You can rotate a YouTube playlist by calendar day with a scheduled script using the YouTube Data API: calculate the day’s desired videos, compare them with the playlist, then insert missing items and delete items that no longer belong. First, separate that task from changing what viewers actually see in a live broadcast: updating playlist membership does not switch the live feed.
Choose what “rotate the livestream playlist” means
There are two different outcomes people may mean:
- Change playlist membership: Make a YouTube playlist contain the video or group of videos assigned to today. The API workflow below does this.
- Change the live program: Make the encoder or playout system switch the video viewers are watching. Editing a playlist does not start, stop, bind, or change the media in a live broadcast. That requires separate playout or encoder automation.
YouTube models a live broadcast as an event and a stream as its transmission settings and content feed. A broadcast is bound to one stream. See the YouTube Live Streaming API Reference and Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Plan the day-to-video rule
Before writing the job, define the behavior precisely. “Day of the month” depends on a time zone and a policy for short months; leaving either implicit can produce surprising results.
- Selection: Does each day select one video, a fixed group, or one group from a repeating cycle?
- Time zone and change time: Choose the time zone that defines the calendar date. Decide whether to update after midnight in that zone or at another specified time.
- Days 29–31: Choose what happens when a month has fewer days. Options include repeating a cycle, assigning specific videos only to existing dates, or using a defined fallback.
- Playlist behavior: Decide whether the playlist should contain only the current day’s selection or retain earlier items. This guide assumes it should contain only the desired set.
- Order: Decide whether video order matters. If it does, the playlist must support manual sorting for position-based inserts.
Use a repeating cycle
For a cycle of N groups, calculate a zero-based group index with (dayOfMonth - 1) % N. For example, a four-group cycle maps day 1 to group 0, day 2 to group 1, and day 5 back to group 0. This formula repeats by day number; it does not account for whether a date exists in a particular month beyond the date supplied to it.

Use an explicit calendar mapping
If particular dates must always select particular videos, define a table keyed by day number instead of using a repeating formula. Include an explicit policy for dates 29, 30, and 31 and for a month that does not have one of those dates.
Set up the API job
The workflow uses the YouTube Data API playlist methods. The job needs authorization for the relevant channel and the playlist ID. A playlist-item ID is distinct from a video’s resource ID: use the playlist ID and video resource ID to insert, and the playlist-item ID to delete.

- Authorize the job and identify the playlist. Use playlists.list to find or retrieve the target playlist and record its playlist ID.
- Read current membership. List the playlist’s items and retain each entry’s playlist-item ID and video resource ID. Handle pagination if the playlist has more items than one response returns.
- Compute the target set. Get the current date in the configured time zone, apply your day-to-video rule, and produce the desired video IDs in the intended order.
- Compare before writing. Find desired videos not currently present and current items that should leave. Insert only the missing items and delete only the extras; do not clear and rebuild the playlist on every run.
- Set positions only if needed. If exact ordering matters, use the insert method’s position field and configure the playlist for Manual sorting first. Otherwise omit position and let the playlist’s ordering behavior apply.
- Verify and log. After writes, read the playlist again and compare its membership with the target. Log the computed date, desired IDs, API responses, and errors.
The relevant operations are playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.delete. The insert request uses snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId; deletion identifies the playlist item by its item ID.
Reconcile safely on every run
A reconciliation job is safer than blind replacement: repeated runs with the same date should leave the playlist in the same state without adding duplicates or issuing unnecessary writes. A simple outline is:

delete playlist itemUse a stable playlist and prevent overlapping executions. If two jobs run at once, one can make decisions from a stale playlist view. A read after the writes helps detect a mismatch; avoid responding to an API error by deleting the entire playlist.
Schedule, monitor, and budget API quota
Schedule the job for the intended daily change time in the chosen time zone. Scheduling and monitoring are responsibilities of your hosting environment; the API does not guarantee that your scheduled job will run.

playlists.listcosts 1 quota unit per call (Google for Developers, 2026). Check the documented cost for the playlist-item listing operation you use as well. - Daily allocation: Google documents a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most YouTube Data API endpoints. The documented quota reset is midnight Pacific Time, not necessarily midnight where your channel or scheduler is located. See the YouTube Data API Quota Calculator.
- Reduce writes: Calculate the difference between actual and desired membership and send only necessary inserts and deletes. A no-change day should not incur playlist-item write calls.
Insertions can fail if the playlist does not support the operation, a video is unavailable, or the requested position is invalid. Log errors and preserve the existing playlist state when a write fails; investigate the cause before retrying or applying destructive changes.

Playlist editing alone is not a live playout system. To change the video viewers see, separately configure software or a service that can select and play the desired media and transmit it to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API covers broadcast and stream resources, including creating or reusing a stream, binding a broadcast to it, and moving the broadcast through its lifecycle. The implementation guide, broadcast and stream model, and broadcast lifecycle describe these separate steps. The lifecycle also limits when some scheduled times and content settings can be changed.

Choose a playout system only after confirming that it supports date-based source rotation and the YouTube output workflow you need. Keep playlist-membership automation and on-air playback automation as separate jobs unless your chosen system explicitly handles both.

Troubleshooting
- The job ran, but the playlist is unchanged: Confirm it computed the intended local date and targeted the correct playlist ID. Check authorization and inspect logged API responses.
- Insert fails: Confirm the video is available to the channel and the playlist accepts the operation. If you sent a position, verify Manual sorting is enabled and the position is valid.
- Unexpected order: If exact ordering matters, configure Manual sorting and use positions. Without a position, the playlist’s existing ordering behavior applies.
- Videos disappear or remain unexpectedly: Compare video resource IDs with playlist-item IDs. Use resource IDs to determine which videos are present, but use each playlist-item ID for deletion.
- Two runs produce conflicting results: Prevent overlapping jobs, then read the playlist again and reconcile from the latest state.
- Quota runs low: Count only required inserts and deletes, since each costs 50 units in Google’s 2026 documentation; avoid rebuilding unchanged playlists.
- The playlist changed but viewers still see the same live video: That is expected. The playlist API edits membership, not the active live feed. Configure and verify a separate playout/encoder workflow.

Only schedule videos you have the rights to use and that comply with YouTube’s applicable policies. A playlist update does not establish permission to broadcast its videos or guarantee that a stream will remain available. For recurring programming, review the content and rights for every video before adding it to the rotation.
