How to Choose a Frame Rate for Mixed-Source Videos in an OBS Playlist

Set OBS output FPS for the destination and desired motion—not for each playlist clip. Learn how to choose 30 or 60 fps, handle fractional rates, and test mixed-rate videos.

Set one output frame rate in OBS for the stream or recording you want to deliver; do not try to make a single OBS output run at several frame rates at once. Choose it for the destination and the motion you need, then record a short sample with representative playlist clips to check motion and stability.

Choose the output rate for the finished video

In OBS, the Common FPS Value setting controls the cadence of the output. OBS’s overview guide says it should match your desired output FPS, giving 30 and 60 as examples: OBS Studio overview. Start by checking the destination’s current delivery requirements. If you are recording for later editing, consider the downstream project’s expected frame rate as well.

Mixed source rates do not mean you should change output FPS for each playlist item. Pick one output rate for the stream or recording, and assess how the different clips look when played within that output.

Decide between 30 and 60 fps

30 fps for a lighter workload

For talking, slides, and many general-purpose streams, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point. It asks OBS to render and encode fewer frames than 60 fps, which can help when performance is constrained. This is a practical recommendation, not an OBS requirement.

60 fps when smoother motion matters

Choose 60 fps when the content’s motion benefits from it and your full workflow can sustain it. OBS warns that 60-fps streaming can be more taxing than 30-fps streaming. Its performance guide specifically recommends dropping from 60 to 30 if 60 is not working: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.

Assess candidates against four things: destination requirements, smoothness for the most motion-heavy clip, how the source cadence looks at the chosen output rate, and OBS’s rendering and encoding stability on your system. If OBS struggles, try lowering FPS, simplifying the scene, or reducing output resolution before assuming new hardware is necessary.

Keep integer and fractional rates distinct

Rates such as 24, 25, 30, and 60 fps are not identical to 23.976, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. In OBS’s Windows DirectShow rate list, fractional rates include 30000/1001 (about 29.97) and 60000/1001 (about 59.94): OBS DirectShow rate labels. If the source or delivery specification calls for fractional timing, choose the corresponding fractional rate if it is available in your setup. Supported choices can vary by OBS version, operating system, capture driver, and destination.

For Apple-device HLS authoring, Apple lists common integer and fractional rates and recommends that inserted media be at a similar rate—x, 2x, or x/2—to the other content in that Media Playlist. This is specific to Apple’s HLS guidance, not a universal rule for OBS playlists: Apple HLS authoring specification.

Test mixed-rate clips in a short recording

OBS sources may attempt to synchronize to the output rate, but the exact frame dropping, duplication, or interpolation behavior is not documented for every media file and playlist combination. An OBS developer discussion describes synchronization intent for some sources, including Media Source and Video Capture Device, without establishing a universal conversion pattern: OBS forum discussion of video-source FPS. Check the result on your own system rather than assuming every clip will convert invisibly.

  1. Choose the intended output FPS. Set the target rate in OBS’s Video settings for the recording or stream, based on destination requirements and motion needs.
  2. Build a representative sample. Include the lowest-rate and highest-rate playlist clips, a clip from a different integer or fractional rate family if present, and transitions between clips.
  3. Record and inspect. Look for judder or repeated frames during motion, audio sync problems, and whether the output remains stable. This is a local check, not a guarantee about every file.
  4. Adjust if needed. If the output is unstable, try 30 instead of 60 fps, simplify the scene, or reduce resolution; then make another short recording.

Do not confuse capture FPS with output FPS

A capture device’s FPS is an input setting; the device may not support every rate offered in a menu. That setting is separate from the output cadence chosen in OBS’s video settings. Check the device’s supported rates in its properties and match the input to the available device modes and your capture needs. OBS’s overview covers video and output settings: OBS Studio overview.
