Use FFmpeg logs to confirm that your encoder opened the intended media, mapped its audio and video, initialized an RTMP or RTMPS output, and is continuing to send data. Then confirm receipt in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: look for the incoming preview and check Stream health or Stream status. FFmpeg’s progress alone does not prove YouTube is receiving or accepting the stream.
What FFmpeg logs can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg reports what is happening on the encoder side: input and stream selection, output initialization, progress, and errors. YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the platform-side evidence, including an incoming preview and stream-health or status messages. Use both views rather than treating one log line as a definitive ingest verdict.
- Output opened and progress continues: FFmpeg is producing output and attempting to transmit it. Check YouTube for receipt and health.
- Output initialization or write/network error: investigate the command, connection, and complete log. A generic error does not identify a particular YouTube status by itself.
- Preview appears: YouTube has a feed available to preview. Check the separate health/status indicator for warnings.
- No preview: verify the selected stream’s URL and key, confirm FFmpeg is running, and read the status message in Live Control Room.
The official guidance does not provide a complete, version-independent translation table from every FFmpeg error string to every YouTube health state.

Verify the destination and stream key
In YouTube Studio, open the relevant live stream in Live Control Room and confirm that FFmpeg is configured with the stream URL and key for that stream. YouTube describes the key as the information that lets the encoder send a feed for YouTube to accept. Treat it like a password: redact it from logs, screenshots, and anything shared publicly. Run FFmpeg with useful log visibility
FFmpeg’s documented default log level is
info. Preserve the complete relevant run output, including startup and the final error or shutdown lines; a cropped progress line can hide the cause. FFmpeg also documents log-level controls and report-file options in its command-line documentation. If you change verbosity, retain enough context to see input detection, mapping, output setup, and any later failure. -
Confirm local input, mapping, and output
Read the startup output to check that FFmpeg opened the intended input and mapped the intended video and audio streams. Confirm it initialized the RTMP/RTMPS output. While the command runs, check that progress continues and watch for output or write errors. RTMP is a multimedia streaming protocol over TCP/IP; successful local setup still describes the encoder and its transmission attempt, not YouTube’s full server-side assessment. Check YouTube’s incoming preview and status
In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview, then inspect Stream health or Stream status. YouTube says the status view can show specific errors and instructions. Follow the message shown for your stream rather than guessing from a generic FFmpeg line. Before an event, verify the intended watch page and confirm the picture and sound as appropriate. Compare the actual output with current encoder guidance
Check protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec against YouTube’s current recommendations for the format you selected. YouTube recommends RTMPS, supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 options in its encoder guidance, allows up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and recommends CBR bitrate encoding with AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommendations vary by codec and format; consult the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. Test with representative audio and video before going live.

Example H.264 bitrate recommendations
These are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 ingestion, not performance measurements. Match the value to the resolution and frame rate you are actually sending.

Troubleshoot by symptom
FFmpeg is running, but YouTube shows no preview
- Confirm the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room.
- Check that FFmpeg actually opened the output and that progress continues; an open input alone is not evidence of a sent feed.
- Read YouTube’s displayed status message and follow its instruction. Do not infer a specific platform-side cause from a generic local log line.
FFmpeg reports an output or network error
- Review the full command and complete run output, especially output initialization and the final error or shutdown lines.
- Check the destination URL, key, and connection, then compare protocol and encoding settings with YouTube’s current guidance.
- Use YouTube’s Live Control Room status to establish whether it received a feed or reported a separate problem. The precise cause depends on the command, FFmpeg build, remote response, and full log.
YouTube preview appears but reports a warning
Receipt is not the same as a clean health status. Read the warning in Live Control Room and check the corresponding output setting—such as codec, bitrate for the selected format, frame rate, keyframe interval, or audio—against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Verify playback on the intended watch page before the event.
