You can use an MKV recording in a YouTube Live event only if your encoder can read its video and audio tracks. YouTube’s live workflow sends an encoder feed to an event; it does not establish that every MKV can be used directly or that an MKV can be submitted as the event itself. Inspect the file, test it in your encoder, and convert a copy only if compatibility requires it.
Choose between a live event and a regular upload
If viewers should watch at a scheduled time on a live-event page, with live-event behavior, use YouTube Live Control Room and send the recording through an encoder. If viewers can watch whenever they choose, upload the recording as an ordinary video instead. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding specifies MP4 as the container, but that recommendation concerns regular uploads; it is not a universal rule that an encoder’s source file must be MP4. YouTube’s encoder workflow and upload encoding guidance address different processes.
Check the MKV before preparing it
- Inspect the tracks. Identify the video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio tracks. Confirm that the encoder you plan to use can read both the MKV container and those codecs.
- Test the actual file. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee direct MKV compatibility, and compatibility depends on the encoder and the file’s tracks. Check playback and audio in the encoder before scheduling around it.
- Keep the original safe. If you need to change the file, make a copy first. That preserves the recording if a conversion changes quality or causes a problem.
Remux or transcode only when needed
If the encoder rejects the file, first determine whether the problem is only the container or whether a codec or another property is unsupported. A remux changes the container without re-encoding the tracks; it may be enough when the tracks are already compatible. A transcode changes one or more tracks and takes longer, with possible quality loss. The right choice depends on the recording and encoder. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe an MKV conversion command or guarantee that remuxing will work.
For a normal on-demand upload, MP4 is YouTube’s recommended container. For a live event, prepare a file or playback path accepted by your encoder, then confirm the resulting feed in the event preview rather than assuming that an MP4 container alone resolves every compatibility issue.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up and start the pre-recorded live event
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; its eligibility guidance states a minimum age of 16 to live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. This creates the live event; the recording still needs to be sent to it through an encoder.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Choose compatible output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the specific output you intend to send, and choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Play the prepared recording through the encoder. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed, then check the preview and stream-health messages before starting the event.
- Start the event and monitor it. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the event, monitoring stream health, and checking that any local archive file is growing during the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Optional: attach a trailer
If you want to promote the scheduled event, upload a trailer as a regular video and attach it to the stream using YouTube’s live-event options. The trailer is separate from the encoder feed and does not replace the recording being played during the event. See YouTube’s guidance on trailers for live streams.
Archives, copyright, and channel policies
Automatic archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a substitute for keeping and checking a local copy: YouTube also advises verifying local archive files during the event.

Copyright and reused material
Use only footage, music, and other material you have rights to stream. A recording that plays correctly can still receive a copyright claim or be subject to YouTube’s policies. Repeatedly broadcasting material does not by itself establish that you have permission or that the channel complies with monetization rules. Check the rights and applicable YouTube policies before scheduling.
Troubleshoot common preparation problems
- The encoder will not open the MKV: check the container and track codecs against the encoder’s supported formats. Try a remux only if the tracks themselves are supported; otherwise, transcode a copy to compatible settings.
- The encoder opens the file but YouTube shows no preview: verify the event’s stream URL and key, ensure the encoder is actively sending, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Do not publish until the preview appears as expected.
- Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong: confirm that the intended audio track is selected and that the encoder output uses an accepted audio format, such as AAC or MP3. Check the preview with sound before starting.
- The stream is unstable: review the encoder’s bitrate and output settings against YouTube’s table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and ensure the connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Test with comparable motion and audio before the event.
- The local recording is not being saved properly: verify that the local archive file is growing while the event runs, as YouTube advises. Keep the original recording until the archive is checked.
