To update a YouTube stream key in FFmpeg on an AWS Mumbai EC2 server, copy the current key and matching stream URL from YouTube Studio, replace the old destination in the FFmpeg command or service configuration, then test the feed in Live Control Room. For encrypted delivery, use the RTMPS URL shown in YouTube’s stream settings—not an assumed RTMP address—and confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
Before changing the key
A YouTube stream key is a secret credential. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, articles and shared logs. If you reset it, the encoder must be updated with the replacement key before it can publish to that stream. See YouTube’s guidance for managing live stream settings.
The key and stream URL are specific to the intended YouTube stream. Copy both from the same stream in Live Control Room; using a valid key with another stream’s destination can send the feed to the wrong event or lead to a rejected connection.
Get the current YouTube stream key and RTMPS URL
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Under Stream key, copy the key for the stream you intend to use. To rotate a compromised or outdated key, select Reset and copy the newly generated key. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key.
- In Stream settings, locate Stream URL. To use encrypted delivery, select the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL and copy it exactly. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; do not treat that as the secure endpoint. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Replace the destination in FFmpeg on EC2
Find where the publishing URL is configured on the Mumbai instance. It may be in a shell command, script, service unit or environment-managed configuration. Replace the old endpoint and key with the exact RTMPS destination format and key from the intended YouTube stream.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/PATH/STREAM_KEY'This is a pattern, not a usable destination: replace INPUT, SERVER, PATH and STREAM_KEY with your actual input and the precise values supplied in Live Control Room. Do not infer a path, publish a real key in documentation, or reuse an undocumented destination. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol family publishes using the FLV muxer; support for RTMPS depends on how the installed FFmpeg build was compiled. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation if the RTMPS scheme is not accepted.
If you store the key in an environment variable or service configuration, restrict access to that configuration and avoid printing the expanded publishing URL in shared logs. Update the configuration that actually launches FFmpeg, not just a separate copy of the command.

Check video, audio and connection settings
Use settings suited to the source, codec and available outbound bandwidth; there is no single bitrate that fits every resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose the applicable bitrate from YouTube’s table for your codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating one value as universal: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Run a preflight before the event
- Save the updated command or configuration and start FFmpeg using the same service or launch method that will be used for the event.
- Inspect FFmpeg’s output for a successful connection and ongoing publishing rather than an immediate protocol, TLS or authentication error.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview and check stream health. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to wait for the preview and then choose Go live when ready. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Check the actual audio and video, including movement and sound levels expected during the event. Test before the scheduled start and continue monitoring YouTube’s stream health.
RTMP or RTMPS?

Troubleshoot common failures
Key rejected or feed appears on the wrong event
- Confirm the key and stream URL were both copied from the intended stream’s current Live Control Room settings.
- If you selected Reset, make sure the FFmpeg launch configuration uses the replacement key rather than the old one.
TLS or SSL error
- Check that you copied the RTMPS URL, including its host and path, from the lock-icon setting.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube advises trying port 443 if an SSL error persists; use the endpoint and port appropriate to the provided YouTube settings.
Connection timeout
- Recheck the copied destination and RTMPS support first.
- Then inspect the instance’s outbound route, host firewall and any network egress policy. Those settings depend on the particular EC2 setup. Do not open inbound streaming ports just to publish from FFmpeg.
Cannot connect to the EC2 instance
For SSH access to a Linux instance, check that the instance is running and that its security group allows inbound SSH from your operator IP address. AWS also documents browser-based EC2 Instance Connect and Systems Manager Session Manager as access alternatives. These are administrative access controls, separate from FFmpeg’s outbound connection to YouTube. See AWS’s Linux instance connection guidance.
