To start VTubing, choose an avatar format, pair it with compatible tracking software, build a scene in streaming software such as OBS, and connect that scene to YouTube or Twitch. A webcam is optional: VTube Studio supports webcam and phone tracking for Live2D Cubism models, and it can also animate mouth movement from microphone audio. Before going live, test your tracking, audio, scene changes, platform eligibility, and the rights for your model and other content.
1. Choose an avatar you can use
Start with the kind of character you want on screen, then choose a model format and an application that supports it. This guide covers the 2D Live2D route using VTube Studio; it does not compare every 3D or PNG-avatar application.
For a 2D model: Live2D Cubism
VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism models and does not support VRoid files. You can make a Cubism model yourself or commission an artist to illustrate and rig one. If you commission a model, agree in writing on the uses you need, such as livestreaming, monetized videos, merchandise, and edits. Permission to use tracking software does not grant rights to the character art.
Before you spend
- Check that your chosen tracking application accepts your model format.
- Use an existing phone for tracking if it suits your setup; a webcam is another option, not a universal requirement.
- Buy a microphone only if your setup needs one. VTube Studio’s audio-based lip sync requires a microphone, but webcam and phone tracking are separate options.
- Confirm model, software, music, and other asset licenses for your intended use, especially if you plan to monetize.
No particular commission marketplace, commission price, computer specification, or hardware performance is established here. Costs vary, so avoid buying equipment before you know what your chosen workflow requires.

2. Set up VTube Studio and tracking
VTube Studio’s Steam listing describes the app as free, with an optional watermark-removal DLC for webcam tracking. Its mobile apps have free and PRO feature tiers. Check the current listing and license before relying on a feature or commercial-use permission.
- Install the version for your device. VTube Studio lists webcam tracking for Windows and Mac and also supports iOS and Android tracking.
- Import your Live2D Cubism model. Complete the application’s model setup, then start tracking and check that the avatar responds as expected.
- Choose an input. Use a compatible webcam or phone tracking. If you use audio-based lip sync, connect and select a microphone.
- Improve tracking conditions. Use good, non-colored lighting. When sending tracking data from a phone to a computer, VTube Studio’s FAQ recommends Streaming Mode; it also advises turning off the model and camera preview and lowering screen brightness to reduce device load and heat.
- Check how the avatar appears in your stream software. VTube Studio says it works with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software. Confirm the avatar is visible in the scene you intend to broadcast.
3. Build and test your streaming scene
In OBS, Streamlabs, or your selected streaming software, create a scene that combines the avatar output, game or other content, audio sources, and any overlays you need. Keep software controls and private menus out of the captured scene. This scene setup is a practical workflow based on VTube Studio’s documented compatibility, not a claim of a hands-on test.

Test before going public
- Check that the avatar is framed correctly and continues responding when you move.
- Listen for clear microphone audio and make sure game or desktop audio is at a usable level.
- Switch between the scenes you expect to use and confirm each one shows the right sources.
- Check what viewers can see if you open settings, notifications, or other private windows.
- Use a private or otherwise non-public check before a public broadcast, where the platform and your setup allow it.
4. Connect the stream to a platform
Connect your streaming software to the platform you plan to use, then configure the broadcast in that platform’s current control room. YouTube documents encoder streaming and supports horizontal and vertical live formats. Its Live Control Room can create both formats together: the vertical stream is center-cropped by default, both formats share chat, and you cannot add the vertical stream after the broadcast has started. Check the framing before you go live if you choose both formats.
YouTube eligibility
YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old to livestream. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms. Check the current rules in YouTube Help and your account’s live-streaming controls before scheduling a broadcast.

Twitch eligibility and monetization
Twitch announced revised Affiliate qualification milestones for early June 2026: at least 4 hours streamed, on 4 different days; at least 3 average concurrent viewers on each of 4 different days; and at least 25 followers. These are eligibility criteria, not an earnings forecast. Twitch distinguishes access to monetization tools from eligibility for payout; its announcement says streamers must earn Affiliate or Partner status to receive a payout. The rollout began in the US and was expected to expand globally later in 2026, so check your Creator Dashboard for availability in your region.

Review the terms for each part of your stream separately: the tracking app, avatar art and rig, game or other displayed material, music, and any overlays. A license for one does not cover the others.

VTube Studio’s commercial-use terms conflict
VTube Studio’s FAQ says private individuals and streamers may use the app commercially, including for monetized YouTube or Twitch streams, without buying PRO or DLC, with larger companies directed to licensing. However, its current Steam EULA says personal commercial use, including superchats and monetized YouTube, requires at least one paid iOS or Android version or paid DLC. Because these published statements conflict, check the current EULA and ask DenchiSoft for guidance before monetizing if the license affects your situation. The EULA also describes company and agency licensing thresholds; those terms are not legal advice.
Live2D Cubism terms
Live2D’s 2019 help article gives separate guidance for ordinary users and businesses by revenue and edition, but it is older than current agreements. Do not treat it as overriding current Live2D terms; check the agreement that applies to your use.

Music and reused material
Check that you have permission to broadcast every song, image, video, and other asset in the stream, including material supplied with a model or overlay. Platform eligibility does not grant those rights. Do not assume that crediting an artist or owning a copy of a song is permission to livestream it.
6. If you want the channel to stay live when you are away
VTuber avatar tracking is for live, camera- or phone-driven performance. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos while you are away, that is a different workflow from a camera-based VTuber broadcast.
