Start with the OBS Stats counter that is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain; Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag and Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag point to different performance bottlenecks on your computer. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages as a second view, and test with the movement and audio your actual stream will contain.
What each OBS Stats counter tells you
OBS groups problems that can all look like a choppy stream, but they occur at different points in the pipeline. Identify the counter before changing settings; a network fix is not a general remedy for rendering or encoding lag.

Frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance, so if either performance counter rises, investigate the computer and OBS workload rather than assuming the internet connection is at fault.
How to diagnose a warning in order
- Open OBS Stats during a representative scene. Reproduce the demanding part of your stream—such as gameplay with rapid movement, overlays, transitions, and active audio—rather than judging from an idle or static scene.
- Note which counter increases. Keep network dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag separate. If none of these counters rises, do not infer that every viewer is receiving smooth playback.
- If network drops rise, check connection and bitrate. OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate as a troubleshooting step when the connection cannot sustain it. Its dynamically changing bitrate option can help manage congestion and reduce frame dropping, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can lower stream quality. - If rendering or encoding lag rises, investigate performance. Check the OBS performance guidance before changing encoder workload or output settings. Frame rate matters to both categories; a network bitrate adjustment will not, by itself, address these performance signals. See OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guide.
- Check YouTube’s view of the stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, review stream-health messages alongside OBS Stats. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health during the event. Its encoder settings and stream-health guidance also includes bitrate recommendations tied to stream settings; use the row for your resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
When viewers report buffering but OBS looks clean
Zero network drops in OBS does not prove that playback is smooth for every viewer. People watch on different devices, from different locations and internet connections, and can have buffering even when the streamer-side network counter remains at zero. Consider whether a lower bitrate or YouTube’s recommendations for the stream settings could make playback more accessible to a wider audience. Why there is no universal “bad” percentage
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal percentage threshold at which an OBS Stats counter becomes unacceptable. Interpret the counter by its category, whether it rises during representative workload, and whether YouTube reports a corresponding stream-health issue. A small or intermittent change cannot be translated into a universal verdict without that context.
