How to perform a standard Black Flash on keyboard and mouse
- Unlock Focus Awaken. Buy it in the Focus skill tree. The September 2026 Focus guide says this unlocks Black Flash and grants three focus bars. See the Focus guide.
- Fill a focus bar. Deal damage to players or NPCs; a bar enables an attempt.
- Open the prompt. Press RMB. The September 2026 controls guide lists RMB for Black Flash/Chanting and R for heavy punch. See the controls guide.
- Choose your attack while the prompt is active. Press R for the normal heavy attack, or activate a compatible technique highlighted red. The prompt is timing-sensitive, but the cited guide does not give a universal timing window in seconds. See the Black Flash and Chanting guide.
In practical terms, the standard input is RMB, then R during the prompt. The controls guide also lists Left Shift for Shift Lock, but does not establish Shift Lock as a Black Flash requirement.
Choose between the standard hit and a technique variation

Not every technique is eligible; use the red highlight as the in-game indication that a move supports the variation.
Focus bars, tokens, and optional upgrades
Focus bars enable attempts; tokens are rewards
A focus bar is what lets you attempt a Black Flash. A successful flash awards a Black Flash token, which can be spent on some Maximum Techniques. You do not need a token to initiate a Black Flash.

Focus upgrades are not basic-input requirements
The September 2026 Focus guide describes optional upgrades for damage, more focus bars, healing after successful flashes, a more forgiving focus window, and Sparks of Black variants. It describes variants activated with M2 plus Space, E, or R, each consuming a focus bar. These are progression options beyond the basic Black Flash input, not prerequisites for it. The Focus guide contains the listed mechanics.
Advanced Focus and the Focus Trainer
A community guide updated July 2026 places the Focus Trainer at Jujutsu High, behind the Clan Head on the large building. It describes a quest requiring 10 Demon Fingers and three Black Flashes on Best Friend; completing it unlocks Advanced Focus. The guide says Advanced Focus changes the Black Flash/Chanting system and can be switched back through the trainer, while limiting access to additional skill-tree nodes. These are version-dependent details, so check the trainer’s current in-game dialogue if the location, quest, or options differ. See the Focus Trainer guide.

If Black Flash does not trigger
- Check Focus Awaken. It must be unlocked in the Focus tree before using the mechanic.
- Check your focus bar. Deal damage to fill one before pressing RMB.
- Use the prompt sequence. RMB opens the prompt; R performs the normal heavy attack while it is active.
- For a technique variation, check eligibility. Use a move that is highlighted red during the prompt.
- Do not assume Shift Lock is mandatory. The current controls guide lists Left Shift as the Shift Lock control but does not say it is required for Black Flash.
Controls and platform caveats
The instructions above are for keyboard and mouse. Current touch-screen instructions for mobile were not established by the cited guides, so older advice such as double-tapping should not be treated as confirmed current controls. The cited references are community-maintained rather than developer-authored, and game updates can change controls or progression.
