A Creative Commons label does not automatically make a YouTube livestream copyright claim invalid. First check the claim’s claimant, matched audio and timestamps in YouTube Studio. Then verify that the original rights holder licensed the exact recording for your use, and save evidence of the license and its conditions. Dispute only if that evidence gives you a valid basis; otherwise, consider leaving the claim or editing the claimed audio out of the archived video.
Check what YouTube claimed
Open the livestream archive’s claim details in YouTube Studio. Review the “Content used” and “Claimant” information, then record the matched segment and timestamps, the claim policy, and any territories affected. More than one claimant may appear for different segments or territories, so an unfamiliar name alone does not prove that a claim is wrong. YouTube’s explanation of copyright claims describes how claims can affect a video by blocking, monetizing, or tracking it, including by territory.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike. A strike results from a valid copyright removal request; a claim may instead affect the video’s availability or monetization without being a strike. Check the specific notice before deciding what to do.
Verify the license for the exact recording
Start with the original artist, label, or other rights holder’s release page—not a repost or download page that merely labels a track “Creative Commons.” A person who uploads a copy may not have authority to license it. Match the claimed audio to the exact title and recording, since a different version, remix, or recording can have different rights.

Save evidence that connects the track to the grant
- The exact track title and version or recording, and the creator or rights holder.
- The original release-page URL and the date you accessed it; save a dated screenshot or PDF of the license statement.
- The license name and version, such as CC BY 4.0, plus a copy or link to its terms.
- Any extra permissions, required attribution wording, commercial-use limits, or other conditions stated by the licensor.
- The livestream or VOD URL, how you used the music, and the claim’s matched timestamps.
YouTube’s license guidance identifies the attribution details for Creative Commons use as the work title, author, source URL, and license information. YouTube’s selectable Creative Commons license is CC BY, which requires attribution. Whether commercial use is allowed depends on the license grant. A license label displayed on a page does not, by itself, establish that the uploader had all the rights needed to offer that license.
Decide whether to dispute or edit
YouTube lists having the necessary rights, relying on a copyright exception, or believing the match is mistaken as possible valid reasons to dispute a claim. Giving credit, owning a copy of the audio, or choosing not to monetize are not valid reasons on their own. YouTube says it cannot determine who owns rights or whether a creator’s license is valid; the claimant reviews the dispute. See YouTube’s dispute process before submitting one.

Dispute when the evidence supports your basis
In YouTube Studio, open the claim details and choose Dispute. Explain the specific basis accurately: identify the track and recording, describe what the original rights holder’s license permits, and point to the original work and license source. Include only permissions you can support with evidence. A standard dispute gives the claimant 30 days to respond. The claimant may release or reinstate the claim, or submit a copyright removal request; a valid removal request can remove the video and result in a strike.
A blocked claim may offer Escalate to Appeal, which skips the initial dispute stage. The claimant has 7 days to respond to an appeal. Because an appeal can lead to a removal request and strike, use it only when your rights evidence supports your position and you accept that risk.

Edit when you do not want to dispute
If the claim is valid, or you prefer not to challenge it, YouTube may let you trim the segment, replace the song with Audio Library music, or mute the claimed audio. The available options depend on the claim and video. YouTube’s instructions for removing claimed content describe these editing options. Important: YouTube says that since June 2025, saved YouTube Studio Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.” Download a backup before saving edits.
For future livestreams: prevent avoidable interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match during the broadcast can trigger a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination. A Content ID claim on an archived livestream is a separate timing point: YouTube says it is made after the stream ends if you choose to archive the video. Even a licensed creator’s stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting before using the track live. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
