, or stops producing output.
- At the same UTC time, check YouTube Live Control Room for stream status and health. YouTube’s stream-health information helps distinguish a disconnected feed from one that is connected but unhealthy.
- Reproduce with representative audio and motion, then monitor health during the test. YouTube recommends testing the audio and movement expected in the planned stream.
Use the resulting evidence to classify the incident: input/source stall, CPU or encoder overload, network write failure, TLS or ingest configuration error, or a feed that YouTube receives but considers unhealthy. These are diagnostic branches, not a diagnosis of your VM.
Check the YouTube ingest URL and RTMPS setup
Copy the ingest URL from YouTube Live Control Room rather than guessing a hostname or reusing an old RTMP address. YouTube may show its ordinary RTMP address by default; if you intend to use RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. If your FFmpeg command takes the key or path separately, combine those values only as required by the command’s documented format.

For RTMPS certificate errors or timeouts
- Confirm the output URL actually uses the
rtmpsscheme and matches the current URL shown in Live Control Room. - Confirm that the connection uses TCP port 443. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies port 443 and requires the destination hostname for authentication through TLS SNI.
- Make sure the hostname is preserved in the connection. A TLS connection can be initiated without a hostname, but Google says the hostname is required for server authentication.
- Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that the output URL, port, key, and path are formed correctly for your command.
A timeout after reaching a YouTube server can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Treat an SSL error, timeout, or failed handshake as a reason to verify the actual scheme, hostname, port, and FFmpeg protocol support—not as proof that OCI is blocking the connection.
Check OCI and Ubuntu network controls separately
Outbound connectivity depends on more than one policy layer. Inspect the instance’s network security groups (NSGs), the security lists attached to its subnet, and the Ubuntu guest firewall. An allow rule at one layer does not establish that the full route permits the connection.

- Verify that outbound TCP/TLS traffic can reach the selected YouTube RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
- Check the route table and the applicable NSG and subnet security-list rules, along with the guest firewall. Ensure response traffic is permitted by the policies in use.
- Do not apply an inbound-port-opening recipe without a reason: this workload publishes outbound to YouTube. The required rule depends on the instance’s VCN, subnet, route table, NSGs, security lists, and guest firewall.
For intermittent failures, inspect VNIC connection tracking
In OCI, inspect the connection-tracking metrics for the instance’s attached VNIC and correlate them with the UTC disconnect times. Oracle documents metrics for packets dropped because the connection-tracking table is full, as well as connection-tracking utilization. Any nonzero full-table dropped-packet count indicates the table is full; 100% utilization also indicates a full table. Record the affected time range before attributing a disconnect to this condition.
Compare bitrate with sustained upload capacity
A configured bitrate must fit the sustained capacity of the actual outbound path, not merely a brief speed-test peak. YouTube recommends measuring upload bitrate and choosing a quality that is reliable for the available connection. Its current H.264 recommendations include:

These are YouTube’s encoder-setting recommendations, not evidence that a particular OCI VM, region, or route can sustain those rates. Record your codec, resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and a sustained outbound-capacity measurement. A temporary lower-bitrate test can help check whether capacity is involved, but by itself it does not prove the root cause.
Check the encoder settings that affect stream health
- YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols and H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported video codecs; bitrate recommendations vary by codec.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval if possible; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and 44.1 kHz stereo audio.
- YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Use settings appropriate to the source and the sustained outbound capacity you have measured.
Choose a recovery method you can verify
Whether FFmpeg can resume after an interruption depends on the installed build, protocol and muxer path, input source, and how the process is managed. There is no version-independent guarantee that a reconnect option will resume a YouTube live stream at the interrupted media position.

- Check the local help and documentation for the installed FFmpeg binary and the specific input and output protocols in your command.
- Run a controlled test with the real source and endpoint. Capture logs and confirm what happens after the failure: whether FFmpeg exits, reconnects, stalls, or continues writing.
- If a service manager or wrapper relaunches FFmpeg, verify that it does not create duplicate streams, restart continuously, or conceal the original error. Preserve logs from the first failure as well as subsequent attempts.
- After any change, test the complete stream path and confirm both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream health.
A process restart may restore a feed, but do not assume it resumes at the interrupted media position or creates a seamless broadcast. Validate the behavior on the actual setup.

| What you observe | What to check first | How to validate a fix |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits at the incident time | Read the complete timestamped stderr around the exit. Determine whether the message points to the input, encoder, TLS setup, or output socket. | Reproduce with the same input and endpoint, then confirm FFmpeg stays running and YouTube reports a healthy feed. |
| FFmpeg remains alive but stops receiving source data | Check the input/source and timestamps to see whether new media reaches FFmpeg. Do not assume an output-network rule fixes an input stall. | Verify input progress and output progress independently during a representative test. |
| FFmpeg reports an SSL, handshake, or connection timeout error | Verify the Control Room URL, rtmps scheme, port 443, hostname/SNI, and RTMPS support in the installed build. |
Repeat the test with the corrected URL and inspect both FFmpeg diagnostics and YouTube health. |
| FFmpeg reports a write or socket error | Correlate the error time with NSG, subnet security-list, route, guest-firewall, and VNIC connection-tracking evidence. | Change only the policy or condition supported by that evidence, then check for recurrence during a monitored test. |
| YouTube reports an unhealthy feed while FFmpeg stays connected | Compare stream health with the configured bitrate, measured sustained upload capacity, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. | Test representative audio and motion with settings that fit measured capacity; monitor YouTube’s health throughout. |
| Disconnects are intermittent and no clear FFmpeg error explains them | Compare UTC event times against VNIC connection-tracking drops and utilization, as well as YouTube health and FFmpeg logs. | Look for repeatable time-correlated evidence before changing OCI policies or claiming a cause. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Oracle Cloud blocking my RTMPS stream?
A disconnect alone does not establish that. Compare timestamped FFmpeg output with OCI network-policy and VNIC connection-tracking evidence before attributing the failure to OCI.
Why does my FFmpeg YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
The symptom can come from different points in the path, including the input, encoder, ingest/TLS setup, network controls, or sustained upload capacity. The logs and YouTube health status at the same time help narrow it down.
