Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf OBS reports “encoding overloaded” while you stream at 1080p, first try changing 60 fps to 30 fps if that suits your game, then lower the stream’s Output (Scaled) Resolution—such as to 1280×720—while keeping the Base (Canvas) Resolution at 1920×1080 if you want to preserve your scene layout. If the problem continues, reduce resource-heavy scene elements and review your encoder. These changes target rendering and encoding load; lowering bitrate alone is not the main fix for a CPU encoding bottleneck.
Confirm that encoding is the problem
OBS’s “encoding overloaded” warning and choppy output can indicate that the system is not keeping up with rendering or encoding. But a stream can also stutter because of network delivery problems, so do not assume every choppy broadcast is a CPU issue. Start with the OBS encoding performance troubleshooting guide, then compare OBS’s status with YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Make one change at a time and test with the game, motion, and audio you expect to stream. That makes it easier to identify which setting helps rather than changing several things without knowing the cause.
Lower OBS workload in the least disruptive order
-
Reduce 60 fps to 30 fps if the content allows
In OBS, open Settings > Video and change Common FPS Values from 60 to 30. OBS notes that frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance and recommends trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Thirty frames per second can suit slower-paced games, strategy titles, and commentary-led streams; games with fast movement may benefit more from 60 fps if your system can sustain it.

-
Lower the output resolution, not necessarily the canvas
In Settings > Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 as a practical first downscale from 1920×1080. You can leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at 1920×1080 to retain the space in which your sources are arranged. The canvas is your scene-layout workspace; the output resolution determines the stream’s resolution. Lowering output resolution can reduce encoder load, though the result depends on your hardware and scene.
-
Reduce scene and source work
Disable or simplify resource-heavy filters, media sources, browser sources, high-resolution capture sources, and scene elements you do not need. Some sources and filters can consume resources even when they are not visible. Test after each adjustment so you can identify a costly source rather than stripping down every scene unnecessarily.

Review the encoder
In Settings > Output, check the selected encoder. If your system has a supported hardware encoder, OBS recommends considering it for performance: a compatible GPU or platform encoder can move encoding work off the CPU. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to hardware and platform compatibility. Earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 software encoding using its default veryfast preset.
If you stay with x264, try a faster CPU-usage preset in the encoder settings and compare the picture at your intended bitrate. A faster preset can reduce CPU demand, but it can also reduce image quality; it is not a free improvement. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the trade-offs and compatibility considerations.

Choose between 1080p30, 720p60, and 720p30
There is no universal best setting: the right choice depends on the game’s motion, the value of image detail, available encoder headroom, and whether your upload and YouTube ingest settings support the stream. Use this comparison as a decision aid, then test on your own setup.
| Output | Perceived detail | Motion smoothness | CPU and encoder headroom | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | Retains 1080p output detail | Less smooth than 60 fps for fast movement | Lower frame rate can ease workload compared with 1080p60, but 1080p encoding still takes work | When 1080p detail matters more than 60 fps motion |
| 720p60 | Less output detail than 1080p | Smoother motion than 30 fps | Lower output resolution can ease encoding; 60 fps still adds workload | When motion matters and your system can sustain 60 fps at the lower resolution |
| 720p30 | Less output detail than 1080p | Less smooth than 60 fps | Combines lower output resolution and frame rate, which may reduce workload | When stability takes priority over resolution and high frame rate |
These are trade-offs, not benchmark results: the reviewed OBS and YouTube guidance does not establish one configuration that wins for every CPU, GPU, game, scene, or OBS version.

Keep YouTube bitrate settings separate from CPU fixes
Bitrate controls delivery requirements, not the core rendering and encoding workload that causes CPU overload. Lowering it alone is not the primary cure for an overloaded CPU. YouTube’s published ingest recommendations depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec; for H.264, the recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of CPU use.
YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for codec-specific details before configuring your encoder.

Test stream health and upload capacity
-
Reproduce the real workload
Run a test with game movement, scene changes, and audio similar to the planned broadcast. A static desktop test may not reveal the load from gameplay or animated sources.
-
Watch OBS and YouTube status
Monitor OBS for encoding warnings and YouTube for stream-health messages while the test runs. YouTube recommends testing before going live and continuously monitoring quality; see its YouTube live streaming tips.
-
Check network headroom independently
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend approximately 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Insufficient upload capacity can cause delivery problems even when CPU encoding is stable; CPU overload and network limits need different fixes.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
- OBS says “encoding overloaded,” or output is choppy: reduce frame rate, then output resolution; simplify demanding sources and filters; test a compatible hardware encoder or a faster x264 preset.
- OBS looks stable, but YouTube reports poor stream health: check upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. Review the encoder’s bitrate and keyframe settings against YouTube’s current guidance.
- Quality worsens after switching to hardware encoding or a faster x264 preset: compare the image at the same output and bitrate. The encoder change may reduce quality; choose the best stability-quality balance your system sustains.
- One scene performs worse than others: disable or simplify sources and filters one at a time, including sources that may still use resources while hidden.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded video or playlist that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera or gameplay feed, so it is not a replacement for streaming a game as you play. Because it runs in the cloud, nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
