Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In YouTube Live Control Room, red means a critical stream-health error and yellow means a moderate one. Red errors may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors may degrade quality. The color shows severity, not the cause: read the full timestamped message beside the Health Indicator for the issue and the corrective instructions.
What red and yellow mean
| Color | YouTube’s severity | Possible effect | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Critical | May inhibit the event from starting or cause viewers to have problems. | Read the adjacent error and correct the setting it identifies. |
| Yellow | Moderate | May cause degraded quality during the event. | Read the adjacent error and address its named cause; the stream may not be completely interrupted. |
YouTube Help defines these two severity levels, but the official pages cited here do not establish a complete color legend or a precise definition for green. Do not treat green as a guaranteed threshold or use any color alone to diagnose a problem. YouTube’s stream-health guidance explains the indicators and messages.
Read the message before changing settings
Errors appear beside the Health Indicator with a timestamp. The message gives specific information and instructions; if the error is not fixed, it continues to appear. Note the time and read the full text, then use the setting named in that message to guide your fix. A red or yellow warning by itself does not tell you whether the cause is bitrate, format, keyframes, or another configuration issue. YouTube’s list of live-streaming error messages describes examples and corrections.
Match the fix to the error
Format or codec
If the message reports an unsupported format, check the container and audio/video codecs in your encoder. YouTube’s format summary directs streamers to H.264 video and AAC audio; its specific audio examples also list AAC or MP3 as supported. Follow the exact error and current encoder guidance rather than assuming every combination is accepted.

Bitrate or available upload bandwidth
Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the selected ingestion resolution and YouTube’s current guidance for that codec. The recommended values vary by resolution and codec: for example, YouTube’s encoder table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps using H.264; for 720p at 30 fps it lists 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, and 8 Mbps for H.264. These are settings guidance, not universal targets. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table for your exact format.
Your available upload capacity must exceed the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; if sending primary and backup streams, account for both streams plus that headroom. If the connection cannot support the selected bitrate, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower ingestion resolution that matches the encoder output. Do not confuse upload capacity with download speed. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers bitrate and upload requirements.

Audio or video stream configuration
Check whether the encoder is sending the expected number of audio and video streams and whether their settings match YouTube’s requirements. Error examples include missing or multiple streams, audio channel count, interlaced video, and excessive frame rate. Change only the setting named in the warning, then check the preview and stream health again.
Keyframe frequency
YouTube recommends sending a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the encoder’s keyframe interval if the message reports keyframes or buffering; do not assume this warning is a bitrate problem.

Resolution
Make sure the video dimensions coming from the encoder match the ingestion resolution selected in Live Control Room. A mismatch can trigger a resolution error even if the stream otherwise appears to be running.
Primary and backup streams
If you use a backup stream, compare it with the primary. YouTube’s error examples flag mismatches in resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, or audio settings. Align the settings that the message identifies so the backup can serve as a match for the primary.

Test and monitor the full setup
- Before going live, test the complete encoder and connection with representative audio and movement, not just a static screen.
- Check the preview and confirm audio and video are coming through as expected.
- Watch the Health Indicator during the test and note each message’s color, timestamp, and full text.
- Correct the named setting and confirm the same timestamped error no longer appears. If it persists, re-check the relevant encoder setting and upload capacity.
- During the event, keep monitoring the health messages and audio/video quality; a warning can appear or recur after the stream starts.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and leaving upload-bandwidth headroom. Its settings and interface can change, so consult the linked official guidance for current values.
