Linux is a sensible default for a 24/7 YouTube encoder on Azure if your encoder and source workflow support your chosen distribution and you can administer it. Choose Windows Server instead when your encoder, scripts, or established workflow depend on Windows—or when that is the system you can maintain more confidently. Neither OS guarantees a stable stream by itself, and the available facts do not establish a universal cost winner.
How to choose between Linux and Windows Server
The decision is about your encoder, the material it must play, your administration skills, and the complete Azure bill—not a YouTube ingest-protocol requirement. Azure supports both operating systems. A VM makes sense when you need control over the computing environment, but planning also means accounting for availability, billed resources, size, storage, networking, and possible service disruptions. Microsoft’s Azure VM overview outlines those considerations.

Microsoft says Windows Server licensing is included by default for Azure Windows VMs; its support page also says that, except for Hybrid Benefit scenarios, Windows VM license cost is identical across Windows Server editions. Confirm how the specific image and licensing situation apply to your deployment.
Which OS is likely to cost less on Azure?
There is no defensible blanket answer without a region, VM configuration, storage plan, schedule, and licensing details. The Windows Server license is included by default for Azure use, but that does not make the total Windows bill automatically lower or higher than Linux. Linux may also involve distribution support costs. Compare the actual configurations and include compute, disks, network transfer, and applicable support or licensing.

Network transfer deserves particular attention for a continuous stream. Azure bandwidth charges depend on region and transfer tier; the pricing page says displayed prices are estimates and can vary with purchase date, agreement, and currency. Its listed routes show the first 100 GB per month of internet egress as free, followed by tiered rates—check the current table and terms for your region and agreement rather than treating that allowance or any rate as universal. To estimate outbound data, use the selected stream bitrate and operating schedule. A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so include the resulting monthly transfer in your comparison; verify current regional pricing before choosing an OS on cost grounds.

Set YouTube encoder settings and test the stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on the resolution, frame rate, and encoder format; for H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not evidence that a particular Azure VM or network route can sustain them. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance
- Verify compatibility first. Confirm that your encoder and any required plugins, scripts, and media sources run on the chosen OS and version. Check distro or Windows Server support for your intended setup.
- Configure the encoder. Choose RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and the bitrate YouTube recommends for your target format. For H.264 at 1080p, the cited guidance gives 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps.
- Use the YouTube stream key securely. Configure the encoder with the stream key issued for your YouTube broadcast. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or expose it in scripts or logs that others can access.
- Test before relying on the setup. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream. Use representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health while it runs. A settings match alone does not prove the VM’s encoder or network path will remain stable.
- Monitor the live output. Watch for stream-health warnings, dropped frames, interrupted ingest, or audio problems. If an issue appears, check the encoder output and the VM’s resource and network conditions before changing several settings at once.
YouTube’s official guidance recommends testing and monitoring, but no named encoder, VM size, Azure region, or sustained-stream benchmark is specified here. Verify performance on the exact configuration you intend to operate.
