For OBS Studio, a sensible free place to start is Cockos’ ReaPlugs suite: OBS lists it among the plugins used while developing and testing VST support, and Cockos offers it as a free download. That is compatibility evidence, not proof it is the best-sounding option or that every plugin in the package works on every system. Before installing anything, check the plugin format: OBS’s documented VST filter supports many VST 2.x plugins, not VST 3.x.
What makes a VST plugin suitable for livestreaming?
The right plugin depends on the problem you want to solve, the audio host you use, and whether the plugin build matches your operating system and host architecture. A livestreaming plugin can shape tone or dynamics, control unwanted sound, or reduce noise; those are different tasks, so there is no universal winner.

- Processing task: Choose an effect that addresses a specific issue, such as EQ, compression, gating, or noise reduction. Verify the package’s current documentation for its actual effects rather than assuming a collection includes every tool.
- Platform and build: Check the plugin’s current OS and architecture compatibility against your OBS version. OBS documents different plugin file types and search locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Stability and CPU: OBS warns that it has not tested every plugin, that some may crash, and that plugins can use significant CPU. Try unfamiliar effects in a test recording or private stream before relying on them live.
The available evidence does not establish comparative sound quality, latency, or CPU benchmarks across a broad set of paid and free plugins, so recommendations below are starting points rather than measured rankings.

OBS names the free REAPER ReaPlugs VFX suite among the plugins used in developing and testing its VST support. Cockos describes ReaPlugs as REAPER FX plugins for use in another host and offers it free. This makes it a practical first package to check for an OBS setup, but it is not a comparative endorsement and does not guarantee every component will work on your current system. Cockos’ download page lists VST v2.36 packages in 32-bit and 64-bit versions, dated January 2, 2016. Because those listed packages are old, check the download page and your host/OS compatibility before installing; do not assume the listed build is suitable for every current setup.
Melda Production: another compatibility lead, not a blanket recommendation
OBS also names Melda Production among plugins used while developing and testing VST support. That provides a reason to check a specific Melda plugin’s format and system requirements, not evidence that every product in its collection is supported, free, or preferable to ReaPlugs. OBS’s built-in Noise Suppression for mild noise
If the problem is mild room or white noise rather than a need for a specific VST effect, start with OBS’s built-in Noise Suppression filter. OBS offers RNNoise and Speex: its documentation describes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive, while strong Speex suppression can distort the voice. Apply only enough suppression to improve intelligibility; listen for voice damage as well as reduced background noise. OBS: Noise Suppression Filter
Install and add a VST 2.x filter in OBS
- Check the plugin format and build. Confirm it is a supported VST 2.x plugin for your operating system and OBS architecture. OBS documents Windows
.dll, macOS.vst, and Linux.soor.ofiles. Its documentation also gives default search locations; on Linux, settingVST_PATHreplaces OBS’s other search locations, so include the paths you need in that variable. Consult the OBS VST filter documentation for the platform-specific paths: VST 2.x Plugin Filter. - Install the plugin. Use the vendor’s installer or instructions and ensure the supported plugin file is in a location OBS searches. If you use a custom directory, follow the plugin and OBS documentation for your platform.
- Open the relevant audio source’s filters. In OBS Studio, locate the audio source you want to process in the Audio Mixer, open its filters, and add a VST 2.x Plugin filter. Select the installed supported plugin from that filter.
- Configure one change at a time. Adjust the plugin for the source and listen through headphones or a test recording. Save or record your settings before experimenting so you can restore a known-good setup.
- Test before going live. Record a short sample or use a private stream, listen for distortion, dropouts, excessive noise processing, and CPU spikes, and confirm the correct microphone or source is being filtered.
When built-in or NVIDIA noise processing is a better fit
For mild background noise, OBS Noise Suppression may be simpler than installing a VST. Compare RNNoise and Speex at your actual CPU load and speaking level; more aggressive suppression is not automatically better if it makes speech sound unnatural. NVIDIA Broadcast is a separate virtual-device workflow, not a prerequisite for VST plugins. NVIDIA’s setup guide dated September 17, 2020 describes selecting the Broadcast virtual microphone in the streaming application and cautions against duplicate noise-removal processing. That guide lists a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher and Windows 10 64-bit among its requirements; those are dated guide requirements, not a reliable statement of current minimums. Troubleshoot plugins that do not appear or behave badly
- The plugin is missing from OBS: Verify that it is VST 2.x rather than VST 3.x, that its file type and architecture match the system, and that it is installed in a documented search location. On Linux, inspect
VST_PATH; setting it replaces OBS’s other search locations. - OBS crashes or becomes unstable: Remove or disable the newest plugin filter and reopen OBS. Since OBS warns that some plugins can crash and it has not tested every plugin, add effects one at a time and test them before a live session.
- Audio crackles or CPU use rises: Disable filters individually to find the cause, then compare CPU load with and without the plugin. OBS specifically recommends monitoring CPU usage; avoid stacking redundant processing.
- Your voice sounds distorted after noise reduction: Reduce the suppression strength or compare another mode. OBS cautions that strong Speex suppression can distort voice; also check that you are not applying noise removal both in OBS and in a separate virtual-microphone workflow.
- The plugin works in another application but not OBS: That does not establish OBS compatibility. Check the plugin’s format, version, architecture, installation path, and host documentation; OBS’s filter supports many, not all, VST 2.x plugins.
