Check OBS’s performance and dropped-frame indicators before changing settings: rising encoding or rendering lag points to a local workload problem, while rising network-dropped frames points to an unstable connection to the streaming server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. A viewer’s report of buffering alone does not tell you which problem you have.
What the OBS symptoms mean
Encoding lag: OBS cannot encode fast enough
Encoding lag means OBS is falling behind on the configured encoding workload. Check local system capacity and output settings. OBS also needs GPU resources to composite scenes, so an overloaded GPU can affect overall OBS performance. See OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.
Rendering lag: OBS cannot prepare frames in time
Rendering lag is a separate local symptom: OBS cannot render or composite frames quickly enough. A heavily loaded GPU may leave too little capacity for OBS, but rendering lag should not automatically be called encoder overload.
Network dropped frames: the connection to the server is unstable
Network dropped frames mean OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote streaming server at the selected bitrate. Enough drops can disconnect the stream. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes the issue as an unstable server connection or an inability to keep up with the set bitrate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Viewer buffering: not necessarily a broadcaster-side fault
Viewers may buffer even when OBS shows no network drops. Their location, connection, device, or playback conditions may be responsible. Check the OBS counters before treating a viewer complaint as proof of a streaming connection problem; OBS covers this distinction in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.
Diagnose the problem while streaming
- Open OBS Stats and watch the counters. During the affected stream, note whether encoding lag, rendering lag, or network dropped frames are increasing. Also watch the dropped-frame counter in the main OBS window. Exact Stats-window labels can vary by OBS version.
- Save the log for the affected session. Keep the OBS log so you can review the session after the stream. Record the counters before making a change; check them again afterward.
- Change one relevant factor at a time. If you change bitrate, scene complexity, and encoder together, you will not know which change affected the symptom. Compare the same counters after each test.
- Check whether the issue is destination-specific. If practical, test another streaming service. If the issue appears only with one destination, that helps isolate the route or service; it does not by itself identify the exact fault.
If network dropped frames are increasing
Test a lower bitrate against stable upload capacity
OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate to a level supported by stable upload speed. Its guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a universal YouTube rule or confirmation of YouTube’s current limits. Lowering bitrate can reduce video quality.

Remove connection variables
- Try a wired connection. OBS recommends Ethernet because Wi-Fi can be unstable; a cable tests the connection type but does not prove the ISP, router, or server route is healthy.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization utility is affecting the connection.
- Check network drivers and network hardware; do not replace hardware unless a specific fault has been identified.
- Where available, try a different server and compare results.
If the problem persists and you are unsure whether hardware needs replacement, OBS advises contacting your internet service provider. Avoid assuming that a bitrate change or a new cable alone establishes the cause.
If encoding or rendering lag is increasing
Reduce the work competing with OBS
- Close other GPU-heavy programs.
- If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and reduce demanding in-game settings.
- Simplify scenes and review expensive sources, browser sources, and filters.
Adjust output demands only if needed
Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system still cannot keep up. OBS notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance; 30 fps is an option when 60 fps is unstable. These changes can affect the stream’s image detail or motion smoothness.

Choose an encoder with the workload in mind
Modern hardware encoders generally move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component with low performance impact. Older hardware generations may trade image quality for lower load, and the available encoders and results depend on the system. Changing to a hardware encoder does not fix network dropped frames. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide.
When viewers buffer but OBS counters look healthy
Do not lower bitrate or reduce game settings solely because one viewer reports buffering. Ask whether the problem affects multiple viewers and whether they are using different networks or devices. Playback can vary by viewer location, connection, device, and platform transcoding even when the broadcaster’s dropped-frame counter is not rising.
