How Shorts can lead viewers to a 24/7 stream
A Short can link to another video, Short, or live stream on your channel through the Related video feature. The linked destination appears beneath your handle in the Shorts player. A URL typed into a Short’s description or comments is not clickable, so make the built-in link your primary route to the stream. YouTube explains how to add a related video, and its link-sharing guidance explains which Shorts links viewers can click.
This works for a horizontal, encoder-run 24/7 stream as a link to its watch page. It does not mean that the horizontal stream itself will appear as a live tile in the Shorts feed: YouTube says scheduled streams, Premieres, and horizontal live streams do not appear there. Vertical live streams in the YouTube mobile app are a separate discovery experience.
Make a Short worth watching on its own
Choose a moment or idea, not a full-stream cutdown
Look for a recurring segment, a strong moment, or an answer to a question viewers actually ask. For a gaming channel, that might be a quick explanation of a strategy, a surprising in-game moment, or a useful tip from the ongoing broadcast. Select only enough footage to deliver that idea. The Short should make sense even if the viewer never opens the stream.

Edit for a clear payoff and an honest invitation
Give the Short a clear opening, then deliver the moment or answer without requiring context from hours of earlier footage. Add a simple invitation that accurately describes the live channel—for example, that the channel is running a continuous gameplay stream. Avoid promising that a particular Short will bring viewers into the live chat or guarantee a specific experience.
YouTube describes Shorts discovery as personalized: viewer interest and response, including whether people watch or ignore a Short, viewing duration, likes, and other signals, can matter alongside topic interest, competition, and seasonality. It publishes no universal posting formula. YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence required for videos to perform well, and that Shorts performance does not negatively affect long-form video recommendations. Attach the live stream in YouTube Studio
- Check access and destination. Related video requires advanced feature access. Choose a public or unlisted video or live stream from your channel; the destination must comply with Community Guidelines. Confirm the stream is available at the watch page you intend to share.
- Upload the Short. Publish the standalone clip to the same channel as the stream.
- Open the Short in YouTube Studio. Find the Short in your channel’s content and open its details.
- Set the Related video. Choose Related video, select the relevant live stream, and save. The clickable destination appears beneath your handle in the Shorts player.
- Check the viewer path. Open the published Short and confirm the related-video link points to the intended stream. In the Short itself, direct viewers to that built-in link—not to a URL in the description or comments.
Choose the right live destination and format
For a continuous horizontal stream
Use the live watch page as the Related video destination when it is available for selection. A horizontal 24/7 encoder stream can still be reached this way, even though horizontal live streams are not shown in the Shorts vertical-live feed. Keep the Short’s invitation specific to what the stream actually offers.
For a vertical mobile livestream
YouTube’s vertical-live experience can put live streams in the mobile app’s vertical-live feed. Eligible mobile streamers may also be able to save a Short highlight from a livestream, but this is not a general clip-extraction tool for every 24/7 encoder stream. YouTube’s stated conditions include a vertical stream made with the YouTube mobile app, a duration from 10 minutes to 12 hours, chat enabled, an audience designation other than made for kids, and compliance with safety standards. Set a saved highlight to public if the goal is Shorts-feed reach. YouTube’s live-promotion guidance covers stream highlights and archives.

Use the vertical mobile route when its orientation and production workflow fit the channel. Use a horizontal continuous stream when that is the format you need, and treat the Short’s Related video as the direct click path rather than expecting placement in the vertical-live feed. YouTube’s live setup guidance covers computer, software, webcam, and mobile approaches; expensive equipment is not required to begin. A hardware encoder is optional infrastructure, not a shortcut to Shorts reach. YouTube live streaming tips for computer.
Measure whether the path is useful
Run a modest, consistent experiment: publish a small set of distinct Shorts that genuinely represent the stream, attach the same destination where it remains relevant, and review results over a consistent period. In Analytics, look at Engaged views and audience response for each Short, then inspect live traffic sources for changes. YouTube does not publish a universal Short-to-livestream conversion rate, so do not treat a view or a link impression as proof that the Short caused a live viewer.

Keep the March 31, 2025 change in mind when comparing periods. YouTube says the headline Shorts view count now includes starts and replays without a minimum watch time; Engaged views remain in Analytics to indicate viewers who chose to keep watching. Older and newer raw view totals therefore are not directly equivalent. YouTube also provides traffic-source reporting for vertical Live. YouTube recommends sharing an event stream link at least 48 hours beforehand, using a teaser or trailer, and promoting through connected social accounts. That advice is for an event; for a continuous channel, apply it selectively when launching or relaunching a stream rather than treating it as a required schedule. For scheduled streams starting within the next 24 hours, viewers can opt into notifications from Shorts. YouTube’s live-promotion help and live settings help describe these options.

Keep the stream itself eligible and useful
The Short and the live destination both need to follow YouTube’s policies. The Related video destination must comply with Community Guidelines; also make sure the gameplay, music, overlays, and other material in the stream are authorized for your use. A Short that attracts attention but points to a stream that is unavailable, restricted, or materially different from its promise will frustrate viewers. YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance covers archives and highlights; public archives can help future discovery, and YouTube recommends organizing archives and highlight clips into playlists.
