If your YouTube stream goes offline when you change OBS scenes, first determine whether the playlist source stopped or OBS actually lost its broadcast connection. Record locally while reproducing the switch, then compare the recording and OBS Stats/log with the incoming-stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. A scene change can alter a source’s playback or visibility; it does not, by itself, prove why YouTube stopped receiving the stream.
First, separate a playlist interruption from a stream disconnect
OBS scenes determine which sources appear in the output. When a scene changes, a media or VLC playlist source may become active or hidden, and its playback can continue, pause, stop, restart, or briefly reload depending on its type and settings. That behavior can interrupt the video without taking the entire YouTube broadcast offline.
Check both sides at the time of the incident:
- In OBS: note whether the stream disconnects or reconnects, the bitrate falls, the dropped-frames counter rises, or an encoder/rendering error appears.
- In YouTube Live Control Room: note whether YouTube still reports incoming data or says it is no longer receiving the stream.
- In a local recording: check whether the scene switch produces a freeze, black video, missing audio, or an otherwise unhealthy output.
If only the playlist picture or sound is interrupted while OBS remains connected and YouTube continues receiving data, investigate the source and its scene-visibility behavior. If the local recording or encoder output also fails, focus first on the source, plugin, rendering workload, or encoding. If local output remains healthy but OBS or YouTube loses the connection, investigate the outbound path to YouTube.
Reproduce the scene change without risking a guess
- Start a local recording in OBS. Reproduce the same scene change that precedes the outage. Note the time and whether the recording itself freezes, goes black, or loses audio.
- Watch the stream indicators. During the switch, observe OBS’s connection state, bitrate and dropped-frame counter. Separately check YouTube Live Control Room for its incoming-stream status.
- Repeat with a minimal scene. Use a simple scene without the playlist, browser overlays, or third-party plugins. If that remains stable, add or enable the omitted elements individually while reproducing the switch.
- Change one source setting at a time. Keep the recording and notes from each test so you can connect a behavior change to a specific setting rather than making several changes at once.
This comparison narrows the cause; it cannot identify the cause of an unseen setup without its source properties and OBS log.

Check the playlist source’s scene behavior
For a VLC Video source
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists. Inspect Loop Playlist to see whether playback restarts after the playlist ends, and Visibility Behaviour to see what happens when the source is hidden. OBS documents the default visibility behavior as stopping while hidden and restarting when visible. If the playlist is meant to keep playing through scene changes, test the available visibility behavior that continues playback while hidden, then verify the result in a local recording.
For a regular Media Source
Inspect Restart playback when source becomes active and Close file when inactive. The latter unloads the media while the source is inactive and can cause a short delay when it appears again. Test whether changing either setting affects the interruption, one setting per test.

These settings describe source playback and loading. A playlist stopping or restarting is not evidence by itself that OBS stopped streaming.
Read OBS Stats and the log at the failure timestamp
Use the timestamp from your reproduction to inspect OBS Stats and the log around the scene switch. Look for output disconnects or reconnects, connection-related dropped frames, encoder errors, and rendering or encoding lag. Match those signs against what you saw in the local recording and YouTube Live Control Room.

- Connection-related dropped frames or a disconnect: OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance associates dropped frames with an unstable connection to the remote server or a connection unable to keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Follow the network branch below.
- Encoder errors or unhealthy local output: investigate the encoder, system load, and the source or plugin that changes with the scene.
- Rendering or encoding lag concentrated on the complex scene: compare against the minimal scene, then restore sources individually to identify what changes the result.
- No corresponding OBS output failure: check whether YouTube actually stopped receiving data before treating a playlist playback event as a broadcast disconnect.
OBS Project’s connection guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement is specifically about dropped frames; it does not mean OBS can never be involved in another kind of streaming failure.
If the encoder looks healthy, test the outbound connection
YouTube’s troubleshooting sequence is to check whether encoder output looks and sounds healthy, inspect encoder errors and CPU load, and then test the outbound internet connection. If the connection test identifies a problem, YouTube advises contacting your ISP. OBS also recommends checking network configuration and possible interference from a VPN or security software.

A general speed test does not establish that the route to YouTube’s ingest server is stable. When possible, compare network indicators during a reproduced incident. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder settings guidance; check the configured connection against YouTube’s current encoder instructions if you are reviewing the stream setup.
