Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf FFmpeg says your YouTube stream key is invalid—or fails to connect—first verify that the stream key and stream URL both come from the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Then check that FFmpeg is using them in its output destination with the correct RTMP or RTMPS protocol and publishing format. A timeout or TLS error points to a connection or protocol problem, not necessarily a bad key.
First, identify what kind of failure you have
“Key not accepted” can describe several different failures. YouTube treats the stream key as a password-like credential, but FFmpeg also needs the correct server endpoint and a publishable output configuration. Check the error stage before resetting anything.
- Authentication or rejected-key message: check that the key belongs to the selected stream and has not been replaced by a reset.
- Connection timeout: check the supplied server URL, route, port, and whether the FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol.
- TLS or certificate error: check that you copied the RTMPS URL—not just changed an RTMP URL’s scheme—and that the client supports RTMPS.
- Connection starts, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: investigate output compatibility, encoder errors, CPU load, and network egress.
YouTube lists distinct troubleshooting paths for key refresh, SSL errors, and timeouts; none of those messages alone proves that the key is wrong. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance and RTMPS troubleshooting.
Copy the key and URL from the same YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Select the live stream you intend FFmpeg to publish to.
- Copy that stream’s current Stream URL and Stream key. They are separate settings: the key does not tell FFmpeg which server endpoint to contact. YouTube describes stream keys as like your stream’s “password and address.”
- Replace any old stored values in FFmpeg’s command or configuration. A key copied from another scheduled stream, or an old value left behind after a reset, may be rejected.
- Keep the key private. Do not post it in logs, screenshots, shell-history examples, or support messages. If it has been exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update every encoder instance that uses it. Resetting makes the old credential unsuitable for this configuration.
Use the URL shown for the selected stream rather than a remembered or hard-coded server address. YouTube’s stream settings instructions explain where to find and reset the key.

Check FFmpeg’s output URL and publishing format
In FFmpeg, the YouTube destination belongs on the output side of the command. Putting a key in an input argument or treating the key as a complete destination does not tell FFmpeg how to publish to YouTube.
FFmpeg documents RTMP URLs as rtmp://[username:password@]server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath]. The server, optional port, application path, and playpath are meaningful parts of the destination. Its publishing example uses the FLV muxer. See the FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.

ffmpeg -re -i input-file -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_OR_RTMPS_OUTPUT_URL_FROM_YOUTUBE'
This is a command shape, not a ready-to-run command for every input, build, or account. Replace the placeholder with the output URL and key arrangement required by the selected YouTube stream. Do not paste a real key into a public example. The -f flv option specifies the publishing muxer used in FFmpeg’s RTMP example; if it is missing, the output may not be formed as intended.
Inspect the final destination argument
- Confirm it is an output argument after the input options, not part of the input filename or input URL.
- Compare the complete server and path arrangement with the URL supplied by YouTube. Watch for missing path components, extra slashes, spaces, or misplaced credentials.
- Do not assume every account or stream uses an identical endpoint. Use the current Live Control Room URL for that stream and protocol.
- Ensure the command specifies an appropriate output muxer, such as
-f flvfor the documented RTMP publishing form.
Use RTMP or RTMPS consistently
YouTube supports RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL and is recommended by YouTube for encrypted ingestion. The regular RTMP URL may be displayed by default; to use RTMPS, expose and copy the RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room rather than simply changing rtmp:// to rtmps://. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

- For an SSL certificate error: verify that both the RTMPS scheme and server match YouTube’s supplied RTMPS endpoint. If the URL is otherwise correct, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
- For a timeout: confirm the endpoint and protocol, then check whether the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and whether the network permits outbound traffic to it.
- To check protocol availability: inspect the actual FFmpeg build in use—for example, run
ffmpeg -protocols—and confirm RTMP/RTMPS support is available. Builds can differ.
A command that parses is not proof that FFmpeg can negotiate the selected protocol. A TLS failure or timeout should be investigated as a connection setup problem before treating the key as invalid.
Check stream compatibility after the connection works
Codec and bitrate settings matter when YouTube receives a feed but reports compatibility or stream-health problems. They are not a general fix for an authentication rejection. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and codec; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the applicable values rather than choosing one universal bitrate.

- Use a codec and settings compatible with YouTube’s current guidance for your stream.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder allows it, and keep it within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds.
- If YouTube reports poor stream health, inspect FFmpeg’s output and errors, encoder CPU load, and outbound internet connectivity.
- If the local output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube still cannot receive it, revisit the selected endpoint and network egress.
YouTube also identifies HLS as an alternative in cases where RTMP capabilities are insufficient; do not switch ingestion protocols unless the selected workflow and encoder support that option.

- Copying only the key and omitting the stream URL.
- Using a key from a different scheduled stream, or retaining a key invalidated by a reset.
- Putting the key or destination on the input side rather than in FFmpeg’s output destination.
- Using a remembered server URL instead of the URL for the intended stream in Live Control Room.
- Mixing RTMP and RTMPS values, or selecting RTMPS without support in the local FFmpeg build.
- Malformed server, port, app, or playpath components in the output URL.
- Omitting the RTMP publishing muxer, such as
-f flv. - Reading a timeout or SSL error as definite proof of a rejected key.
- Exposing the stream key in a log, screenshot, command example, or public support post.
What to send if you still need help
Record the exact FFmpeg error and the FFmpeg version/build configuration. State whether the endpoint came from the intended Live Control Room stream, whether you used RTMP or RTMPS, and whether you tried a fresh or reset key. For TLS errors, say whether you tried the supplied RTMPS endpoint and port 443; for timeouts, include the network environment and whether another supported encoder can reach the same endpoint.

Redact the key completely before sharing logs or command lines. YouTube recommends refreshing the key and updating the encoder for relevant third-party encoder startup errors. If another encoder reaches the same endpoint but FFmpeg does not, that helps isolate the issue to FFmpeg’s command, build, or protocol support; it does not by itself establish that the key is wrong. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
