A “connection reset” means the RTMP/TCP session ended; it does not identify why. First confirm the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key, then establish whether FFmpeg fails while connecting or after it has published successfully. Only after that should you change encoder or network settings. FFmpeg’s tcp_nodelay and tcp_keepalive options alter TCP behavior, but neither is documented as a general fix for resets.
Start by locating when the reset happens
Save the complete FFmpeg stderr output and the exact command that produced it. Redact the stream key everywhere before sharing either one; it is a credential. Note the timestamp and whether the error appears immediately during connection/publish or after a period of successful output. That distinction helps narrow the investigation, but the phrase “connection reset” by itself cannot identify the cause.
- Immediate failure: prioritize the destination URL, current key, protocol, and any URL overrides.
- Mid-stream failure: also examine encoder health, YouTube’s stream-health messages, and outbound network stability.
Verify YouTube’s current destination and key
Open YouTube Live Control Room and compare the ingest server URL and stream key currently shown there with the values in the FFmpeg output command. YouTube’s guidance for third-party encoder start errors specifically recommends copying the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder (YouTube troubleshooting guidance). Do not assume an older saved destination or key is still the active one.
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS for live ingest and recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the RTMPS destination and settings supported by your installed FFmpeg build (YouTube encoder settings; YouTube RTMPS guidance).

Inspect the complete output URL and overrides
FFmpeg’s RTMP URL contains a server, optional port, application, and stream identifier. The rtmp_app and rtmp_playpath options can override values parsed from the URL. Before changing transport flags, inspect the full output URL and check whether either override appears in the command or its configuration (FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation).
Check that output options are applied to the output, not accidentally to an input. Option scope and placement matter; a flag copied from an unrelated example may not affect the connection you are troubleshooting.

Check encoder health and YouTube-compatible output
YouTube recommends testing a stream before an event, monitoring stream health, using constant bitrate (CBR), and targeting a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current settings table rather than transferring a value from another mode (YouTube encoder settings).
| H.264 output mode | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed H.264 modes, not universal settings for every codec or frame rate. Compare your actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against the appropriate current table entry.

Check whether FFmpeg is an old build, whether local encoding is completing normally, and whether CPU load is sustained at a level that disrupts output. YouTube also advises checking encoder version and health. A mismatch in media settings can harm ingest or stream health, but the available guidance does not establish that a settings mismatch causes every transport reset (YouTube troubleshooting guidance).
Test the outbound network path
If FFmpeg is producing healthy output locally, check outbound internet stability and watch the live-health indicators and messages in YouTube. YouTube advises testing outbound connection strength and contacting the ISP if connectivity is unreliable (YouTube troubleshooting guidance).

Where available, a wired Ethernet connection can be a useful controlled comparison with the existing network path; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed remedy. If a reset continues, record whether the change in connection path affects the timing or frequency of failures rather than treating one successful retry as proof of a fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the FFmpeg TCP options actually do
Consult the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and inspect its RTMP protocol help (for example, ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp). FFmpeg documents RTMP as operating over TCP/IP and describes these options as behavior controls, not reset-specific recovery features (FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation).

| Option | Documented behavior | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
tcp_nodelay=1 |
Disables Nagle’s algorithm; the documented default is 0. | It is not documented as a universal remedy for a reset. |
tcp_keepalive=1 |
Enables the basic TCP keepalive socket option; the documented default is 0. | It does not expose platform-specific keepalive tuning there, and is not documented as a universal remedy for a reset. |
Use a flag only when you understand the behavior you are testing, change one variable at a time, and compare timestamped logs. Do not treat timeout as a magic reconnect switch: the RTMP documentation describes it in the context of listening for incoming connections, and option semantics and units can depend on protocol. Likewise, do not confuse input-side options with output-side options.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Observed symptom | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Reset immediately while connecting or publishing | Current Live Control Room URL and key; RTMP versus RTMPS destination; rtmp_app or rtmp_playpath overrides; output-option placement. |
Correct the destination or key and test using the supported RTMPS settings if available in your FFmpeg build. |
| FFmpeg publishes, then the session resets | Full stderr sequence and timestamp; local encode completion and CPU load; YouTube stream-health messages; outbound connection stability. | Compare media settings with YouTube’s matching recommendation and test the outbound path. |
| Local output appears healthy, but resets continue | Whether outbound connectivity is stable; whether YouTube reports a health warning; whether a controlled wired comparison changes the outcome. | Keep timestamped logs and escalate to YouTube or the network/hosting provider with the evidence. |
What to include when escalating
If the key and settings are current, local encoder output is healthy, and outbound connectivity appears stable but resets persist, send YouTube or your network/hosting provider a concise incident record. Include the exact time and timezone, destination protocol, FFmpeg version and build, the redacted command, and the relevant sequence of error messages. Never include the stream key. The official guidance cited here does not identify a single cause for an unspecified reset, so a precise incident record is more useful than presenting one flag as a diagnosis.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings, rather than diagnose a local FFmpeg publisher, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded at up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
