Find the first place the picture turns green: the original video, OBS, or YouTube’s player. That distinction determines what to test. If the file is clean but OBS is green, compare Media Source decoding settings; if only YouTube playback is affected, use YouTube’s browser and graphics troubleshooting steps. There is no single documented fix for every green-frame fault.
Locate where the green frames begin
Before changing settings, play the original video outside OBS. Then compare it with the OBS preview and, if practical, a local OBS recording. Finally, check the YouTube stream. Note the earliest stage where the corruption appears: that narrows the likely part of the playback chain to investigate. This is a diagnostic approach based on OBS and YouTube guidance, not a guarantee that any one stage is responsible.
- Green in the original file: investigate the file or the player/decoder used to play it.
- Original is clean, but OBS preview or local recording is green: focus on the OBS source and its decoding or rendering path.
- OBS output is clean, but YouTube playback is green: troubleshoot the YouTube player and the viewer’s browser or graphics setup.
Keep a short record of your operating system, GPU and driver, OBS version, file container and codec, whether the video is HDR, and whether the fault is continuous or intermittent. These details help distinguish otherwise similar symptoms.
Test OBS Media Source settings
If the source is an OBS Media Source and the original file plays correctly, compare its decoding settings. OBS documents support for containers including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm. Container support alone does not establish that every codec or file will decode correctly on every system.

- In OBS, select the Media Source in the Sources list and open its properties.
- Find Use hardware decoding when available. OBS documents this option as off by default. If it is on, test with it off; if it is off, test with it on.
- Change only that setting, replay the same section, and compare the OBS preview or local recording. Restore the original setting before testing another option if you need a clear A/B comparison.
- Check the source’s YUV color-range setting and compare its available choices one at a time. A range mismatch is a possibility to investigate, not an established cause of green frames.
OBS documents these controls but does not claim that toggling hardware decoding or changing YUV range will cure this particular fault. If neither changes the result, preserve the evidence you gathered and investigate the specific file codec, GPU/driver, and OBS version rather than repeatedly changing unrelated options. If you are using VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC as well. This dependency applies to the VLC Video source; it is not a general requirement for OBS’s ordinary Media Source. Check that the matching VLC installation is present before treating a VLC Video playback problem as an OBS Media Source issue. Details are in the OBS Media Sources documentation.

If green appears only in YouTube playback
When the original file and OBS output look correct but YouTube’s player is green, follow YouTube’s viewer-side steps rather than changing the OBS source first:
- Try playing the video in a different browser.
- In Chrome, turn off browser hardware acceleration. YouTube’s listed steps are for Chrome; consult the browser’s own help for equivalent settings in other browsers.
- Update the graphics driver. YouTube directs PC users to their computer manufacturer’s driver site.

Check HDR only if you intended to stream HDR
Do not apply HDR settings as a general green-frame fix. They are relevant only if you intentionally configured an HDR stream and the source and system support that configuration. YouTube documents HDR streaming with HEVC. Its OBS instructions specify a hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, HDR enabled, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Verify that the encoder and source are configured for the intended HDR workflow before changing these options; an arbitrary change to HDR settings is not a general repair for SDR video.

Look at performance symptoms separately
If green frames occur alongside stuttering, dropped frames, or an encoding-overload warning, check OBS performance indicators and logs. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance treats overload as a workload issue and includes reducing frame rate among possible adjustments. The guidance does not establish workload as the cause of green frames, so use performance checks to address accompanying symptoms rather than assuming they explain the color corruption.

Make each test useful
Change one variable per trial and replay the same portion of the video. Compare the earliest stage that shows corruption, whether toggling OBS hardware decoding changes it, whether another browser or playback device changes YouTube’s result, and whether the stream is SDR or intentionally HDR. If the fault persists, share the OS, GPU and driver, OBS version, container and codec, HDR status, and the point in the chain where green first appears when seeking technical help.
