For a mostly static or low-motion 24/7 playlist, 30fps is a sensible default when it matches the source videos. Choose 60fps when the playlist contains genuine fast motion that looks smoother at that rate—and your encoder and connection can sustain the applicable bitrate. YouTube does not prescribe a frame rate specifically for 24/7 playlist channels; this recommendation follows from its general live-stream settings and the motion in your content.
What changes when you choose 30fps or 60fps?
Frame rate is the number of frames sent each second. A 60fps stream can represent motion more smoothly than a 30fps stream when the source footage actually contains those extra moments in time. It cannot create motion detail that was never recorded or rendered: sending 30fps footage as a 60fps signal does not make its original movement genuinely smoother.
For static artwork, slides, or slowly moving ambient visuals, the additional frames may add little viewers can see. Gameplay, sports, or other fast-moving footage is more likely to benefit. These are practical judgments based on the material, not results of a controlled comparison.
Compare YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your codec
YouTube’s live encoder settings give different recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec. The following are recommended—not minimum—bitrates from YouTube’s settings table. The page does not show a publication date, so check it again before configuring a stream.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30fps | 10 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p, 30fps | 8 Mbps | Not stated for this row in the cited YouTube example |
| 720p, 60fps | 8 Mbps | Not stated for this row in the cited YouTube example |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not a universal multiplier for moving from 30fps to 60fps. For example, the H.264 recommendation rises at 1080p but stays at 8 Mbps for both 720p rates in the cited table. Do not apply H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265. For other resolutions, use YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for secure transport. Its guidance says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. Codec availability and recommended bitrates can change; confirm the current encoder settings for your workflow.

Choose a frame rate for the playlist you actually have
Mostly static or low-motion videos
Start at 30fps if that matches the source material. For still artwork, slides, and slow scenes, 60fps may send more frames without a meaningful visual gain. This is an editorial recommendation for the content type, not a YouTube rule for continuous playlists.
Frequent fast motion
Consider 60fps when the source itself contains fast movement, such as gameplay, and a representative test shows a visible improvement. Check the recommended bitrate for the resolution and codec you plan to use, and verify your upload connection can sustain it consistently.

A playlist mixing 30fps and 60fps material
Base the choice on the most important high-motion videos and how your encoder handles the mix. Do not assume that mixed-rate files will be converted in a particular way: verify the behavior in your actual workflow before relying on it.
Unsure which looks better?
Run a private or unlisted test with representative movement and audio. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then checking the preview, stream health, and any messages before relying on the setup.

Set up and monitor a reliable continuous stream
Frame rate is only one part of a 24/7 channel. A smooth-looking signal is not useful if your encoder or connection cannot keep it running. YouTube recommends monitoring audio/video quality and stream health; its setup guidance also advises checking the preview and confirming the event is accessible. Test the settings you intend to use rather than assuming that a short test proves long-term reliability.
YouTube defines latency as the time between capture at the encoder or camera and playback to viewers. Lower latency can mean more buffering, and YouTube notes that low latency matters less when the streamer is not interacting with viewers. That consideration applies to a playlist stream but does not determine whether to use 30fps or 60fps.

YouTube’s upload guidance says prerecorded videos should be encoded and uploaded at the frame rate at which they were recorded, listing 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60fps as common rates. That guidance is about video uploads, not a separate live-ingestion mandate; it does not by itself settle which live encoder setting to choose.
Costs and equipment: what the settings do not tell you
YouTube’s cited guidance does not quantify power consumption, monthly operating cost, failure rates, or hardware lifetime for continuous 30fps versus 60fps streaming. Actual costs and stability depend on the encoder, codec, resolution, machine or hosting arrangement, and connection; there is no established universal cost difference to apply.
An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. YouTube describes hardware encoders as suitable for higher-production-value events, but its tips also say expensive equipment is not required to get started. No particular model is necessary just to select 60fps. If choosing equipment, verify its codec, resolution, and frame-rate support for the workflow you will use.
