1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConnect a USB microphone directly to your PC. For an XLR microphone, connect it with a balanced XLR cable to an audio interface or mixer’s microphone input; connect the interface to the PC if you want to record or use the mic there. Then select the right input in your app, set gain while monitoring the meter, and enable phantom power only if the microphone manual calls for it.
Choose the connection that matches your microphone
| Microphone and destination | What to connect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USB mic to PC | Connect the microphone to a suitable computer USB port using its cable. | Select the microphone as the input in your recording, chat, or streaming application. Check its manual for device-specific setup. |
| XLR mic to PC through an interface | Connect the mic to the interface’s XLR microphone input with a balanced XLR cable; connect the interface to the computer, commonly over USB. | Confirm the interface has the necessary mic input and features, including phantom power if your microphone requires it. |
| XLR mic to mixer | Connect the mic to a mixer’s balanced microphone input using a balanced XLR cable. | For computer use, consult the mixer manual for its output and routing options; these vary by model. |
| Hybrid USB/XLR mic | Use USB for a direct computer connection, or use its XLR output with a mixer or interface. | Follow the microphone manual for each connection. For example, Shure’s MV7 guide documents both paths and says phantom power is not required for its XLR connection. |
Shure documents direct USB computer use for the MV7 and recommends an interface with an XLR microphone input to connect an XLR mic to a computer. A professional mic plugged directly into a computer sound-card mic input may be too quiet because that input expects a hotter signal. Use an interface or a microphone with built-in USB instead. Connect an XLR microphone to a PC through an interface
- Check the mic and interface. Verify that the microphone has an XLR output and that the interface has an XLR microphone input. Confirm how the interface connects to your computer and that your computer and app can use it.
- Connect the microphone. With the equipment powered down or muted where practical, connect the mic to the interface’s XLR mic input using a balanced XLR cable. Do not substitute a line or instrument input for a microphone input unless the interface manual specifically supports that connection.
- Connect the interface to the computer. Use the connection and setup instructions for the exact interface. For example, Focusrite documents a USB connection for the cited Scarlett Solo setup. Focusrite Scarlett Solo
- Check phantom power before switching it on. Read the microphone manual. Shure says condenser microphones require phantom power and that its PGA27 performs best at 48 V; its MV7 guide says phantom power is not required for that mic’s XLR output. Requirements are model-specific. Shure PGA27 guide · Shure MV7 guide
- Select the interface as your input. Choose the interface or its relevant channel in the recording or calling application. The exact menu path depends on the application and operating system; verify the selection in that software’s current instructions.
- Set gain while monitoring. Speak or perform at the level you expect to record, raise the interface’s preamp gain, and watch its signal indicator or meter. Keep the signal out of clipping. The appropriate recording level depends on your workflow; the cited guidance does not prescribe one universal target.
Connect an XLR microphone to a mixer
- Connect the microphone to a mixer input labeled for microphones using a balanced XLR cable.
- Check the mic manual and mixer instructions before enabling phantom power. The mixer supplies phantom power to the mic over the balanced microphone connection when required; do not assume every microphone needs it.
- Set the channel gain while speaking or performing and monitor the mixer’s meter or signal indicator to avoid clipping.
- If you also need the sound on a PC, use the mixer’s documented computer connection and routing. Mixer outputs and computer paths differ by model, so follow that mixer’s manual rather than assuming any particular output or cable will work.

Match the connector and signal level
Use the input type specified for the source: an XLR mic connection belongs in a microphone input, while line-level or instrument sources may require a different jack and setting. Focusrite distinguishes XLR microphone connections from 1/4-inch line or instrument connections on the cited interface. It warns that sending line-level equipment into an XLR mic input can overload the preamp; phantom power enabled in that misuse case may damage equipment. Check the exact interface labels and manual before connecting or enabling phantom power. Focusrite: line and instrument level

Troubleshoot a microphone with no signal or poor level
- No input signal: Check that the cable is fully connected, the mic is plugged into the intended channel, and the recording or calling app has the correct input selected.
- XLR mic is very quiet: Confirm it is connected to a microphone input on an interface or mixer, not directly to a computer sound-card input that may expect a hotter signal. Raise preamp gain while monitoring, without letting the meter clip.
- Condenser mic has no usable signal: Check the microphone manual to determine whether phantom power is required, then follow the interface or mixer manual to enable it. Do not apply another model’s requirements to your mic.
- Signal distorts or clips: Reduce gain and verify that the source is connected to the input type intended for its level. A line-level source connected to an XLR mic input can overload the preamp.
- Mic works through a mixer but not on the PC: Check the mixer manual for its computer output and routing, then select the corresponding input in your PC application. A mixer’s microphone input alone does not establish how its audio reaches a computer.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the microphone is part of a live recording or gaming setup, the audio connection is only one part of the workflow. StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not stream microphone input or go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud.
- Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
