If a school-issued Google Workspace for Education account is marked as belonging to someone under 18 in a K–12 institution, YouTube lists creating live streams as unavailable. A webcam, encoder, or change to viewing permissions cannot remove that restriction. If you are 18 or older but the school account is incorrectly marked under 18, ask the school administrator to correct the age designation; then sign in to YouTube and create a channel if prompted. YouTube’s school-account guidance and Google’s Workspace for Education feature guidance explain the distinction.
First, check why the school account cannot go live
School-issued Google Workspace for Education accounts are managed by the school. Whether the account can create a live stream depends in part on its school setting and age designation—not just on the YouTube channel or streaming equipment.
If the account is for a K–12 student marked under 18
Google lists creating live streams among the unavailable YouTube features for K–12 users designated under 18. The documented guidance does not describe an administrator setting that overrides this restriction for an under-18 user. Do not treat switching a viewing permission or buying an encoder as a way to enable live-stream creation.
If you are 18 or older but the account is marked under 18
Contact the school administrator and ask them to correct the account’s age designation. YouTube’s school-account instructions say to sign in to YouTube afterward and create a channel if prompted.

Do not confuse viewing access with live-stream eligibility
Google documents “Unrestricted YouTube access” as a control over viewing access. Its documentation does not say that enabling this permission overrides the K–12 under-18 restriction on creating live streams. See Google’s explanation of YouTube settings for Workspace for Education.
Once the account is eligible, meet YouTube’s channel requirements
School-account eligibility and YouTube’s general live-stream requirements are separate checks. Even if the school account permits streaming, the channel must meet YouTube’s requirements:

- The streamer must be at least 16 years old.
- The channel must be verified.
- The channel must have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
YouTube states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming for current eligibility guidance.
Enable and start a live stream
- Resolve any school-account restriction first. If you are 18 or older and incorrectly marked under 18, ask the administrator to correct the designation. If you are a K–12 user under 18, the documented school-account restriction applies.
- Sign in to YouTube with the eligible school account. Create a channel if YouTube prompts you to do so.
- Verify the channel. Follow YouTube’s verification process for the account.
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create, then Go Live.
- Choose a streaming method. Select Webcam for a straightforward broadcast from a computer, or choose an encoder for a more involved setup. YouTube also lists mobile and console streaming options where supported.
These production choices do not change account eligibility. If the school account still blocks live streaming, changing methods will not remove that block.

Choose a method only after access is allowed
- Webcam: A simple computer broadcast without a separate encoder workflow.
- Mobile: A phone-based option, subject to YouTube’s availability and eligibility requirements.
- Encoder: Useful for more complex audio and video setups, such as gameplay production or external hardware.
