AMD AMF can encode a live video feed using an AMD GPU, but it does not organize video files into a playlist or send a stream to YouTube by itself. To put a library on YouTube Live, use playback or playout software to assemble and play the files continuously, send that program to an encoder configured for AMF, then connect the encoder to YouTube’s live ingest. The exact application setup depends on the software you choose; AMD and YouTube’s official documentation does not provide a turnkey playlist-to-live recipe.
What AMF does—and what it does not do
AMD describes the Advanced Media Framework (AMF) SDK as providing access to AMD GPUs for multimedia processing, including video encoding, decoding, conversion, processing and scaling. AMF is an encoding framework for software developers and applications; it is not a video-library manager, playlist scheduler, streaming platform or complete broadcast workflow.
AMD currently lists AMF SDK v1.5.3 and says it requires AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 or newer. Those version details can change, so check the AMD GPUOpen AMF SDK page for current requirements. Support also depends on the particular GPU, operating system, driver, codec and application. Do not assume every AMD graphics card or encoder program exposes the same AMF options.
A prerecorded file encoded with AMF is still just a file. Encoding it does not make it a live stream; a playout application must play the library as a continuous program and provide that output to a live encoder.

Choose between live playout and uploading a finished video
If viewers need to watch a continuous channel on YouTube Live, use a playback or playout application to run the files in the order you choose, and send its output to a live encoder. If you only want to publish a finished recording for on-demand viewing, encode and upload a file instead. The requirements differ: YouTube’s upload guidance discusses MP4 and variable-bitrate file encoding, while live ingest calls for CBR and specific live-stream settings. Follow the appropriate guidance for the job:
- YouTube upload encoding settings for a finished file upload.
- YouTube live encoder settings for a live feed.
Build the library-to-live workflow
There is no universal AMF command or set of menus for this workflow in the official AMF and YouTube references. The steps below describe the roles your chosen applications must fill; consult their current documentation for exact connection methods and labels.

- Prepare the playlist. Choose the video files and their order in a playback or playout application. Confirm the application can keep playback continuous and output a program feed to an encoder. Check how it handles the end of the playlist, gaps between files, audio changes and missing media.
- Connect playback to an encoder. Use an encoder application that can accept the playout application’s output and exposes AMD AMF as an encoder option. The specific connection method and available controls are application-dependent; do not rely on a generic AMF command line.
- Select AMF and a compatible codec. In the encoder, select an AMF option if the application offers one, then choose a codec supported by that GPU, driver and application and accepted by YouTube. YouTube currently lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 for live encoders. Codec availability and output quality depend on the exact hardware and software combination; the official documentation cited here does not provide a comparative AMF speed, quality or file-size benchmark for this workflow.
- Configure the live output. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, keyframe interval and color settings to match YouTube’s current live requirements and the stream you can reliably deliver. The recommended settings are detailed below.
- Connect to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and a stream key, then enter them in the encoder as its destination and authentication details. YouTube ordinarily detects resolution and frame rate automatically; a custom stream key can be used to select settings manually. Treat the key like a password and never share it publicly. See YouTube’s guide to managing live stream settings.
- Test, then monitor. Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream before relying on the workflow. Check that the playlist advances as intended, audio and motion are present, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. During the live session, watch stream health and act on any messages in the Live Control Room.
Set encoder output for YouTube Live
Protocol and codec
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS. It accepts H.264, HEVC and AV1 for live encoding. Use a protocol and codec that both YouTube and your specific encoder application support; the fact that YouTube lists a codec does not guarantee that a particular AMD GPU, driver or application can encode it.
Bitrate and rate control
YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) for live ingest. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it. The table’s figures are published recommendations, not a benchmark of AMF performance or a guarantee that a particular network will be stable.

| Live video setting | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These figures are examples from YouTube’s live encoder table; YouTube does not state a publication year for that table, and it can change. Check the current live encoder settings for your exact codec and output format before configuring the stream. YouTube also advises testing the internet connection’s upload speed and sending a representative test stream.
Frame rate, keyframes and color
- Frame rate: YouTube’s live guidance supports up to 60 fps. Set the output to a rate your source material, encoder and stable upload connection can sustain.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder expresses the setting in seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- SDR: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit output for SDR.
- HDR: YouTube’s HDR guidance recommends H.265 and 10-bit output. Do not assume HDR is available just because YouTube supports it: verify the exact GPU, driver, encoder application and playout chain support the required format.
Test the entire chain before going live
A successful AMF encode alone does not prove that the playlist, audio, network and YouTube ingest will all work together. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance recommends a test that includes audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Follow the YouTube live encoder settings guidance.

- Play representative files from the library, including content with the most demanding motion or audio transitions.
- Confirm the playlist starts, advances and repeats or ends as intended in your playout application.
- Check that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and audio, and that its Live Control Room reports stream health.
- Test using the same encoder, network connection and settings planned for the live session.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it through YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder does not offer AMF | GPU, driver, operating system or application support | Check the application’s current AMF requirements and confirm the installed AMD driver and GPU are supported. AMD’s current AMF page lists its SDK and driver requirements. |
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Destination URL, stream key or ingest connection | Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder against YouTube’s Live Control Room. Keep the key private; replace it if exposed. |
| The stream is unstable or drops frames | Bitrate, upload capacity or encoder load | Match CBR bitrate to the codec, resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current table. Test the connection and lower output demands if the available upload cannot sustain the setting. |
| Resolution or frame rate is unexpected | Playout output, encoder output or YouTube detection | Check the output mode in both playback and encoder applications. YouTube ordinarily detects resolution and frame rate; if needed, use a custom stream key to select settings manually. |
| Video plays but audio is missing or changes abruptly | Source files, playlist transitions or playout audio routing | Test representative files and transitions, then inspect the audio path through the playout application and encoder before starting the public stream. |
| Playlist stops or leaves a gap | Playout behavior rather than AMF encoding | Check the playback application’s handling of end-of-list behavior, missing files and transitions. AMF encodes the feed it receives; it does not schedule the library. |
