For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream using H.265/HEVC, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you will send. For 1080p30, that recommendation is 10 Mbps; for 1080p60, it is 12 Mbps. HDR is a separate workflow: YouTube requires HEVC, 10-bit, correctly matched HDR metadata, and HLS ingestion.

Recommended H.265 settings for SDR

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.265/HEVC as an accepted video codec over RTMP/RTMPS. For a regular SDR stream, start with these settings and verify that your encoder is actually sending them; the source file’s name or container does not establish the live output settings. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically, while custom stream keys allow manual resolution settings. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates

Setting Recommended value
Protocol RTMPS for encrypted transport; RTMP is also documented for SDR.
Video codec H.265 / HEVC
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate)
Keyframes Every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Scan and pixels Progressive scan; square pixels.
Advanced video settings 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC.
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps; use the intended source frame rate where the encoder allows it.

Choose the ingest resolution and frame rate to match the output you intend to send, rather than assuming YouTube receives the file unchanged. These bitrate figures are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended settings for AV1/H.265 ingest, not independently measured quality thresholds. YouTube encoder settings

Ingest resolution / frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
2160p / 60 fps 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p / 30 fps 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p / 60 fps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p / 30 fps 5 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p / 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p / 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p / 60 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p / 30 fps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p / 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p / 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

Audio settings

YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Use AAC if you need 5.1 audio: 5.1 is supported only for AAC. The listed audio settings are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, at 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1. YouTube encoder settings

HDR requires a different configuration

Do not apply the SDR color checklist to an HDR source. YouTube’s current HDR live guidance supports only H.265/HEVC and requires 10-bit video, BT.2020 primaries, BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix coefficients, and transfer characteristics matching the source: ST 2084 PQ or HLG. Do not label SDR or mismatched material as HDR. YouTube HDR live streaming guidance

For HDR, YouTube requires an HLS stream-key protocol. In Live Control Room, leave “Turn on manual settings” unchecked, which is the default. HLS configuration requires TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range mode, and no encryption other than HTTPS. HLS has more latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments; ultra-low latency is unavailable with HLS. YouTube HLS setup

Choose the protocol and workflow

  • SDR: Use RTMPS where available for encrypted transport; YouTube also documents RTMP. HLS is an alternative if your encoder requires HLS ingestion.
  • HDR: Use HEVC over HLS and meet the HDR metadata and segment requirements above.
  • Local software: YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS as free, open-source recording and streaming software; its HLS instructions include OBS among supported encoders. Confirm that your chosen OBS version and configuration can output the codec and protocol you need.
  • Continuous prerecorded playback: YouTube’s directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming. A directory listing establishes category fit, not the service’s current price, codec support for your specific file, or suitability for every channel; verify those details with the provider.

YouTube’s encoder directory includes software, cloud services, and specialized broadcast tools. Hardware or broadcast-grade services are not necessary for every creator; choose them only when your production requirements call for them. YouTube Live verified encoder directory

Prepare the file and test the live output

A prerecorded H.265 file is not automatically a valid live feed. The encoder or service must turn it into a continuous stream in the selected ingestion protocol. Before going live, inspect both the source and the encoder output for resolution, frame rate, SDR/HDR state, audio codec, and continuous audio. Test a representative section with movement and sound similar to the planned stream. YouTube encoder guidance YouTube live streaming tips

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current start guide says users must be at least 16 to live stream. Check eligibility before configuring the encoder. YouTube live streaming eligibility and setup
  2. Inspect the actual output. Confirm the resolution, frame rate, codec, color range, and audio settings the encoder will send. For HDR, verify that the file’s actual metadata and the output signaling match.
  3. Check upload bandwidth. Test the real network path the encoder will use. YouTube advises that total outgoing bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for both primary and backup streams where applicable; shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder. YouTube network and encoder tips
  4. Set up and preview early. YouTube suggests setting up at least 2 hours before the event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before it. Preview in Live Control Room, confirm the stream appears on the channel or watch page, monitor audio and video, and check that any local archive is intact. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees against failure.

Troubleshoot common H.265 live problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Stream will not connect Wrong stream key, unsupported protocol, or channel not eligible. Confirm the key and selected RTMPS/RTMP or HLS protocol in the encoder and Live Control Room; check verification and restriction eligibility.
Dropped frames or unstable ingest Outgoing bitrate exceeds available upload bandwidth, or the connection is shared or inconsistent. Measure the encoder’s actual upload path, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and account for primary plus backup streams.
Unexpected resolution or frame rate The encoder output differs from the file or selected stream settings. Inspect encoder output and Live Control Room detection. If using a custom stream key, check its manual resolution settings.
HDR appears wrong or is rejected Wrong bit depth, color metadata, transfer function, or protocol. Use HEVC, 10-bit, source-matched BT.2020/PQ or HLG signaling, and the required HLS setup; do not mark SDR material as HDR.
Audio is absent or incompatible Unsupported audio codec, channel layout, sample rate, or broken file audio. Use AAC or MP3 for the general RTMP/RTMPS path; for 5.1 use AAC. Confirm continuity and the applicable sample rate and bitrate.
Longer delay than expected HLS delivers segmented video and has more latency than RTMP. Use the protocol appropriate to the workflow; HLS remains required for YouTube HDR live streaming.
