How to Normalize Audio Levels Across Files Before a YouTube Playlist Stream

A practical FFmpeg two-pass workflow for matching perceived loudness across playlist files, with true-peak checks, transition listening and YouTube encoding guidance.

Use FFmpeg to measure every complete audio file, normalize each to the same integrated-loudness target and true-peak ceiling, then re-measure the rendered files and listen through the playlist transitions. This is more reliable than matching peak levels alone. YouTube’s upload guidance specifies audio formats and sample rates, but does not set a universal loudness target for a creator’s playlist.

What normalization can—and cannot—fix

Integrated loudness estimates perceived level across a complete file; a true-peak ceiling helps control peaks between digital samples. Matching files by sample peak alone can leave one track sounding much louder than another because their average loudness and dynamics differ.

Normalization makes playback levels more consistent, but it does not make the recordings’ dynamics identical. The target is a production choice for your material, not a YouTube-mandated playlist setting. FFmpeg’s loudnorm documentation describes the filter’s controls and behavior; EBU R 128, Version 4.0 provides loudness-normalization context, not a universal target for every YouTube playlist.

Prepare the files and choose a target

  1. Keep untouched originals. Work on copies so you can revise the processing without accumulating changes from repeated renders.
  2. Identify the intended audio stream. Some video files contain multiple audio tracks. Confirm which one belongs in the playlist before measuring or processing.
  3. Group the files by listening program. Decide which recordings should share a loudness target. Different material may have intentionally different dynamics; consistent perceived level does not require flattening expressive changes.
  4. Choose an integrated-loudness target and a maximum true-peak target. Use the same pair for all files in the group. Select values appropriate to your material and delivery; neither the cited YouTube encoding guidance nor the FFmpeg filter documentation makes one target correct for every playlist.

Analyze each complete file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter supports two-pass normalization for files. First analyze each entire file using the same target settings, then use that file’s reported measurements in its own normalization pass. Consult the current filter documentation for parameter names, accepted ranges, and output fields for your installed FFmpeg version.

Here, I is the integrated-loudness target, TP the true-peak ceiling and LRA the loudness-range target. The values shown are examples of filter parameters, not a recommended or YouTube-prescribed playlist standard. Replace them with the targets you chose, keep them consistent across the group, and retain the complete JSON measurements printed by FFmpeg for each file.

Measure from beginning to end rather than sampling a short section: the reported integrated loudness should represent the whole program. Record each file’s measured integrated loudness, loudness range, true peak and threshold. These measurements are specific to that input and must not be reused for a different file.

Normalize each file using its own measurements

Run the normalization pass separately for each file. Keep the shared targets unchanged, but insert that file’s own measured input values from its analysis output. The options and measurement fields for two-pass use are documented by FFmpeg.

For example, the command structure is:

ffmpeg -i input.wav -af loudnorm=I=-16:TP=-1.5:LRA=11:measured_I=MEASURED_I:measured_TP=MEASURED_TP:measured_LRA=MEASURED_LRA:measured_thresh=MEASURED_THRESH:offset=TARGET_OFFSET:linear=true:print_format=json output.wav

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Replace every uppercase placeholder with the corresponding numeric value from that input’s analysis report, including the measured threshold and target offset required by the filter’s documented workflow. Replace the illustrative targets with your chosen values. Do not copy placeholder words into a real command.

Requesting linear normalization does not guarantee gain-only processing. FFmpeg says it may fall back to dynamic normalization if the requested change cannot meet the target loudness-range or true-peak constraints. Check the filter’s reported mode and the rendered result instead of assuming every file received the same kind of processing.

Verify the renders and playlist transitions

  • Measure the output files again. Analyze the rendered files with the same settings and review their integrated loudness and true peak. If a result differs from your intention, inspect the filter output and revisit the target or processing choices.
  • Listen in playlist order. Pay particular attention to changes between quiet and loud recordings, the beginning and end of each file, and any gap or overlap introduced by the playback setup. Measurements cannot tell you whether a transition feels abrupt or whether a quiet passage is meant to stay quiet.
  • Check stereo phase and mono compatibility. Listen in mono as well as stereo when practical. YouTube warns that poor mono compatibility can reduce quality or mute audio when stereo is converted to mono; its guidance also recommends checking that channels are in phase. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for upload audio and video issues.

Package the audio for YouTube

YouTube does not accept an audio file alone as a video upload. Pair the audio with an image or other video using editing software, then encode the finished video. YouTube’s upload help states: “YouTube doesn’t have a tool to upload audio files, but you can try other video editing software.”

For audio in the uploaded video, YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings include AAC-LC or Opus, a 48 kHz sample rate, and stereo or supported multichannel configurations. Check the current page for its full recommendations and your intended channel layout. YouTube re-encodes uploaded videos, so judge the final upload as well as your local render.

Do not rely on YouTube playback leveling

YouTube’s Stable volume feature, where available, is a viewer-side playback control that balances loud and quiet playback. It is not a source-file analysis or normalization workflow. Prepare and check the files before building the playlist rather than relying on a viewer setting to make mismatched sources consistent.

Or let it run in the cloud

Once your normalized video is ready, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube stream of uploaded videos running from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
