There is no YouTube-published bitrate specifically for static art or low-motion streams. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current live-ingest recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, then test whether a lower setting still preserves the details in your artwork and streams reliably. For 1080p30, YouTube’s current recommendations are 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264; for 720p30, they are 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264. These are codec-specific baselines, not minimums for still images.
What bitrate should you use for static art?
Start with the recommendation matching your stream’s ingest resolution, frame rate, and encoder codec. YouTube’s current live-ingest guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these video bitrate recommendations at 30 frames per second:
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Source: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” (current guidance accessed in 2026). YouTube does not give a separate row or discount for static images, and these figures are not a guarantee that a given connection can sustain a stream.
A still image may be easier to encode than fast-moving footage, but the official guidance does not quantify how much less bitrate it needs. If you want to go below the applicable recommendation, treat that as an experiment: inspect fine lines, gradients, and textures for softness or banding, and verify the live stream remains healthy.

How to choose and test a low-motion stream setting
-
Choose the resolution and frame rate
Decide what image size and frame rate you need before setting bitrate. For a static artwork scene, 30 fps may be sufficient, but the right resolution depends on the artwork’s detail and the viewing experience you want. YouTube’s recommended bitrate changes with resolution, frame rate, and codec; do not use an upload-video bitrate table as a substitute for live-ingest guidance.
-
Check the codec selected by your encoder
Use the YouTube table row for the codec actually being sent. At 1080p30, for example, the listed recommendation is 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. If you are unsure which codec your streaming software is using, check its output or streaming settings rather than assuming.

Measure the connection and leave room for variation
YouTube recommends choosing a quality that your internet connection can reliably support and running an upload speed test. The bitrate in the table is the video bitrate recommendation, not a target for your entire internet connection. A stream also needs capacity for audio and other network traffic, and a connection that fluctuates may fail even if its speed test briefly exceeds the video bitrate.
-
Set the required encoder parameters
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS as supported protocols and H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), with keyframes every two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes. Use settings supported by both your encoder and the selected YouTube ingest workflow.

Run a representative private or unlisted test
Test before the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends that tests include audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. For static art, include the real artwork, any intended overlays or transitions, and the actual audio, if any. View the result at the intended resolution and look closely at fine lines, gradients, and edges. If lowering bitrate creates visible degradation, raise it; if the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate or resolution rather than relying on the still scene to make an unreliable connection work.
-
Check stream health before relying on it
Watch YouTube’s live control room stream-health indicators during the test. A successful connection alone does not show that viewers are receiving the quality you intended. Confirm the stream remains healthy and that the picture and sound are acceptable on playback before using the configuration for a longer broadcast.

Why a static picture does not automatically mean a low bitrate
Bitrate is only one part of the result. The input resolution, frame rate, codec, artwork detail, and stability of the upload connection all matter. A design with subtle gradients or thin lines may reveal compression artifacts even when the image hardly changes. Conversely, a low-motion image can sometimes look acceptable at a lower setting, but YouTube does not publish a static-art-specific threshold. Judge the result on the actual stream rather than applying an assumed motion-based percentage reduction.
YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Your encoder’s ingest bitrate therefore does not specify one fixed bitrate that every viewer will receive.

Latency: usually less important for a hands-off art stream
If viewers are not interacting with you in real time, lower latency may not be worth prioritizing. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; latency matters more when you need to respond to chat or other audience interaction. Choose the latency mode with that trade-off in mind, then test playback for your intended audience experience. Source: YouTube Help, “Manage live stream settings.”
Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems
- The stream drops or reports insufficient bitrate: Your upload connection may not be sustaining the selected bitrate. Run an upload speed test, then lower the stream’s bitrate or resolution until the connection is reliable. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance covers bitrate-related errors.
- The image looks soft, banded, or broken up: The selected bitrate may not preserve the artwork’s fine detail at that resolution and codec. Compare a test at the recommended baseline for the matching row; check the encoder’s selected codec and resolution before changing several settings at once.
- YouTube reports a keyframe problem: Check that keyframes are set at two-second intervals and no more than four seconds apart, as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- The connection is stable but viewers still buffer: A stable encoder feed does not guarantee identical playback conditions for every viewer. Check stream health and test playback; if you selected lower latency, consider whether a less aggressive latency setting better suits a broadcast without live interaction.
- You changed the bitrate but cannot tell whether it helped: Compare tests using the same artwork, resolution, frame rate, audio, and viewing conditions. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether the difference came from bitrate or another part of the setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your static artwork is a recorded video or playlist you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer and home connection can be off. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality-based tiers, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Frequently Asked Questions
Does a static screen need less bitrate on YouTube Live?
Possibly for an individual stream, but YouTube does not publish a static-screen bitrate recommendation or a specific reduction. Test the actual image and judge both visible quality and stream stability.
Are YouTube Live bitrate recommendations the same as video-upload recommendations?
No. Use YouTube’s live-ingest encoder guidance for a live stream; upload-video recommendations are a separate set of settings.
