For gaming creators, that may mean edited YouTube videos, short-form clips, livestreams, a podcast, or a newsletter—not necessarily choosing only one. Start with a sustainable format, then build around one primary way people discover you and one way to deepen the relationship.
Compare creator paths by the work and audience they require
Platform monetization is a possible route, not a dependable paycheck: official platform pages explain eligibility and features, not what a typical creator earns or how quickly they will earn it. The options below are examples rather than an exhaustive list of creator careers.

Choose based on your strengths and the kind of gaming audience you want
Choose recorded YouTube video if you like shaping a finished piece
Long-form videos can suit guides, reviews, challenge runs, lore explanations, and edited playthroughs. Shorts are a different format for compact moments or ideas. You can use both, but do not assume one workflow or audience automatically transfers to the other. Whichever format you choose, YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic. Its July 15, 2025 update clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is classified as “inauthentic content” and is ineligible under its monetization policy. Choose livestreaming if the live session is the product
Live play works when you enjoy the interaction as much as the game: answering chat, moderating a community, and showing up on a schedule. A stream can also generate material for edited videos or clips, but repurposing is only worthwhile if it adds value for each format’s audience and does not overwhelm your capacity. Twitch’s monetization routes depend on Affiliate or Partner status and onboarding; they are not automatic for every streamer.

Choose short-form if you can make compact ideas repeatedly
Short clips can focus on a useful tip, a funny moment, a strong opinion, or a memorable play. The practical test is whether you can produce them without relying on endless highlights or copying trends that do not fit your voice. If brand collaboration is part of your plan, TikTok One is a documented route to advertiser opportunities, not a guarantee of a match.
Choose podcasting or writing if conversation or explanation is your advantage
A podcast can work for game analysis, interviews, news discussion, or ongoing community conversation. A newsletter can cover patch notes, recommendations, essays, or a curated gaming beat. Both reward a clear editorial promise and a cadence you can maintain. Spotify and Substack features have their own location, hosting, and eligibility conditions, so verify availability for your account before building a business plan around them.

Check eligibility before treating monetization as a plan
YouTube Partner Program
YouTube’s eligibility page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists entry routes of 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Channels must also meet policy, location, account-security, and other requirements and pass review; reaching a threshold alone does not ensure acceptance. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “If it meets our policies and guidelines, we’ll accept your channel into YPP.” Check the current YouTube Partner Program eligibility before relying on these figures, since requirements can change.
Spotify subscriptions and Partner Program
Spotify Support’s current monetization-options page, accessed October 3, 2026, says subscriptions require a Spotify for Creators-hosted show, an eligible market, at least 2 published episodes, and at least 100 Spotify listeners within the last 60 days. Spotify’s pages give differing Partner Program thresholds: its feature page lists 1,000 audience members, 2,000 hours consumed in the last 30 days, and 3 episodes, while its support page describes different criteria. Because location and program changes affect access, check the Monetize tab in your own account rather than treating one threshold as universal. See Spotify Support’s monetization options.

Substack sponsorship interest
Substack Support, updated June 16, 2026, says Creator Kits are available to Bestsellers publications or publications with at least 100 paid subscribers. Eligible publishers can express interest in brand sponsorships; eligibility does not promise a sponsor or a match. Check the current Creator Kits guidance.
Twitch monetization
Twitch identifies Bits, subscriptions, and ads as common routes for Affiliates and Partners, with ads available after Affiliate and eventually Partner status. Use a practical decision framework
- Name the work you can repeat. Choose writing, recorded video, clips, live sessions, audio, or a manageable combination. Count the research, editing, moderation, and publishing time—not just the time on camera or in-game.
- Pick the audience relationship you want. Search and video discovery, short-form feeds, real-time community, repeat listening, and direct reader contact are different experiences. Choose the one you want to serve, not only the format that looks popular.
- Choose one primary discovery platform. Focus makes it easier to learn what resonates and establish a cadence. Add another format only when you can adapt material for its audience rather than posting mechanically everywhere.
- Separate audience growth from revenue. Decide whether your longer-term options might include ads, subscriptions, fan support, commerce, or brand deals. Check the relevant eligibility and location rules; do not count a feature as income before you qualify and have an audience.
- Reassess workload and dependence. Track whether you can maintain the schedule and whether a platform’s rules, distribution, or monetization changes would leave you without a way to reach your audience. Diversify only when the added channel is sustainable.
Make a small commitment before expanding
Pick a format and a realistic publishing rhythm you can maintain alongside school, work, or other responsibilities. Make a short run of pieces around a clear gaming promise—for example, beginner guides for one game, weekly esports analysis, or relaxed community streams—and assess the quality of the work, audience response, and effort required. The aim is to learn whether the work fits, not to assume a fixed number of posts will produce growth or income.
