To publish a Linux encoder feed to YouTube through a proxy, use the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it, and verify that the proxy can carry the required connection. With FFmpeg, proxy support depends on the installed build and protocol path; a generic proxy environment variable is not a guarantee that RTMPS traffic will be routed through it.
What you need before configuring the proxy
- A YouTube stream created or selected in Live Control Room, with its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s “password and address”; treat it as a credential and keep it out of shell history, logs, screenshots, and public scripts. YouTube stream settings.
- An encoder that supports the ingest protocol you intend to use, and an installed FFmpeg build whose protocol and proxy support you have checked.
- A proxy route permitted by your network administrator and capable of reaching the YouTube ingest endpoint and port shown or supported for your stream.
“Proxy” can mean an HTTP proxy, a SOCKS proxy, or a transparent system-level route. These are not interchangeable. An HTTP proxy that supports CONNECT can tunnel a TCP connection, but that does not prove that every encoder or FFmpeg protocol path will use it. FFmpeg documents proxy options for supported paths; verify the options available in your build and the protocol documentation before relying on them. FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Get the correct YouTube publishing URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you will use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into the encoder’s matching fields. Do not substitute a remembered ingest hostname or assume the ordinary RTMP URL and RTMPS URL are interchangeable.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL if the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and directs streamers to obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube stream settings.
- Keep the key private. If it may have been exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and replace the old key in the encoder.
Check FFmpeg’s protocol and proxy support
Before assembling a publishing command, inspect the installed executable and its local protocol help:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -protocols
ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp
FFmpeg documents RTMP, RTMPS, and tunneled RTMP variants, as well as an http_proxy option for relevant protocol handling. These documents do not guarantee that every build supports every combination of RTMPS and proxying. Check the help output and the documentation for your installed version. In particular, do not assume that setting HTTP_PROXY, or adding a generic proxy flag, will route an RTMPS publishing connection.

Ask whoever operates the proxy whether it supports the connection method your encoder requires, whether authentication is required, and whether the destination and port are allowed. If an HTTP proxy is involved, establish that CONNECT tunneling is permitted for the selected endpoint. Follow local network policy; a proxy will not bypass a denied destination or protocol.
Build a safe FFmpeg publishing command
A typical FFmpeg job has an input, any required encoding or stream-copy options, FLV output, and the publishing URL. The exact command depends on the input and the FFmpeg build. Use the URL copied from Live Control Room and insert the key locally; never publish a real key in documentation or share it in a terminal transcript.

ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f flv "<RTMPS_URL_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM>/<STREAM_KEY>"
This is a structural example, not a tested proxy command or a universal FFmpeg recipe. Replace the placeholder URL and key with the exact values for your stream, and consult ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp and your local FFmpeg documentation for the proxy option applicable to the protocol path you use. If you use stream copy or different codecs, ensure YouTube accepts the resulting format and settings. Avoid putting a real key directly into a command that will be retained in shell history; use a safer local method appropriate to your environment.
For an HTTP CONNECT proxy, configure the specific proxy option only as documented for your FFmpeg version and verify it applies to your RTMPS publishing path. SOCKS proxies and transparent system proxies use different mechanisms; the available documentation does not establish universal built-in SOCKS support for RTMPS publishing.

Choose encoder settings independently of proxy settings
Bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval affect encoding and stream stability, not whether traffic traverses a proxy. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table for the combination you plan to send rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube encoder settings.
- Use a bitrate that fits stable available upload capacity; a proxy cannot compensate for insufficient upstream bandwidth.
- Match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to your source and the intended stream.
- Use the recommended two-second keyframe interval, staying at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Use a supported audio codec and constant bitrate encoding.
Test the complete route before an event
- Start a private or unlisted test stream using the same Linux machine, FFmpeg build, proxy, URL type, and network route intended for the live event.
- Check that the proxy permits the required destination and port and that the encoder has not silently fallen back to a direct route.
- Open YouTube’s preview and read the stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing under conditions representative of the actual stream and monitoring health. YouTube encoder settings.
- Only after protocol and route checks pass should you adjust bitrate or resolution to address a YouTube health warning.
Troubleshoot in a useful order
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The stream is enabled, and the URL and key are the matching pair from Live Control Room. | Copy them again; if the key was exposed, regenerate it and update FFmpeg. |
| SSL or TLS error | The URL uses rtmps, the correct server was copied, and TLS certificate validation succeeds. |
YouTube advises verifying the protocol/server and trying port 443 where applicable. Use the Live Control Room URL and do not disable certificate checks. YouTube stream settings. |
| Direct publishing works but proxy publishing fails | Whether the proxy supports the required tunnel, authentication method, destination, and port; whether FFmpeg’s documented proxy option applies to the selected protocol path. | Test the proxy route independently and confirm its CONNECT behavior and network policy. Do not assume a generic environment variable routes RTMPS. |
| Certificate failure only on the proxy route | Whether the proxy intercepts TLS or substitutes certificates. | Prefer an end-to-end CONNECT tunnel and preserve certificate validation. TLS interception changes the security properties of the connection and may expose traffic to the proxy operator. |
| The feed connects but YouTube reports poor health | Stream-health messages, upload capacity, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval. | Test the route under representative conditions, then adjust encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations. |
| HLS is being considered after an RTMPS failure | Whether the encoder and stream are configured for YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements. | HLS is a separate ingest mode documented for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with its own URL and stream-key protocol selection. It is not an automatic fallback for a failed proxy tunnel. YouTube HLS ingestion. |
