You do not need a particular computer, webcam, or microphone in every setup; the right requirements depend on your tracking method and what you plan to stream.
What you need to start
A VTuber stream combines an avatar workflow with a way to broadcast video. Twitch Help describes the basic needs as a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video online, known as a video encoder (Twitch Help, “How Do I Stream FAQ,” accessed October 3, 2026). OBS is one software encoder option, but a machine’s ability to run it depends on the stream settings and scene as well as basic software compatibility.
- A device capable of running your chosen avatar-tracking and broadcast software under your intended workload.
- A stable internet connection and an encoder or other broadcast method.
- An avatar workflow: Live2D, 3D, or PNG, depending on the format and software you choose.
- A tracking input if your avatar workflow uses face tracking. VTube Studio supports webcam and smartphone tracking.
A dedicated high-end computer is not a universal requirement, and Twitch says neither a camera nor a microphone is required to stream. A webcam is needed only if you choose webcam-based tracking; VTube Studio also supports smartphone tracking. If your phone is being used only for tracking, it does not also have to run the model.
Choose your avatar workflow
Live2D, 3D, and PNG avatars are different asset types, and they do not all use the same tracking app or setup. This walkthrough gives detailed import steps for Live2D in VTube Studio. For another avatar type, confirm that your chosen software supports the format and tracking method you intend to use before preparing the scene.

- 3D: Use software that supports the specific 3D avatar format and tracking input you have.
- PNG: Choose a compatible PNG avatar workflow; do not assume it requires the same tracking setup as Live2D.
If you commission or obtain an avatar, check the creator’s license for your intended use, including monetized or commercial streaming. The applicable terms depend on the model.
Import and configure a Live2D model in VTube Studio
Prepare the model files
VTube Studio’s Live2D import guidance calls for a model folder containing a model3.json index file, a .moc3 data file, a physics3.json file, and the model’s texture folder. Put the model folder in the app’s Live2D models folder, then import it in VTube Studio. If the app was already open when you added the model, restart it and check the model list again.

Set up tracking
VTube Studio supports face tracking through a webcam or smartphone. Choose the input supported by your device and workflow, then check that your face is visible to the tracker and that your framing and lighting let it follow your movements. These are practical checks, not a guarantee of a particular tracking result.
On first load, VTube Studio’s Auto-Setup looks for default Live2D parameter names and ranges. If the model uses non-default parameter IDs, some settings may need to be configured manually. If a feature does not respond as expected, check the model’s parameter setup as well as the tracking input.

Build the stream scene and connect the platform
Add the avatar and your content
Use your broadcast software to compose the scene: include the avatar output, then add the game or other content you want viewers to see, along with any background or overlays. Check that the avatar is visible and placed where it will not cover important game information. OBS is an encoder option recognized by Twitch, but exact capture steps depend on the apps and current software versions; consult their current documentation rather than assuming one capture method fits every setup.
Check account access and destination
Before planning a YouTube launch, confirm the channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube Help says channel verification is required and the channel must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The 90-day period is part of YouTube’s stated eligibility rule, not a performance statistic. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as an option for gameplay and overlays.

For Twitch or another platform, check the account’s current live-stream access rules and set the destination in your chosen broadcast method. Account eligibility and platform features can change, so verify them on the platform before scheduling a stream.
Test before going live
- Open the avatar and broadcast apps and confirm the model tracks or animates as intended.
- Preview the complete scene, including the game or other content, avatar placement, background, and overlays.
- Check the audio sources you intend to use and confirm the scene does not hide essential content.
- Connect the encoder to the selected platform and review its stream-health indicators before inviting viewers.
There is no universal hardware threshold for a VTuber stream. Actual demand depends on the game, avatar and tracking software, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s requirements page cautions that meeting basic compatibility requirements does not guarantee a successful stream; its cited requirements page is dated 2021, so use it as a compatibility caveat rather than a current buying guide.

Choose tracking and equipment around your setup
Compare options by asset type, supported tracking input, software compatibility, setup burden, and the avatar’s usage license—not by a single universal “VTuber PC” specification. A webcam and a smartphone are alternative tracking inputs in the VTube Studio ecosystem; a smartphone can be used for tracking without also running the model. Neither a camera nor microphone is mandatory just to broadcast, though your content may call for audio equipment.
When deciding whether a device can handle the stream, consider the combined workload of the game, avatar, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene elements. Basic compatibility alone is not a promise that the whole workload will run successfully.
Common setup problems and what to check
- The Live2D model does not appear: Confirm that its folder is in VTube Studio’s Live2D models folder and contains
model3.json,.moc3,physics3.json, and textures. Restart the app if you imported the folder while it was open. - The avatar imports but does not track properly: Check the selected webcam or smartphone input, face visibility, framing, and lighting. If expressions or movements fail to respond, check whether the model uses non-default parameter IDs that need manual setup.
- The scene is too demanding: Reduce the workload by reviewing the game, encoder, output settings, frame rate, and scene complexity together. Basic OBS compatibility does not establish that a particular combination will work.
- You cannot start a YouTube live stream: Verify channel verification and check for a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s current account guidance if the channel still cannot go live.
- The avatar or content is missing from the broadcast preview: Check the scene composition and the capture or avatar-output setup in the current documentation for the apps you are using.
