How Much Does Cloud Transcoding Cost for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop?

A 4K60 YouTube loop has no universal cloud price. A one-input, one-output Google Cloud benchmark is $2.35 per active hour before other workflow costs.

There is no universal price: a useful Google Cloud benchmark for one H.264 UHD input and one H.264 UHD output is $2.35 per active hour, or about $1,692 for 720 hours using the listed us-central1 rates. That is an estimate for encoding resources, not a complete bill or a managed playlist-to-YouTube service. The right budget depends on what you mean by “transcoding”: encoding one feed for YouTube, creating several output renditions, or also delivering video directly to viewers.

First, define what the cloud service is doing

A 4K60 YouTube loop usually means uploading prerecorded video, playing it continuously, and sending one live feed to YouTube. That differs from building a viewer-facing streaming platform that serves video from your own origin or CDN. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so a YouTube-only channel does not automatically need you to generate a full multi-rendition ladder yourself.

  • Single-feed cloud encoding: You pay to process an input and create an output sent to YouTube.
  • Multi-rendition encoding: You create additional outputs for different resolutions, codecs, redundancy, or destinations. Each can add cost.
  • Managed cloud playout: A subscription service may combine playlist playback and broadcasting for a fixed plan price; check whether its actual plan includes 4K60.
  • Local encoding: Your own computer and connection play and send the video. Cloud transcoding may be unnecessary if the source is already encoded and local operation suits you.
  • Direct viewer delivery: If you serve viewers outside YouTube, packaging, transfer, and CDN delivery are separate cost components.

Google Cloud: a one-input, one-output benchmark

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists us-central1 rates of $0.85 per hour for an H.264 UHD input and $1.50 per hour for an H.264 UHD output. The arithmetic is $0.85 + $1.50 = $2.35 per active hour. At 720 active hours, that is $1,692 ($2.35 × 720). These are rate-card calculations, not an independent average or a quote for a complete workflow. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.

For the listed H.265 UHD rates, the input is $0.42 per hour and the output is $3.00 per hour. Together that is $3.42 per hour, or $2,462.40 for 720 hours ($3.42 × 720). The codec changes the input/output cost balance; H.265 is not automatically the cheaper pair.

Google bills channel resources by active time, and an active channel may incur charges even when no input is arriving. The page specifies a 10-minute minimum and rounds up to the nearest minute after that. It lists distribution endpoints at $0.75 per hour, with distribution streams billed as additional outputs. Do not add those charges unless your architecture uses them. The pricing page states no free usage tier.

More outputs change the estimate

Google’s illustrative us-central1 example for two UHD H.264 inputs and seven mixed H.264/HEVC outputs is $8.89 per hour. That configuration-specific example is not equivalent to one input and one output; it shows why an output ladder, extra sources, or redundancy can make a single-output estimate misleading.

AWS MediaLive is a different configuration, not a direct price comparison

AWS says MediaLive charges depend on inputs, outputs, and add-on features, with price varying by codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. Its current pricing page gives an example of $21.791 per hour in US East (N. Virginia) for a standard channel with two UHD inputs and six outputs, including a UHD HEVC output at 30fps. This is not a 4K60 single-input/single-output quote and should not be compared as if it were Google’s setup. AWS also notes that a running channel can incur charges without input or output activity, and data transfer may add charges depending on how content leaves AWS. Qualifying usage can use reserved pricing with a 12-month commitment; AWS publishes savings of up to 75% versus on-demand for applicable resources. Details: AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.

Encoding and public delivery are separate bills

AWS’s live-streaming architecture example for roughly 10,000 viewers over one hour, using a 1080p profile in US East (N. Virginia), estimates about $13.04 for encoding and packaging plus $1,492.56 for 18,017 GB of distribution, for $1,505.60 total. This is an AWS scenario, not a 4K60 or YouTube-only estimate. It illustrates that delivery to a large audience outside YouTube can cost much more than encoding. Do not apply its distribution figure to a feed whose viewers watch on YouTube. Use YouTube’s current ingest settings, not an old sample as a price guide

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 35 Mbps for 2160p60 AV1/H.265 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264. These are recommended ingest bitrates, not cloud-provider prices. Verify the full encoder settings against YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates when configuring a stream.

AWS published a 2021 technical example sending 3840×2160 HEVC at 59.94fps and 20 Mbps to YouTube’s HLS ingest. That documents a possible workflow, not a current general bitrate recommendation or a guarantee for every account or content type. For current ingest configuration, use YouTube’s guidance rather than treating that older example as a universal setting. See AWS’s 2021 4K/HDR-to-YouTube how-to.

Calculate a monthly cloud-encoding estimate

For a first-pass estimate, add the hourly charges for every input, output, and hourly add-on, then multiply by active hours. Add transfer or distribution separately only if your design uses them:

Monthly cloud encode cost ≈ (hourly input charges + hourly output charges + hourly add-ons) × active hours + separate distribution/transfer charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the region and codec. Use the provider’s rate for the actual region and the correct input and output codec tiers.
  2. Count resources separately. Include each input and each output rendition, plus any endpoint or other hourly feature your workflow uses.
  3. Set the active-hour assumption. A continuously active 30-day month is 720 hours. Use fewer hours if the channel is not kept active for the full month.
  4. Separate encoding from delivery. Add packaging, transfer, or CDN costs only where they apply; YouTube’s own viewer delivery is not your separate CDN distribution bill.
  5. Check provider billing rules. Minimum durations, rounding, idle-but-active billing, region, and commitment terms can change the total.

A rate-card calculation is a budgeting starting point, not a prediction of a customer’s final invoice. The Google arithmetic above assumes one input, one output, 720 active hours, and the listed us-central1 rates; it excludes additional resources and other workflow charges.

Compare the workflow, not just the headline price

For an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel, the lowest infrastructure rate may not be the lowest-effort option. Compare a self-managed encoder with a managed loop service and local operation using the costs and responsibilities that actually apply.

Approach What to include in the comparison Important qualification
Self-managed cloud transcoding Provider and region; codec; input and output tiers; frame rate; output count; redundancy; active hours; transfer and add-ons. Cloud encoding rates alone do not necessarily include playlist management or viewer delivery.
Managed cloud playout Price for the plan that includes 4K60; included broadcast hours; destinations; storage and playlist limits; restart/monitoring; cancellation and overage terms. Confirm the 4K60 tier rather than inferring it from a vendor’s starting price.
Local encoding to YouTube Your existing computer, encoder, and internet connection, plus the time and operational responsibility of keeping them running. No hardware recommendation or universal cost is established here; cloud encoding may be unnecessary for already-encoded media.
Viewer-facing streaming stack Packaging, origin, CDN egress, audience size, bitrate, cache behavior, and viewer geography. Only relevant when you serve viewers outside YouTube; do not transfer AWS’s example distribution cost to a YouTube-only stream.

For example, Streamloop advertises 24/7 cloud playlist broadcasting, support up to 4K/60fps, and a $4/month entry price. Its product page does not establish that the entry price includes 4K60, so verify the applicable tier before budgeting. See Streamloop’s product page.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube loop rather than operating a cloud encoding pipeline, StreamNeo is a managed cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection staying on; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India, with card checkout worldwide. StreamNeo streams uploaded video to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 4K60 YouTube loop always need cloud transcoding?

No. If your source is already encoded and local playback is workable, you may send it using a local encoder instead. Cloud transcoding is one workflow choice, not a requirement implied by 4K60.

Does YouTube ingest bitrate determine the cloud provider’s hourly price?

Not by itself. Provider charges depend on the billed input and output resources and configuration; YouTube’s bitrate recommendations describe encoder output settings.
