YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 or 14 Mbps at 1080p60; keep at least 20% upload headroom. The important operational caveat: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not promise automatic archiving for a 24-hour broadcast.
Recommended 1080p settings
Use the source video’s frame rate where practical. A static news presentation or footage produced at 30 fps generally does not benefit from being sent at 60 fps; use 60 fps when the source and motion warrant it and your connection can sustain the higher bitrate. YouTube’s figures below are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stream quality.

These are YouTube’s published values; the settings pages do not state a publication year. Choose a codec your encoder supports and that fits your workflow. Do not treat the listed minimum as a target for a dependable 24/7 feed.
Encoder settings to check
- Video: 1920×1080, progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Select 30 or 60 fps to match the material.
- Rate control: CBR. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and lists 4 seconds as the maximum.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are supported. YouTube’s advanced-settings guidance recommends stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes it as the secure extension to RTMP.
For a 1080p Telugu news playlist, language does not require a special encoder preset: YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not document Telugu-specific live settings.

How much upload bandwidth does a 1080p stream need?
Plan for sustained upload capacity above the selected video bitrate, not merely a speed-test result that briefly reaches it. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. For example, a 10 Mbps video bitrate calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that guidance; 14 Mbps calls for at least 16.8 Mbps. These calculations apply to the video bitrate alone; account for other traffic and any backup stream when sizing the connection.
YouTube’s bandwidth tip gives the calculation for a primary stream plus a backup stream plus 20% when using a backup encoder. A shared or unstable connection can still disrupt a stream even when a speed test looks adequate. For a continuous channel, use a stable wired connection where possible, avoid competing uploads, and monitor stream health rather than assuming the connection will remain suitable unattended.

Connect a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder.
- Choose the key deliberately: A custom stream key can be reused and has manual resolution settings. YouTube treats the key like a password: keep it private. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it.
- Set the encoder: Apply the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe, audio, and transport settings above. Load the prerecorded playlist in the encoder or playback system that will feed it.
- Start and inspect the preview: Start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, and confirm picture, audio, and stream health messages before taking the event live.
- Verify the viewer experience: Check the channel’s watch page and a mobile playback session. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages.
- Test continuity measures: If you have a backup encoder, test the failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirm the player rolls over to the backup. Check that any local archive file is growing.
Test the full chain before relying on it for a scheduled news feed. A correctly configured encoder cannot by itself guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Plan for DVR, latency, and archiving
DVR and latency
Enable DVR if viewers should be able to pause and rewind. Lower latency can increase buffering, so for a prerecorded playlist that viewers do not interact with in real time, stable playback may matter more than minimizing delay.

The 12-hour archive limit matters
YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single 24-hour broadcast will be archived automatically. Plan the broadcast and a separate local recording or archive strategy around that limit. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a specific supported method for stitching or restarting a continuous broadcast, so verify any proposed workflow before depending on it.
Troubleshooting common 1080p live-stream problems
- YouTube reports poor connection or playback buffers: Check the actual sustained upload rate, reduce competing network traffic, and confirm the encoder bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen setting, use a lower frame rate or bitrate from YouTube’s table.
- The stream looks choppy despite a strong connection: Confirm that the output frame rate matches the source and that the encoder is not being asked to produce 60 fps unnecessarily. Check stream-health messages and the encoder’s output.
- There is no preview or the event does not receive the feed: Recheck the copied stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the intended event is open in Live Control Room, and start the encoder again. If the key may have been exposed, reset it through a channel owner or manager.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: Verify the selected audio input, codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate; check the preview before going live.
- The broadcast drops and does not recover: Check the encoder and network, restart the feed if needed, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. If a backup encoder is part of the design, test its rollover rather than assuming it will take over.
- A 24-hour stream has no automatic archive: This is not contradicted by YouTube’s under-12-hour archive statement. Use the archive plan established before broadcast rather than assuming the full-day stream will be saved automatically.
