A low-power mini PC can encode and send a looping video to YouTube Live, but the workable settings depend on the exact processor, driver, and FFmpeg build. Check that hardware encoding is available, choose a YouTube-supported output profile, and test the full setup before leaving it unattended. FFmpeg and YouTube do not guarantee that a particular mini PC will stay live around the clock.
What you need to verify first
Before setting up a loop, confirm that the mini PC can encode your chosen output in hardware and that its internet connection can sustain the stream. A low-power label alone does not establish either capability.
- Hardware and software: Identify the processor, operating system, graphics driver, and FFmpeg version. If you intend to use Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), verify that the exact platform and installed FFmpeg build expose the encoder for your selected codec.
- Media: Inspect the video’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio. Decide whether to send it as-is or convert it to a YouTube-compatible profile.
- Network: Check that upload capacity can handle the complete stream bitrate, with extra margin for normal fluctuations.
- Operations: Decide how FFmpeg will keep running and how it will restart after an exit, network interruption, reboot, or power loss. These behaviors depend on your operating system and configuration.
FFmpeg’s QSV documentation says its QSV transcoding path requires both the decoder and encoder to support QSV and that no filters be used in that path. Scaling, overlays, or other filters can therefore change which parts of a pipeline are hardware-accelerated; confirm the actual pipeline rather than assuming it remains accelerated. Choose YouTube Live output settings
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate table for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted version of RTMP.

For scale, YouTube’s current table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of network capacity or evidence that your mini PC supports those codecs. YouTube recommends upload headroom of 20%; its streaming tips explain that stream bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and that connection disruptions can break a stream.
Confirm QSV support and the power trade-off
QSV is Intel’s Quick Sync Video acceleration path, not a promise that every Intel mini PC can encode every format. Check the encoders exposed by your installed FFmpeg build and test the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate on the actual machine. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes QSV encoders and the low_power option, which is intended to reduce power consumption and GPU usage. That stated intent is not a quantified saving or a guarantee for a particular device.

If the workflow requires filtering—such as scaling or adding overlays—verify the full encode path carefully. The QSV transcoding conditions documented by FFmpeg may not fit a pipeline that uses filters. Avoid assuming that decode, filtering, and encode all stay hardware-accelerated simply because a QSV encoder is available.
Set up the loop and make it persistent
The sources cited here do not prescribe one universal loop command or service configuration. FFmpeg options and operating-system service managers vary, so validate commands against your installed FFmpeg version and configure persistence for your specific OS.

- Inspect the source file. Record its codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format. Decide whether it can be sent as-is or needs conversion to the chosen YouTube profile.
- Verify the encoder. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build exposes the intended QSV encoder and that the processor, driver, and codec combination support it.
- Choose the output profile. Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, two-second keyframe interval, and audio format. Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected combination and leave the recommended upload headroom.
- Configure playback and ingest. Choose a looping method appropriate to your media and FFmpeg version, then send the output to YouTube using RTMPS where supported. Test playback at the intended settings before treating the setup as ready.
- Keep credentials private. Put the stream key in a secure configuration or secret store, not in a public command example, source repository, screenshot, or log.
- Run it under your OS’s persistence mechanism. Configure and test the system-specific service or supervisor so you know what happens when FFmpeg exits. Separately test network loss, reboot, and power interruption; do not assume a process restart alone restores the YouTube stream.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. A short test can reveal encoder errors, a bitrate mismatch, or a weak connection, but it cannot establish long-term uptime.
- Check that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, and audio.
- Watch the Live Control Room stream-health status and messages while testing.
- Confirm that actual upload capacity has room above the complete stream bitrate; YouTube recommends 20% headroom.
- Observe the mini PC during a representative run for thermal, driver, or resource problems.
- Test FFmpeg exit, network loss, reboot, and power interruption separately, and confirm the recovery behavior you configured.
No universal watchdog, restart policy, service manager, or power-backup configuration is specified by the cited YouTube and FFmpeg pages. Treat resilience as something to test on your own machine and connection, not an automatic consequence of using hardware encoding.

Protect and reset the YouTube stream key
YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains that the stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it through YouTube’s stream settings and update the value in your encoder configuration.
