YouTube Stream Key Setup in vMix for an Always-On Channel

A practical guide to connecting vMix to YouTube with a stream key, checking encoder settings, and planning for an always-on broadcast.

To send a vMix production to YouTube, copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then enter them in vMix under Streaming Settings. For an always-on channel, test the complete setup and monitor it: a key connects the encoder to YouTube, but it does not make a local PC, vMix, power, or internet connection failproof. This guide covers the YouTube Studio-to-vMix setup, encoder settings, continuous-operation limits, and a cloud option for looping uploaded videos.

Before you start: enable live streaming and choose the workflow

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
  • Have vMix installed and a production ready to send. The integrated YouTube destination and Custom RTMP Server are both available workflows in the vMix 29 guide. vMix 29: Streaming
  • Decide whether you need a live-produced vMix program or a continuous loop of prerecorded videos. vMix is the local-production route; YouTube’s encoder guidance also identifies cloud services for 24/7 prerecorded video streams.

Integrated YouTube destination or Custom RTMP?

With vMix’s YouTube destination, you can connect to YouTube and select a channel or create/select a stream through the integrated workflow. Custom RTMP is the manual route: take the server URL and key from YouTube Studio and enter them in the corresponding vMix fields. Choose the route that best fits your scheduling and control needs. In vMix’s documented “YouTube Live Stream Now” workflow, ending the vMix stream also ends the YouTube stream. vMix 29: Streaming vMix: Streaming to YouTube Live

Get the YouTube server URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
  3. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key. Use the values for the selected stream, not a key from a different event. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder

Keep the key private. Do not include it in screenshots, public guides, logs shared with others, or chat. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the old value in vMix; owners or managers can reset a compromised key. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Enter the key and URL in vMix

  1. In vMix, click the cog beside the Stream button to open Streaming Settings. vMix 29: Streaming
  2. For the integrated route, choose YouTube Live and follow the prompts to connect and select or create the intended stream.
  3. For manual setup, choose Custom RTMP Server. Paste YouTube’s server URL into the URL field and the stream key into Stream Name or Key. Check carefully for missing characters or extra spaces.
  4. Select a quality/profile suitable for the program and your available upload speed. Confirm the output resolution and frame rate, then apply the settings.
  5. Start the vMix stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming preview appears and check stream health. When ready, verify the intended watch page is accessible and that audio and video are present.

The exact controls can vary by vMix version and configuration; the steps above follow the vMix 29 guide. YouTube’s codec and bitrate recommendations describe ingestion guidance, not a guarantee that every encoding option is available on every vMix installation or hardware setup. vMix 29: Streaming YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check encoder settings before going live

YouTube’s current general encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Supported formats listed by YouTube include H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the settings to what your vMix installation and hardware can actually encode. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

H.264 bitrate examples from YouTube

Output YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not measurements of your connection. Use the row matching your resolution and frame rate, then leave bandwidth headroom. For another output or codec, consult YouTube’s current table rather than assuming these values apply. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

What “always-on” requires in practice

With vMix, your production is running on a local computer. The PC, vMix process, source media, power, network equipment, and internet service all remain part of the chain. A stream key does not provide failover or restart protection. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring stream health, checking audio and video quality, and allowing 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Wired Ethernet can be a sensible choice where supported, but it does not guarantee continuity. Plan for interruptions and recovery

A connection disruption can break a stream. YouTube’s guidance emphasizes testing, previewing, monitoring health, and checking that the watch page is accessible. For unattended operation, decide who will notice an interruption and how they will restore the feed; the reviewed vMix and YouTube documentation does not establish a vMix-specific unattended restart or failover guarantee. Understand the archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a complete automatic archive for one continuous broadcast that passes the 12-hour threshold; if an archive matters, arrange separate recordings or shorter sessions. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish an official uninterrupted maximum duration. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

Copyright and content checks for a continuous channel

Before scheduling a long-running broadcast, make sure you have the rights and permissions for every video, music track, and other material you transmit. A valid stream key only authenticates the encoder; it does not grant rights to the content or determine whether a channel complies with YouTube policies. Check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and any applicable content restrictions in Studio before leaving a feed unattended.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming stream Wrong URL or key, wrong selected stream, or a channel that cannot currently go live Confirm live-stream eligibility, confirm the selected Studio stream, and recopy its server URL and key into vMix.
Stream fails after a key change vMix still has the old key Replace the key in Streaming Settings with the current YouTube value.
Stream health is poor or the picture stalls Upload capacity or stability is insufficient for the chosen bitrate Use a lower suitable profile, check upload stability, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom.
Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong Audio routing, input selection, or encoding setup is not producing the expected output Check audio in vMix and verify both audio and video in the Live Control Room preview before relying on the stream.
Stream stops during unattended operation Possible local PC, vMix, power, network, or source-media interruption Check the affected component and restore the feed, then confirm that YouTube receives it again. Do not assume the local workflow will restart itself.
Automatic archive is incomplete or absent after a very long stream The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive condition Use separate recordings or sessions if a complete archive is required.

For prerecorded loops: StreamNeo is the cloud alternative

If the channel needs a loop of uploaded videos rather than a live-produced vMix program, StreamNeo is #1 for that use case: it runs the YouTube stream from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a first day free. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; no computer or home connection needs to stay on. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. Plans have the same product; only the billing length changes. Billing options are:
