You can schedule a YouTube Live broadcast in YouTube Studio, then use OBS to send the video and control a playlist manually with hotkeys. YouTube schedules the broadcast itself; OBS’s VLC Video source plays a local playlist. The documented workflow does not provide native clock-time scheduling for individual playlist blocks, so hotkeys advance or switch content when an operator presses them.
Before you schedule a broadcast
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires streamers to be at least 16. Eligibility can change, so check the Live Control Room before relying on an event date.
- Install OBS and, if you plan to use its VLC Video source, install VLC as well. Match the application architecture: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Prepare the local video files you intend to play and decide whether the playlist should loop or shuffle. Rehearse with an unlisted or private broadcast before a public event.
Schedule the YouTube Live broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open Manage, then select Schedule Stream. Create a new broadcast or reuse settings from a previous one, then set its details and scheduled time.
- Scheduling creates a future live event and watch page. Viewers may see the event as upcoming and choose to receive a reminder.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room so you can confirm that OBS is sending to the intended broadcast and check YouTube’s preview before going live.
YouTube Help notes, “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream.” Scheduling the event does not schedule changes to the playlist inside OBS.
Connect OBS to the scheduled event
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the scheduled stream’s encoder or stream settings and copy the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if available, then enter the server URL and stream key in their matching fields. If the connection flow offers a direct account connection, use the URL-and-key method when you need to ensure OBS is connected to the particular scheduled event.
- Keep the stream key private. It tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not share it or include it in a public screenshot.
- Apply the settings, return to the scheduled event’s Live Control Room, and confirm that YouTube receives the OBS feed and displays a preview.
Choose the right OBS playback source
| OBS source | Best fit | Playlist behavior | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local audio or video file | Has a loop option for that individual file; it is not the documented multi-item playlist source. | Use a supported media file format. |
| VLC Video | A queue of multiple local media files in a chosen order | Supports playlist loop and shuffle controls. OBS documents loop as on by default and shuffle as off by default for this source. | VLC must be installed; match 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
For a sequence of playlist blocks, add a VLC Video source to the scene that should play them. OBS Project describes it this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.”
Build and control a VLC playlist
- In the OBS scene where the playlist should appear, select Sources → + → VLC Video. If VLC Video is missing, install the matching VLC version and restart OBS.
- Open the source properties and add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Confirm that the files are available to the streaming computer and that the selected scene is the one being sent to YouTube.
- Set playlist Loop and Shuffle according to the block plan. Keep shuffle off when order matters. Loop repeats the playlist; it does not create a timed transition to a different playlist.
- Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS. Assign available hotkeys for the controls you need, such as starting or stopping the stream, showing or hiding sources, switching scenes, and advancing or moving back through the VLC playlist where those source actions are listed.
- Choose combinations unlikely to be pressed accidentally, and test every assignment in an unlisted or private rehearsal. Hotkey assignments are configurable; do not assume a universal default key.
OBS’s VLC source code registers playlist next and previous hotkey actions, but that implementation detail does not guarantee identical defaults or availability in every packaged installation. OBS’s Overview Guide explains, “Here you can set hotkeys that do a variety of things.”

Can OBS switch playlist blocks at set times?
The documented controls establish scheduled YouTube broadcasts and manual OBS playlist or scene controls; they do not establish a built-in OBS feature for changing playlist blocks at predetermined clock times. A hotkey is an operator action, not a schedule. If unattended timed block changes are essential, investigate a current OBS plugin, script, or external automation separately and test it before depending on it for a public event.
Start the stream and verify it
- YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are YouTube’s preparation recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will be ready within a fixed time.
- Start streaming in OBS and check the scheduled event’s Live Control Room preview. Verify that the video and audio are correct, the right event is selected, and the event is accessible as intended.
- Use the tested hotkeys to advance the playlist or change scenes during the broadcast. Monitor the output rather than assuming that a keypress produced the desired result.
- After the event, stop the encoder in OBS and confirm the broadcast has ended in Live Control Room.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is not available in Sources: VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC that matches OBS (for example, 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), then restart OBS.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Recheck the server URL and stream key in Settings → Stream, confirm the scheduled event in Live Control Room, and verify that OBS is actively streaming.
- The wrong broadcast receives the feed: Return to Live Control Room and confirm the selected scheduled event. Check that OBS is using the URL and key associated with that event.
- A hotkey does nothing or triggers the wrong action: Review Settings → Hotkeys, check for a conflicting assignment, and test again in a private or unlisted rehearsal. Do not rely on undocumented default keys.
- The playlist order changes unexpectedly: Check whether shuffle is enabled. Turn it off for a fixed sequence.
- The playlist stops instead of repeating: Check the VLC Video source’s Loop setting. Loop applies to the playlist; Media Source has a separate per-file loop control.
- The scheduled stream is not eligible or available: Check channel verification and any live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and confirm the streamer meets YouTube’s age requirement before planning around the event.
Keep a YouTube stream running without a home computer
StreamNeo is an alternative if you want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud rather than operate OBS on a computer at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It does not stream from a camera.
