How to Rotate a YouTube 24/7 Playlist at IST Midnight with Windows Task Scheduler

Windows Task Scheduler can launch an action at IST midnight, but your encoder must handle the playlist change. Set local time to IST, configure the task, and test the transition in YouTube Live Control Room.

You can schedule a Windows task for 00:00 local time, but Task Scheduler will not switch a YouTube playlist by itself. It only launches a program or script. The encoder must provide a way to change media while connected, or your action must end one stream and start another. Set the Windows host’s time zone to India Standard Time (IST), verify its displayed clock, then test the encoder and task together before relying on the midnight rotation.

Decide what “rotate” means before scheduling

There are two different ways to rotate a YouTube 24/7 playlist at IST midnight. Which one you can use depends on the encoder and its supported controls:

Approach What the task triggers Continuity and YouTube event What to verify
Switch media in the active encoder session An encoder-supported action changes the playlist or media source while the encoder remains connected. This is the approach intended to avoid ending the current stream, but the cited YouTube encoder guidance does not establish that a particular encoder can do it. It does not establish the resulting event or archive behavior either. Confirm the selected encoder supports the switch and test that the output actually changes without disconnecting.
End one stream and start another A first action stops the current output; a second starts the next playlist or stream. The current stream ends. Whether the next output continues the same event or creates a separate one depends on the encoder and YouTube setup; verify it rather than assuming continuity. Test the stop/start sequence, the event shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and what viewers see during the transition.

If uninterrupted output matters, do not treat a scheduled stop-and-start as equivalent to a live media switch. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe starting an encoder and ending output; they do not provide a universal in-session playlist-switch method.

Prepare YouTube and the encoder

  1. Choose the rotation behavior. Check the documentation for your specific encoder to find its supported playlist or source-switch action. If it has none, decide whether ending and restarting the stream is acceptable. Task Scheduler cannot supply a missing encoder feature.
  2. Set up the YouTube live stream. In the encoder’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to use your stream. YouTube allows custom stream keys to be reused and provides an option to reset a key in Live Control Room. If you reset it, update the encoder before the next scheduled run.
  3. Identify the exact action to automate. Use only an action supported by your encoder, such as its documented playlist switch, command-line option, or control interface. If you need a script to call that action, write and test the script first. There is no universal Task Scheduler command that rotates every encoder’s media playlist.
  4. Test the encoder manually. Start the stream, check the YouTube Live Control Room preview, trigger the planned media change, and monitor picture and sound through the transition. If the plan is to stop and restart, confirm what happens to the live event and to viewers.

Set Windows to IST and confirm the clock

schtasks supports a daily schedule with a start time in 24-hour HH:mm format. The trigger time is local to the Windows computer; the command does not provide a separate time-zone setting for an IST trigger. Set the host’s local time zone to India Standard Time and confirm that the displayed time is correct before creating the schedule. If you leave the host in another time zone, 00:00 will mean midnight in that zone, not IST.

In Windows, open Settings → Time & language → Date & time, set the time zone to (UTC+05:30) Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi if that is the India Standard Time option shown on your system, and verify the clock. Windows labels can vary by version, so confirm the selected zone and displayed local time rather than relying on the label alone.

Create the daily midnight task

Using Task Scheduler

  1. Open Task Scheduler and select Create Task. Give the task a descriptive name, such as Rotate YouTube playlist at IST midnight.
  2. On Triggers, select New, set Begin the task to On a schedule, choose Daily, and set the start time to 00:00:00. Confirm that the Windows host still displays IST.
  3. On Actions, select New → Start a program. Set Program/script to the full path of the encoder executable or the script that calls the encoder’s documented action. Add only the arguments required by that encoder or script; do not guess command-line options.
  4. If the action uses relative file paths, set Start in (optional) to the working directory the script or encoder requires. Test with the same account and paths the scheduled task will use.
  5. On General and Settings, choose a user and run condition that match how the encoder works. A GUI encoder may require the user to be logged on and an interactive desktop. Microsoft documents an interactive-only option that runs only while that user is logged on, so do not assume a GUI encoder will work in an unattended session.
  6. Save the task, run it manually from Task Scheduler, then inspect the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm the scheduled action reaches the intended media change and that picture and sound continue as expected.

Using schtasks

For a task whose action is already tested, the daily trigger can be created from Command Prompt with this documented schedule pattern:

schtasks /create /tn "Rotate YouTube playlist at IST midnight" /sc daily /st 00:00 /tr ""C:PathToYourAction.exe" arguments"

Replace the executable path and arguments with the actual action supported by your encoder or script. The quoted example is a command-line pattern, not a playlist-switch command. Run it in the Windows account and permissions context the task needs, then inspect the task in Task Scheduler and run it manually before depending on the daily trigger. If the action needs a logged-in desktop, configure and test the task accordingly.

Test recovery and the midnight transition

  • Run the action manually first; verify it changes the intended playlist rather than merely launching the encoder.
  • Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview for picture and sound before and after the change, and monitor the transition.
  • Confirm whether the encoder stays connected or ends and starts output. Do not infer that from a successful task status alone.
  • Check which Windows account runs the task and whether that account can access the encoder, media files, and any required control interface.
  • Test the exact task and session setup you plan to use at the actual scheduled time. A GUI encoder’s behavior in an unattended session cannot be assumed from a manual test while logged in.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That statement does not establish archival behavior for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours, so do not rely on it to predict what happens to an extended 24/7 event.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The task runs at the wrong midnight. Windows is using a local time zone other than IST, or its displayed clock is incorrect. Check the host’s selected time zone and displayed time. The daily trigger uses the computer’s local time.
The task reports that it ran, but the playlist did not change. The action launched a program or script but did not invoke a supported encoder control. Test the encoder’s documented switch method manually, then verify the script or action calls that same method.
The GUI encoder does not react when the task runs unattended. The task may be running without the interactive user session the encoder needs. Check the task’s user and interactive-only setting. Test using the same login and run conditions as the scheduled task.
The next stream fails after a key reset. The encoder still has the previous stream key. Update the encoder with the current key from YouTube Live Control Room, then test the connection before the next scheduled transition.
The stream ends or viewers see an interruption. The chosen rotation method stops and restarts output, or the encoder disconnects during the change. Check the encoder’s supported switching behavior and test the transition in YouTube’s preview. A scheduled task cannot guarantee that a stop/start will preserve one continuous event.
