You can’t use SFTP to send a live YouTube stream. YouTube documents SFTP as an asset-delivery option for partners who regularly deliver more than 100 assets a month—not as live-stream ingest. To broadcast a pre-recorded video, send it from a Mac encoder to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
Why SFTP won’t start a YouTube live stream
SFTP transfers media files and metadata to YouTube’s partner delivery system. A live broadcast instead requires an encoder feed connected to YouTube’s Live Control Room. The two workflows serve different purposes: transferring an asset does not make it appear as a live event.
YouTube describes SFTP or Aspera delivery for partners that regularly deliver more than 100 assets per month. Partner eligibility and onboarding are required; this is not a general upload route for ordinary channels. See YouTube’s partner delivery guidance.
What you need to stream a recorded file from a Mac
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream.
- A Mac with an encoder that can send a local video file as a live feed.
- The YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A reliable internet connection with upload capacity for the stream bitrate, plus headroom.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to connect an encoder to a live event, but the file playback controls vary by encoder. Consult the current documentation for the Mac encoder you choose for loading a file, enabling repeat, and controlling playback.

Set up the YouTube live event
- Check channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details. Get the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings. Use an RTMPS URL or preset if the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP sent over TLS/SSL; the stream key authorizes publishing to your channel, so keep it private.
Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the Live Control Room controls and connection details.
Configure the Mac encoder and send the recording
- Choose the encoder’s file-playback feature. Load the recording as a media-file source using that encoder’s own instructions. Do not assume a webcam capture source or a generic “upload” button will send a file as a live feed.
- Set playback behavior. Configure whether the file plays once or repeats, and check how the encoder handles audio, the end of the file, and stopping the broadcast. These controls differ by application; no universal macOS menu path applies.
- Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Paste them into the encoder’s streaming destination settings. Avoid sharing screenshots or logs that expose the key.
- Start early and verify the preview. YouTube recommends preparing an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Confirm the expected video and audio appear in Live Control Room, then check the watch page and stream health before relying on the broadcast.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom rather than running the connection at its full capacity. See its live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance.
- End the event deliberately. Stop the stream through the encoder and Live Control Room as required by your setup. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours.

Common problems and fixes
- No live preview: Check that the event is open, the encoder is running, and the stream URL and key match the event. Re-copy the key from Live Control Room if needed.
- Invalid or exposed stream key: Treat the key as a password. Replace or reset it in YouTube Studio if it was shared publicly, then update the encoder.
- Video plays locally but not on YouTube: Confirm the encoder is sending the file source, not only displaying it in its local preview. Check the encoder documentation for supported formats and playback setup.
- Stream stutters or drops: Check upload stability and reduce competition for bandwidth. Preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and monitor stream health.
- File stops before the event ends: Verify the encoder’s repeat and end-of-file behavior. A file playing once does not automatically create a continuous broadcast.
- Channel cannot go live: Verify the channel and check for restrictions. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A file being pre-recorded does not exempt it from YouTube’s copyright or channel policies. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights to the video and audio, and that the stream complies with YouTube’s policies. Repeating material does not itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization; review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content.
